I went Friday-Sunday. I took my family this year and we stayed with local friends. This allowed me to spend some time with the family each day before going out (beach, kids playing together, etc.) and spend the night with them each night. I missed more bands than ever, but I also had a blast the whole weekend, saw most of what I wanted to see, and didn't miss a ton of family time. (I have no problem being away from the family for awhile, but I usually do several festivals and shows a year, so if I can combine both it's healthier and better for all of us.) And this was my least favorite lineup they've had, so it wasn't as big of a deal. Any way, I saw 15 bands. Ranked by my enjoyment level:
Haim Foals Grimes Phases Givers Big Grams/Alessia Cara/Leon Bridges/Run the Jewels/Lenny Kravitz all pretty much tied The Weeknd (Not a big fan, but those beats are nice) Miike Snow Walk the Moon The Neighbourhood (I liked a lot of their songs on record, but their live show was disappointing.) Pell (The only really bad show I saw.)
Hated to miss a few of the acts that I missed but it helped lend itself to an easy going weekend, and I'll catch a few of them at Bonnaroo anyway. If the lineup is like this again I'll either skip Hangout or do what I did this year and combine it with a family/friends trip. That was a pretty good formula. And without better headliners I'm probably out.
We decided to leave after Courtney Barnett (I only saw a few songs so I didn't count her on the ones I saw). Just didn't have it in me, and we saw her last summer.
After attending my first hangout here are some ideas that might improve the festival. An ice bath tent. I was definitely not prepared for the heat. Also a place were you can put ice in your water bottle. Most of the water filling stations weren't cold but I couldn't complain. Water was water at that point. The country music festival in Nashville does this thing were they have space between the stage and crowd and they allow people to walk down and take pictures up close to the artists. That would be really cool for the two main stages. Saw a lot of artists I wouldn't normally see and really enjoyed the festival and will probably be back next year. Being on the beach gives it a huge edge over other festivals I would consider to go to.
Prediction for next year's lineup: J. Cole/kendrick - kings of leon - sia/lorde
Still can't get over the Foals show. I think seeing them in a small venue like Boom Boom was a once in a lifetime experience. I would have paid the entire ticket price for that one concert.

Leaving Foals for the main stage VIP area might be my biggest mistake of the weekend. Had a spot behind the sound stage but really loved the ice cold bud lights all day.
I'm glad Foals lived up to the hype. I am seeing them at a venue that is basically the equivalent of someone's backyard in July. You're all getting me pretty excited.

Within driving distance of Buffalo?
It's about 2 hours from Downtown. Kegs Canalside in Jordan, NY nears Weedsport towards Syracuse. Never been but the outdoor pictures look tiny and my brother has been there and confirms. $20 with Holy White Hounds and a couple local openers.

I was driving home from work mentally arranging my top acts of Hangout 2016 and struggled between Foals and Florence for the #1 spot. I was on the rail for Florence and I'm absolutely infatuated with the woman, but Foals shook my foundation.
Acts I saw and loved at Hangout 2016 and would pay to see tomorrow all over AGAIN-
Foals Florence and the Machine Alabama Shakes Miike Snow Moon Taxi as People of the Sun X Ambassadors - There was a moment when I witnessed the lead singer, Sam Harris kneeling on the stage watching his blind brother Casey Harris destroy a solo on the keyboards that touched me to the deepest part of my core. Nearly brought me to tears. Courtney Barnett-I only got to see two songs before we claimed a spot on the rail for Florence

Miike Snow was def better live than in youtube videos.
X Ambassadors were pretty great. Agree about the blind brother solo. Pretty amazing shit right there.
Flo is my #1. She was mesmerizing and I couldnt stop watching her. The twirling and using every inch of that stage. Her soft spoken voice and very humble thank yous. Sold forever.
Thursdays preparty was pretty rockin and wish they could of matched that all weekend. Grouploves singer/guitarist was channeling Shannon Hoon from woodstock 94 and wearing a dress onstage. Sidenote, if anyone has never watched Blind Melon from woodstock 94. Magic right there.
More random thoughts to follow as we're still traveling north. Only 7 more hours!!!
Glad there a few Miike Snow apologists. I had a lot of fun a few months ago but missed them Saturday. At some point Ill do a full review, for now:
Favorites: Thurs - Big Freedia/Rage Taxi Friday - Vince Staples/Revivalists Saturday - Foals easily Sunday - Florence easily, Lenny brought it though
Anyone else see Health? The bassist n guitarist barely touch their instruments. I left after 3 songs but aside from the weird sound, wasn't much to them.

I was in the grove for some of Health. They tossed out the poop (chocolate custard) emoji inflatables. There was a lot of them too.
Another year, another awesome time. Met Craig (cmack) and Dan (ne), great dudes which I expected. Met Dylan (DueDylangence) before the preparty quickly but I was borderline blackout when I did so sorry if I couldn't speak in a complete sentence. Rain sucked on Friday but it had some positives and negatives. Negative side being that the lines to get in were crazy long. Never seen that at this fest before, we've always been in and out. Caused us to miss Silversun Pickups which sucked but what can you do. Positive side was being able to see more acts at night like The Revivalists. Weather was perfect otherwise the entire weekend. The demo was def younger which was to be expected and they def sold over capacity this year as well. Luckily there was only one set where that was an issue for me and that was Cage The Elephant. Couldn't get even remotely close. It may have been a blessing though because we only stayed for about 30 mins of their set and then left to get a sick spot for Foals. Like most have said on here, it was a younger scene but I had absolutely zero issues with the crowd all weekend. Is it a little annoying to see these college kids wanting to force themselves as close as possible when they don't really care about the music? Ya I guess. But our group is at the point where being packed in tight in a crowd kind of sucks as it is so we don't care THAT much. We got close for the sets we wanted to- Flo, Foals, and RTJ. That's all I needed.
Best Sets:
1.) Foals- Give props to Hangout on this one. If they were on the Main Stage at like 4:00 it would have not been the same. Do we like that Calvin is a headliner? Nope. But u better believe he moves tickets and his crowd would have been packed. The benefit is you can throw everyone else a bone and put Foals in the tent and have them absolutely tear the f*ckin house down. Another benefit is when Calvin cancels it literally doesn't effect anything. Works for me. The lights and the crowd made this show perfect.
2.) Florence + The Machine- She was everything I wanted her to be and more. Not much needs to be said, she's a very special performer and will be a #1 at festivals next album tour. And she deserves it. Only reason I have her at #2 is the rock-ier atmosphere at Foals' show. As much as I love Flo's music, that's a little more in my wheelhouse.
3.) Run The Jewels- Killer Mike is hilarious. Best hip-hop artist(s) in the game right now and their live show brings it every damn time. I don't think they streamed this show but if they did I would have been all over the screen, close af. Zero regret missing Health.
4.) The Revivalists- Haven't seen them in a long time and completely forgot just how much these dudes rock live. Just came off seeing Jason Isbell who was fine but the music is so slow for the most part that there wasn't a whole lot of crowd energy. Advantage to seeing him was the short trek over to BMI. Their crowd was big and if you weren't centered at that stage, there were definitely some sound issues but it was easy to get to a decent spot. Half our group stayed on the outside but I got closer and jammed out. Being at night helped as well.
5.) Miike Snow- Yeah, never let a stream dictate the live impression of a band. Miike Snow's music isn't groundbreaking or thought-provoking but they put on a damn fun show and they sounded great. For how slow their music sounds on their albums, they have more umph to them live. Was pleasantly surprised. Paddling Out is the jam.
Hon. Mention) Lenny Kravitz- Dude rocked and jammed HARD. Did not expect the full brass backing he had. Definitely added to the performance. Shaking his hand after the set when he was walking through the crowd was a nice touch too. Anytime an artist plays over their set time like that I give them some props. I'll probably never listen to his music on it's own again but if he ever made it onto another lineup I was attending, I'd see him for sure.
Overall, this was another great Hangout Fest. I feel like they did a great job with the schedule for my tastes and it def masked the subpar lineup. My group's been coming to the fest for 5 years now and they said Foals and Florence are 2 performances that are def in the top 5 all time we've seen here. Up there with MMJ, Outkast, etc. Hard to complain if you're still leaving the fest saying to yourself, "God, that was incredible." As for 2017, not a guarantee but we're going to try to make it work. Ocean Reef will be the spot again though if it does happen.

I know this wasn't your intention, or maybe it was, but for a best show you would think you would have a better description than, "lights, crowd, and because it wasn't Calvin Harris"

Idk man, that's still an absolute shite description is all.
I'll make sure to consult you first next time. Setlist was damn near perfect, every song had high energy, and they basically didn't stop rocking out for the entire set time. The guitar riffs sounded crystal clear, his voice was spot on (esp on the screams), and the rest of what I listed contributed to a perfect atmosphere.
