Hey folks, first timer here for NFF. I was hoping somebody could shed come light on the night shows. What can we expect? What venues do shows take place at? Are there shows each night? I understand Wilco played a night show a couple of years back. Is it common to have a band of their caliber play a night show or was that a one off? An insight would helpful. Thanks!

Wilco played Friday night in 2012. I don't think they did an after show though?? Deer Tick + guests usually does after shows at the Blues Cafe and there are shows at the Jane Pickens Theater. The latter has been curated by artists like MCK, Sara Watkins, Dawes...
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.

Wilco played a Friday Headliner set if i'm not mistaken. They weren't a regular "night show" like the after parties that Deer Tick (and more recently other bands) host in town.
The Deer Tick hosted shows are Friday, Saturday, and Sunday night hours after the festival ends but they are super hard to get into as space and tickets are limited and usually sell out right away. This is at the Newport Blues Cafe
There are now two other venues (I believe) that host late night shows. One is the Jane Pickens Theater and was hosted by the Milk Carton Kids last year. I forget about the other one. The Pickens theater was seated and seemed to hold a bit more than the blues cafe but I couldn't be sure. It wasn't tightly packed.
Some other acts who show up for late night shows are The Felice Brothers, Langhorne Slim, Joe Pug, Dawes, and more.

I've been to the Pickens and the Blues Cafe shows, they are both great. Do not go to the Deer Tick blues Cafe shows if you don't like a tight rowdy crowd.
Another cool thing about the after shows is seeing multiple artists just hanging out watching the show with you. I was at the heartbreakers show last year and saw Jim James just hanging out waiting for the show to start. So cool!

Went to see the Milk Carton Kids Revue last year on Friday night. The theatre holds... 200-250ish people. Very cool, intimate show. Ended around 1230am!
Robert Ellis is quite yummy looking. I should've expected that considering my collective crush on the entire OCMS crew. Katy Mae and ilovethisgame can attest to that

Yeah, the Wilco show was the Friday in 2012, the year before NFF became a three day festival. It was more of a "pre-show", with Blitzen Trapper and Megafaun. And yeah, it's common to have larger artists like that popping up around, but more so in a guest spot. Jackson Browne (who was a headliner in 2012) joined Deer Tick for one of their after shows that year, and I (very drunkenly) met Hozier at a Deer Tick after show last year.
Also, y'all didn't hear this from me, but I've got a very good source who told me something may be a wee bit different about the Deer Tick after shows this year. But I'm forbidden to tell yous guys more. If it is true I'll be like "YEAH! I KNEW THAT! HA!" Sorry for the tease...

I'm a super straight guy, but this picture always gets me. That smile...
Today has been a good day! Purchased tickets to George Ezra at House Of Blues Boston, and OMAM at Lupos!
I was suppose to be seeing George Ezra tonight in Toronto, but it got pushed back to next month. He was superb when I saw him opening for Hozier three weeks ago! He'd be so great for Newport!
I saw Robert Ellis with The Lone Bellow this winter. Plenty of eye candy there! Along with some great singing naturally! So Lucius is touring with MMJ for part of the tour and Lucius has also sung with San Fermin on a few of their songs. What are the chances that all three will be there?

I want me some more Lucius! They were great last year and al happy to be there!
I just want to clarify a point. There are NO night shows at Newport Folk Festival. When you leave it is just getting dark and it is about 9:15 at the latest. As many have pointed out there are two aftershow venues in "downtown" Newport that are separate from NFF but feature the artists that have been playing at the fest. Wilco never played an aftershow in Newport. But they were the first band to play a Friday evening show at NFF because before that NFF was only Saturday and Sunday. That year there were only 3 shows on Friday all at the Fort (main) Stage. Since that year the Friday schedule has increased to be almost a full day with all stages being used but it still ends before sunset.
Deer Tick kicked off the tradition of aftershows at the Newport Blues Cafe and has hosted them there for several years now and yeah they are sweaty, intimate and great (if you are into that thing). I went with my daughter and saw the Middle Brother reunion along with Sharon Van Etten and I could have put a foot on the stage if I wanted to. If you are skeeved by close body contact and annoyed at fighting for 20 minutes to get the bartender's attention don't go.
Jane Pickens is an actual movie theater that plays artsy type films so it's also a smaller venue. I haven't been to an aftershow there but it is obviously a more subdued show. Kind of perfect for a band like Milk Carton Kids. I would love to see an aftershow there and will if one of my favorite artists ends up there.
the problem with the jane pickens show, at least so far, is that they haven't announced the "and friends" special guests ahead of time. So it's a bit of luck who shows up... now, with a little analysis, you can make some educated guesses, but it's a little frustrating. For example, Dawes played 2 nights year-before-last and Saturday's guests were way better than Friday's, for my tastes.
