-Agree w Zaj. Their sound engineer must be a genius because every instrument is crystal clear along with the vocals whether Yanis is singing or screaming. Light show is comparable to any headliner. They could have filled the beach spot easily but Calvin/Panic! def has more fans (for now).
finally home and sat down at the computer and can get my thoughts out! Ill start with the few minor negatives. The lines to get in even at noon were insane, it took me nearly an hour to get in on Sat and forced me to miss Coasts, however i got my flask in with ease every day and wasnt hassled or patted down this year. That said i did notice some inconsistencies for example the girl in front of me on Sunday had her spray lotion taken away despite being allowed to have it the other days, the security woman allowed her to use it before trashing it but a security officer came over and i shit you not wouldnt let her do it bcuz "SHE COULD GET HIGH". I filled my camelback and the same woman told me it wasnt her job to dump it out so i walked in with it full. No food vendors made it clear if they were cash only and i waited in 2 long lines to find out cash only after i had used my card at another tent. The crowds were big and i couldnt get anywhere as close as i thought i would most of the time but still made out fine and got some rails/good spots but got the vibe at some shows that people were just there to be there which i guess isnt a shock.
ok ok on onto the good shit! Like i said before it was great to meet solidrock and his wife, krisp and his crew, zaj and his, and chics house and i stopped in Nola monday and met Esteban and we was nice enough to let me crash for the night but another option became available with some friends.I honestly can say i did not see one bad set all weekeend, every artist brought it 200% that i saw making this top 5 very hard, but here it is.....
1. Florence: No surprise here, we managed to be on the left side of the stage near the logo about 5 people back and i was absolutely blown away and lost it when she covered 'You Got The Love'. The set was was perfect from the setlist, to production, to her presence, the sound and the crowd we were surrounded by was awesome to sing along with.
2. Portugal The Man: Only negative was that annoying wannabe Sway who introduced them and hung on the stage, he sucked. But this was my first time seeing them and i thought they had the best sound of the weekend and they played every song i knew and that 'Hey Jude' moment towards the end was really cool. Also ran into some friends from Philly so that added to it for me.
3. Kravitz: Cant say i expected to be saying this but man oh man did we have fun from start to finish, it felt like a headlining set it was that good. He really is a true vet performer and knows how to let the rest of the band shine with him. A lot of people near seemed like they were just there for Flo but after a few songs everyone was rocking out together, i loved it.
4. Moon Taxi: First the Rage set was amazing and we got into a sweet, friendly but rough enough mosh it ruled. Their own set just felt right on the main stage and they get better every time I see them, got to hear all my faves too plus a good spot.
5. Zoogma: Im so glad they didnt end up conflicting with PTM like they were supposed to. Small crowd but everyone was getting down and it felt so much cooler with the BMI on the beach and the ocean in the background. They covered 'Lights Out' by Big Grams and 'What You Know' by T.I which was so damn unique.
Honorable mentions: Revivalists not in top 5 only bcuz it was near impossible to top the last time i saw them but they still rules and the BMI under the lights really enhanced it.
RTJ: They did their thing and went hard but if youre gonna play Bananna Clipper you have to bring Big Boi out for it, we got all excited for him but felt like a let down. Regardless they are on another level for hip hop shows right now.
Vince Staples/Pell are a tie. They both brought it, we knew Vince would and tore down that slut life stage. I wasnt sure what to expect from Pell but im a fan and he drew a nice crowd and was cool too see how appreciative he was to the crowd.
almost done i swear....
best set i wish i stayed at: Powers. Man they had the smallest crowd i saw but we got 3 songs in and they were rocking but really wanted to see Grimes so made the move.
Drunken regret: Foals. I mentioned the other day i blacked out during it and all i recall is being there and a knowing they played a few songs but all i really now is that i was there. Never double fist 2 lime a ritas lol.
Wow - I don't even understand why a person would do that...
I did see a young guy on his knees projectile vomiting in the middle of the beach during PtM. His gf was furious. It lasted at least 15 minutes and then they covered it with sand.
That is disgusting.
We saw security haul off a kid who was so drunk, he literally fell flat on his face. We heard he was arrested for public intoxication.
That happened right in front of me and my friends. He went into a full sprint into the crowd in VIP and almost knocked me as well as a bunch of other people over. At first I thought he was REALLY excited to see PtM, but then I saw security dragging him up the barricade between VIP and GA. He literally fell flat on his face twice, once in the barricaded area and again when they brought out so the paramedics to check him out. That guy was definitely on something other than alcohol. He really lost it when the cops came over to take him away.
Idk man, that's still an absolute shite description is all.
I'll make sure to consult you first next time. Setlist was damn near perfect, every song had high energy, and they basically didn't stop rocking out for the entire set time. The guitar riffs sounded crystal clear, his voice was spot on (esp on the screams), and the rest of what I listed contributed to a perfect atmosphere.
1 - No matter how low my expectations are, and they were low this year because of the lineup, I will ALWAYS have the time of my life at this festival. There is something very special about the beach + live music + great friends.
2 - Big props to the Weeknd, biggest surprise of the festival for me.
3 - I also really enjoyed Coleman Hell despite reading mixed reviews.
4 - Thought Foals, RTJ, PtM and Big Grams all killed it.
5 - Bummed I missed Isbell, Haim, Grimes and Miike Snow. I heard they had great sets.
6 - Love Kurt Vile and Courtney Barnett but I needed way more energy at those points in the day. In Kurt Vile's defense his set was hot as f'ing shiznit.
7 - Ellie Goulding bored the hell out of me. So mad I left Courtney Barnett early to check her out.
8 - Probably the most crowded I've ever seen the festival. Been every year since 2011.
9 - Flo was amazing. Everything I expected and a great end to the festival.
Friday was very rainy, and way too drunk to be out in public. Not me, the whole damn fest was way too drunk. Although I did take the wrong shuttle and end up walking endless miles back home. (maybe it was just me??)
CH - meh, sad story to hear, hope everyone's alright. Very glad Foals was there to save the day.
I would kevin federline the shit out of Florence. Marry me for one day, two days, zero facks given.
Top 5 (ish) to follow later.
PS, how did it not hit 400 pages?
I'm like Matt, never actually met up with anyone. Hangout gets a little crazy, but I'm hoping to see y'all at SlossFest though!
Who was the first act to start the inflatables? I dont remember them in 2011. Earliest was the donuts for diarrhea planet.
Not 100% cuz I wasn't there, but I thought 21 pilots had some in 2013? Also was there a Matt and Kim set on the beach with inflatables? Can't even remember what year that was.

Florence and Foals ruled the weekend for me. Those shows are now in my top ten of all time.
Miike Snow was also great. We weasled our way up to the rail since a bunch of kids left after like two songs. Excellent dance party.
Caught most of The Struts. Enjoyed them as well. SSPU rocked it, and I even enjoyed Kravitz. His band was great and loved that he kept playing till they turned his sound off.
We had quite a few youngsters in the crew this year so bear with me for the following bands: Surprise of the weekend: Walk the Moon wasn't half bad. Not a fan but I had a good time at their set. I also enjoyed The Weeknd despite his pyro being off by a few seconds. Ha.
Can't say the same for Xambassdors. Hated them before but met up with the crew there and bailed before the last song. So so bad. Caught the first part of Flume and got so bored we went to Kravitz. I really like Flume but maybe had too high of expectations.we checked out Speaker of the House in the Malibu tent mostly for a shade break but also was not feeling it. He didn't even bother to mix songs into each other. Literally stop one song. Silence. Next song starts. Extra lame.
Tried to see Hippie Sabotage at the restaurant stage but they never showed? The Saturday schedule shift really messed up my plans and meant I missed Griswolds too. Bummer.
I also wish I had seen Leon Bridges. A couple in our crew said it was awesome. I had to secure my sweet spot for Foals though.
The worst thing I did? Went to Fetty Wap. Holy crap was that terrible. I mean I expected it to be bad but I think they only preformed for like 13 minutes and had a hype man out there just playing that Panda song the rwst of the time. Probably the most crowded set I went to. LOTS of ladies wearing Trap Queen tshirts there.
It seemed like everyone I wanted to see was at the same time and then I had huge blocks of time where I didn't know who to see.
Also what was up with not being allowed to bring "outside food" into the restaurant stage area. Has it always been that way? Same with two drink max per person...
Thanks for posting the Foals videos and I'm loving all the recaps. But I'm still suffering from my annual post-hangout depression and this is just dragging it out! Take me back! I've been telling everyone that Florence is from another planet. That energy is like no other and I can't get it off my mind.

That's what I always say about Flo. She's not from this planet.
I hesitated to post on here my Hangout experience. This was my first year - and maybe I went in with too high expectations...or maybe I'm just old...but I doubt I will be back. I was very disappointed. They sold too many VIP tickets in my opinion - it was so crowded we could barely find a place to sit anywhere near the pools or in the shade. It was WAY too crowded and chaotic for me. Also, the crowd was SO YOUNG. I mean, I know there would be some teenagers there...but the amount of kids I saw passing out from too much alcohol and bad drugs that looked like they were 14 and 15 years old was disturbing. I found it hard to walk through the crowd - everywhere I went kids were pushing.
I wanted to kill myself at Fetty Wap but held on bc Flo...the teen girls elbowing and pushing me didn't help. I definitely wasn't feeling the good vibes that I expected and I was shocked how rude the crowd was.
I'm glad some of y'all had a great time, and it's been fun chatting with you. Like I said, maybe I'm just too old for this now.

I agree with the GA crowd. Kids everywhere but I thought the VIP was managed. We were up front for Fetty and walked up with ease after grabbing some drinks. The VIP grove always have a spot to sit down with the exception of Friday evening when 'dinner' was being served. The pools were always packed but I think they are every year.
having ocean access is clutch. i was roasted during zoogma and had an hour plus to kill before PTM and went over to the bud light house and waited maybe 5 min to get to the ocean, cant even explain how refreshing it was.

I got back to Montgomery yesterday evening. I was too exhausted to write a proper review then. Now that I've slept and almost unpacked, I feel like I can give a proper review.
Thursday was, in my opinion, the best preparty we've had in quite some time. We tried to eat dinner in the Hangout restaurant, but some obnoxious DJ was playing on the stage. So, we bailed and had burgers in the carnival/beer garden area. Then: MT Rage - I've been waiting on that set for years! Was not disappointed! I made a comment about how most of the crowd wasn't even born when these songs came out ("As we move into '92"). After dancing/sweating so hard at the Rage set... Seratones - I really love the lead singer's voice. Grouplove - They are so in love! It is the cutest thing! He apologized for not being around lately because they've been working on an album and having a baby. Squee!! <3 There was one dude talking to his girlfriend in a loud, condescending tone about picking a major at college. Dude, a music festival is not the time or place to discuss this. We got away from them quickly. We skipped Matt & Kim, because Matt & Kim.
Friday.... oh man! I totally understood the rain delay and I think Hangout did the best they could considering the circumstances, but their PR was too busy tagging their bae to provide anyone any useful information. Whoever worked on the app deserves a steak dinner, though. We had the new schedule on the app by the time we were in the gate. The gate took about 15 minutes to get through for VIP. I heard that some of y'all were in line for GA for 1.5 hours! Crazy! After a stop in the Grove... Pepper - They were so stoked to finally be playing and that made us happy to finally be there! I really enjoyed their energy! SSPU - I forgot how long their songs were. Because of the shortened set times, I felt like we got maybe 8 songs. But they were good. Big Grams - Big Boi and Sarah brought it! I wish they would have done more mashups of their songs, but, again, the shortened set times. They packed in as much as they could. After that, chicken dinner in the Grove and then... Struts - Super fun! High energy! Revivalists - This is where things started going downhill. I caught their regular and VIP sets in 2013 and was very excited to see them again. Not so much. The sound bleed from main stage + drunk kids who were there to socialize and not listen to the music = not being able to hear a damn thing. I was less than thrilled. We ended up bailing and posting up for Shakes inside the safety of VIP. In the VIP bathroom, I was fussing about what was going on and met a woman doing her Phd dissertation on millennials. It was very interesting hearing about her research. Shakes - Brittany brought it, as usual! The setlist was all of my favorites. Loved! We stopped in the Grove on the way back to the condo, because The Weeknd and Chainsmokers.
Saturday, I had my sunscreen confiscated briefly. I pleaded with the lady, telling her how pale I was and that she'd surely damn me to fry. She gave it back to me and told me not to bring it back in. I totally brought it back in. We met Chick at the GA/VIP barricade for Stick Figure. And we waited.... and we waited. And a security dude said the set was canceled, but the app had not been updated. I guess the app dude had too much steak dinner the night before and overslept? I don't know. Anyway, we bailed and got back to the beach entrance just in time to hear them start up. SMH. We gave up on them and stopped in the Grove on the way to... Kaleo - Great energy! Rocking songs! The lead singer doesn't look like he should have such a mature, soulful voice because he's so baby-faced. They're from Iceland. I had no idea. After another break in the Grove to avoid heatstroke and because X Ambassadors... Kurt Vile - Exactly how I expected him. Pretty Pimpin', indeed! After a condo break... Atlas Genius - They covered Tears for Fears and the kids thought it was a new song. SMH Portugal, the Man - They don't need a hype man! What was that? Ugh! Anyway, the kids were pretty much going downhill at this point. GA was throwing empty beer cans at us. We've already mentioned the guy who got arrested. I sang along to "Evil Friends" and directed the lyrics at them. Yeah, I was pretty pissed. :/ Cage the Elephant - Redemption! We had a great spot in VIP and sang along to pretty much all the songs! Danced our butts off! We could never get any good pictures because the frontman moved around too much. But that was my only complaint. Stopped in the Grove for some drinks on the way to... Foals - We started pretty much in the back with all of the gossiping teenagers, but worked our way up to hear quickly. There was a mass exodus during Providence, which is my favorite song. I guess they were going to Panic! at the Disco? IDK Either way, I think we all ended up pretty much in the same spot, but none of us knew it. That's funny. We walked back to the condo to hear PatD sing Bohemian Rhapsody and have front row fireworks.
Sunday was the worst day for me. Usually, VIP pulls out all the stops to convince you to buy loyalty tickets. I just didn't see that happening this year. We started with... Continuum - In the pool...Reach the Beach winner. Everything was fine until people started bringing in their kids to splash around. And then gave us ugly looks because we're drinking and smoking at an outdoor, adult music festival. Ugh! Pool water in my beer. Gross. But the act was pretty decent. Their cover of "Hallelujah" was great! Wailers - I had more fun at this than I thought I would. I sand along and danced. They did a great job! I noticed that there were a lot of kids falling out on the GA side during this set. After this, we wanted to eat shrimp in the Grove, because shrimp and Coleman Hell, but the lines were too long. So, we downed some doughnuts and posted up for... Run the Jewels - OMG!! I've been wanting to see them since I watched the coachella livestream last year! They brought it! You could tell Killer Mike was happy to be back in the South. It was a fantastic set!! We were going to see Powers after this, but we didn't, because BMI stage and we were hungry. So, we go back to the Grove and they are OUT OF SHRIMP! PISSSSSSSSEEEEDDDD! If you increase the number of VIP wristbands, you must also increase the food! So, we go back to the condo to eat and regroup for... Lenny - Blown away! His production is top notch. His brass section killed it! I cried at "Believe"... reminded me of college. I think he played over his set time because he got cut off, so we high tailed it over to the Grove for... Courtney - What the Grove didn't run out of was alcohol. They must have been trying to get rid of it all, because the lady seriously overpoured me. I think there was just enough OJ in my screwdriver to give it color. Courtney was amazing! She's so shy and humble, telling us we must be tired. You just played SNL, Courtney! YOU must be tired! And finally... Flo - Beautiful production! Beautiful voice! Remember how I said I was overpoured? Yeah, it caught up to me. We left about half way through and heard the rest of the set on the balcony.
Overall, it was a fun experience. I think they did the best they could with the weather delay and the CH cancellation, but some areas need drastic improvement. When you have the lineup we had, you're going to get the crowd we had. If GV gave a shit about providing quality music to the South, as opposed to making it a "see and be seen" festival, the crowd would work itself out. We were at Atlas Genius and Scott had on his Hangout 2014 t-shirt. Some guy stopped us and said, "Now THAT was a lineup!" Yes, yes it was.

What the actual fuck is with confiscating sunscreen. On Sunday the main entrance tried to take my friends and I s sunscreen and throw it in the trash. It was not aerosol. Are you kidding me? It's an entire day in the sun. I literally had nothing else but sunscreen, my ID, a debit card and some cash. We got out of the line and went to the west side entrance and got right in with our sunscreen. I thought about stashing it at Chick's house if they still wouldn't let us in. Unreal.
Meanwhile everyone around me is smoking blunts, drinking out of flasks and applying blue lipstick every five seconds. BUT DON'T YOU DARE BRING SUNSCREEN TO THE BEACH.
But seriously, I would lose my shit if someone told me I couldn't bring sunscreen into a fest. Especially one on the beach. Are you kidding me? They can check it, whatever. But as someone who has already had skin cancer before I even hit 40, I take sunscreen with me at all times now. I really would like an explanation for this. Not that I have any plans to go to Hangout in the near future.
Edit: Seems it's just aerosol sunscreen that is not allowed.
Here are some things you might want to pack:
Liquid sunscreen, in nonaerosol container of 3oz or less Bug spray in nonaerosol containers of 3oz or less Small backpacks, bags, and purses (no larger than 20” x 15” x 13”) Blankets & beach towels Sunglasses and hats One (1) EMPTY water container up to 2 litres in size EMPTY CamelBak style water bladder systems subject to specific guidelines* If you need medicine, please note that prescription and OTC medications are subject to specific guidelines.** Baby strollers (if you have small children)

You ruined it for everyone! J/k
But seriously my sunscreen was one of those sport stick ones under 3oz but I guess since it wasn't liquid? That’s still pretty messed up. Also chapstick. Wtf with it having to be sealed? So for future reference you either have to bring a brand new stick in on the first day and rent a locker or buy three for a new one each day.
Pretty stupid. I saw a shit ton of people with aerosol inside anyway.
This would make sense why they would CHECK sunscreen bottles. But they were confiscating them without even checking. And what's with the confiscating chapstick?

I completely agree. I would be livid if my sunscreen & chapstick were taken away.
Sucks to hear of so many people having issues with security. This year was a complete joke for me, barely got tapped on my sides, just had to get my stuff out of my bag. Took 2 secs. Was the least invasive they've ever been on me.
