Aight, I slept on getting weekend passes because I wasn't sure I'd be able to go, but now it looks like I'm in for Sat and Sun! What's my best option to lock down tickets? Stubhub? Better to get them now or closer to the date? Should be an awesome weekend...one of my old bands is playing a reunion gig in Boston on the Friday, then I'll head down to Newport for the weekend....wheee!
I'd wait til closer to the fest and keeping checking sites like this one (where at least one Newport year I bought tickets for face with a couple of weeks to go). Just what I would do. Also, for those of you who have seen Sturgill, rave reviews or what? I just picked up a ticket to see him at the Stone Pony and just started listening to him.

It was a great show but he seemed nervous and it seemed like he was hurrying through the songs a bit. I don't think he is used to larger crowds yet. I would still very much recommend you go if you can.
To add to this, LD, I was talking to my co-worker who moonlights as security at that venue. He said that Sturgill went directly from the stage to the bus after the show and didn't come out which he said is unusual for acts that play at that venue.
I also agree with Siggy that he seemed like he was rushing a lot of songs. It felt like he upped the tempo on even the slow songs. When we were driving home, Siggy commented on how he didn't play that long, and I responded that he had played around 75-90 minutes. It just didn't seem like that because of the pace he was going through songs at. This was unfortunate because the best parts of the show, in my opinion, were the few breaks were he just played with his band rather than sticking strictly to how the songs were on the records.
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.

I am very much hoping for Sufjan Stevens. Excited for his new album, getting back to the roots, and I think the Fort will bring out something special in the guy. Anybody else?
2024 Lineup: 4/10 - HFTRR @ Larimer Lounge 6/1 - JRAD @ Red Rocks 7/18 - Dr. Dog @ Red Rocks 7/26-7/28 - Newport Folk Festival 9/19-9/22 - Bourbon & Beyond Festival
Would love if we got Roseanne Cash at the Fort. She just won three Grammys
Ditto. As someone who unfairly wrote her off due to a kneejerk reaction to the famous last name, I think the new album is spectacular. And it got so much attention I can't imagine NFF didn't try pretty hard to bring her this year. Hope they succeeded.
John Fogerty is announcing a summer tour soon. I still hope we get him as a headliner. I think so many of Newport's new-age artists (Dawes, Alabama Shakes, Deer Tick, Houndmouth, Shovels & Rope) have a good deal of CCR influence and he could probably do some great collaborations. I've personally really wanted to hear him do something with Brittany Howard. I was bummed she wasn't on the collab album he put out a couple years ago, but Dawes and MMJ were and I'd love to see them join him on stage. I think I'd prefer Fogerty to Robert Plant, although either would be great.
So Hozier and Dawes just announced a joint show in Pittsburgh the Tuesday after Newport. I think this makes them both strong candidates to return to Newport.

Unfortunately I think he was announced for a festival already with promise that it would be his only festival performance of the year.
The Decemberists, My Morning Jacket, and either some old act (Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan, John Fogerty, etc.) or New Basement Tapes as the headliners. Alabama Shakes, Hozier, and Of Monsters and Men as the lead ins.
Although that's a lot of repeat from 2012 (especially with Tallest Man on Earth, First Aid Kit, and Dawes looking likely). But I guess it's been long enough.

I'll tell you that one of MMJ's moms said she thought MMJ would be back at Newport this year - information volunteered, but it was so so 'i think' that i'd not put any real weight on that. The friends you make in Spa Jacuzzi's....

Mwahahaha seriously. abbo- itrainmonkeys and ilovethisgame were my partners in crime for this. We all stayed there and waited... and waited... and waited for something to happen...

If we searched this and passed NFF threads, how many times do you think that you and bacon have expressed a desire to see these two at the fort?
I mean....it's got to happen. Ever since they announced Jim James, Taylor Goldsmith, and John McCauley as some of the guys on the "Festival Board of Advisors" I've felt like it's coming at some point. It's the perfect place to do a one-off show with artists who know and love the festival. Sure, it's tough to get together to record a whole album but a special show at NFF would be do-able.

I don't think that it helps that those artists are in so many projects that they're always touring with a band at that time (which would make even a one-off difficult).

Might not be easy but it's certainly not impossible. I've always imagined they'd have some of those acts on the lineup, anyway, if we got one of those "supergroups". Deer Tick and Dawes tend to be around the past few years even if they aren't playing the festival. If NFF booked Delta Spirit they could easily do a Middle Brother set. McCauley can get booked with Diamond Rugs while Taylor is there with Dawes and they can make a Middle Brother set out of it.
Monsters of Folk and New Basement Tapes would be harder but I think Jim James and Conor enjoyed the festival enough to make it happen if they wanted.
My main point is that this isn't just some random fest wanting to put these guys together. It's NFF - some of them have a direct influence/hand in when it comes to the artists on the lineup.

I feel like we probably wouldn't get MMJ and New Basement Tapes, although I'd love if we did. I also feel like though Boston Calling and Newport have some crossover, they wouldn't share a headliner. Maybe that's just me wanting NBT over MMJ because I'll be seeing the latter at BC and Roo.

Well Conor is playing Forecastle the week before and bringing back an older project. You never know what might happen.

I am going to not look into this at all, and hope for the best. Haha. Thanks for the heads up though. I'll try not to be too crushed when he doesn't show.

Haha! I would have waited too. bonzai has shown me the way to Newport. And I'm happy to have a boyfriend who has made folk a more relatable genre for me. Anything can happen. I would have sat there and watched Ryan Adams smoke a blunt in silence.
It took me a day to really get into the festival, but man, you really feel like your getting the best experience from every artist. Benjamin Booker's set was so out of place and he made you listen. Crushed it.

This would be basically my dream lineup so I'm sure hoping you're right. Is Leonard Cohen still planning to tour more though? I thought he'd finally wound it down (for now at least).
Seems like after a brief flurry of announcements they've slowed down. Hoping we get one or two more this week! I realize I'm just being impatient...

Ya and it's pretty safe to say desaparecidos aren't playing Newport (thank god)
So Hozier is playing WayHome in Ontario the same weekend. Dawes isn't on that lineup but given their tour together I'd guess they get added. Not sure if that minimizes their Newport chance or not
