After doing the "10 Most Anticipated Acts" thread, I'm considerably more disappointed with the lineup now. That just means I gotta discover some new music. =)
So I just read the Rolling Stone article about the lineup drop and saw something interesting:
The full list of performers that Bonnaroo has listed so far is available on the fest's website. Bonnaroo producers are promising more than 125 musical artists total and more than 20 comedians, so they will be announcing more in the coming months. The four-day extravaganza will play out on 12 stages.
So... We are currently at 98 artists. Expect at least another 27 artists to be announced.
They do this every year. Now we just have to wait longer in between! Super Jam details didn't even come out till the schedule drop last year. They added like 10 people just for that.
But 41 is more than that 27 Rolling Stones just cited - so even if ALL those adds were Cafe acts, that doesn't add up right?
I took Calculus in college three times so let me help you out with this. 98 + 41 = 139
Bonnaroo producers are promising more than 125 musical artists total
139 > 125
Yes...I do in fact know that 41 + 98 > the promised 125 from the article. What I was saying is that, let's say ALL the adds ended up being cafe acts - all 27 adds; that number does NOT add up to the 41 Cafes we had last year. So we would have to assume that like 14ish acts from the lineup drop are Cafes? And that every single add will be too? This doesn't make sense to me. That is what I was pointing out. But thx for the math lesson.
Considering you've found the need to respond to my threads as if you are threatened by me I offer you some peace my confused counterpart. May you find peace in your restless soul.
How many of the acts currently on the lineup could play a cafe?
All of the acts on the initial announcement in 2014 played a tent, Which, or What. EXCEPT for Blank Range.
Interesting. I'm not too familiar with the very bottom of the lineup yet. Could any of those bands play a tent cafe?
I just feel like the way they've gone about the lineup so far really lends itself to a second set of additions. Either that or I really f*cking want Tame Impala and Modest Mouse added to lineup.
I think it is daring to make the festival this heavy with EDM. There are so many EDM festivals and mini Fests already. Apparently, they think it will sell and fits the vibe for Roo. After this years fest, we will know one way or the other.
Yeah, it sure is daring for Bonnaroo to book EDM in 2015. It's not like it's arguably the most popular genre among the younger demographic right now. What tastemakers! What trendsetters!
Also, booking 9 electronic acts isn't exactly "[making] the festival . . . heavy with EDM."
To be fair, they don't really give a full representation of the exclusive acts for each fest. For instance, Slayer, Pallbearer, The Very Best, and a few other decent ones are missing. Of course, that goes triple for Coachella, but whatever.

"More than 125 acts."
They could add 41 café acts, or 40, or 35, and it would add up to "more than 125."

edit: upon further inspection, it's not totally complete - for instance, tears for fears & EW&F appear to be missing. it's still a handy visual overall.
The fact that Tame Impala is playing Coachella, GovBall, Shaky Knees, and Boston Calling but not Bonnaroo really is bizarre to me. I never would have predicted that 24 hours ago. I know they played in 2013, but still
I just counted 190 acts total on the 2014 lineup. That includes comedy and cafe. So even with 20 comedy and 40 cafe acts, we have a lineup that's still significantly smaller

It's entirely possible that they're booking fewer acts.
Fewer acts + higher ticket prices = Capp Dogg paying off those gambling debts.

From the always reliable Wikipedia: Acts from Th-Sun on the What, Which, This, That, or Other 2012: 18/32/32/25 Total:107 2013: 21/32/32/26 Total:111 2014: 21/35/33/25 Total:114

Well no shit. My point being this was a low number of announced artists. Settle down there, fins. Don't pop a vein.
now it has "ben folds & ymusic" listed instead of just ben folds.
"Multi-platinum selling singer/songwriter/producer Ben Folds is releasing a new pop rock record written, arranged and recorded with the NYC-based ensemble yMusic.
Folds, who first found fame with the Ben Folds Five, has gone on to have a successful solo career, writing, recording and performing pop hits and a piano concerto, as well as writing and recording music for film and TV.
yMusic, which include some of the most sought after instrumentalists in the industry, is compromised of six musicians (Rob Moose, Nadia Sirota, Hideaki Aomori, Alex Sopp, CJ Camerieri and Gabriel Cabezas), each with bios that are bursting with accolades and performance credits that bridge the pop and classical music divide."
from their website: "Since their inception in 2008, yMusic has striven to bring a classical chamber music aesthetic to venues outside the traditional concert hall. Its members have individually toured and recorded with artists such as Bon Iver, Paul Simon, Bjork, The National, Meredith Monk, Antony & the Johnsons, David Byrne, The New York Philharmonic and Sufjan Stevens."

I definitely think a few of the names announced are already cafe stage acts. For example, Unlocking the Truth, who probably aren't old enough to command a tent slot (unless they're the first act in a line of metal acts). I'm also not too familiar with a few names on the bottom of the lineup. That's not totally indicative that they're too small to play a tent but I've seen a decent amount of "too big for cafe" names who've actually played cafe slots.
As far as big names, I think we'll get at least 1 add who's in the second tier of artists and a good 15 names that could fill some gaps. That's more than fine with me, middle of the lineup names are just as likely to excite me as headliners.

Has anyone heard anything from Mumford and Sons' new album? I couldn't find anything but figured some of you might be more on the cutting edge of what they were working on than I was. I was a fan of theirs in the beginning, but thought they were already tired in 2013, so they would have to come out with some Sergeant Peppers next level stuff on their next album to get me excited. I saw them in 2010 and 2011 at Roo and then in Louisville in 2012 and I feel they got less impressive each time.
I certainly don't begrudge anyone who loves them, but one of the problems I have is that their albums - despite this gritty depression era vibe they are shooting for - are way overproduced and over-polished so that it doesn't sound nearly as good live. Roll your Stone Away is a perfect example. Then they don't jam their songs out or do anything to make it different or interesting, so in my opinion their live shows are just crappier versions of their albums. When they covered Amazing Grace with Old Crow and others in 2011 was probably the best thing I've seen from them live.
Who makes guacamole happen!?!? Does a tabloid like the University of Oklahoma student paper make guacamole happen or do ME AND YOU make it exist? Just cause they write about it doesn't make guacamole exist - ME AND YOU MAKE IT EXIST!

unlocking the truth played the coachella main stage. they can play a tent.
This year's trend I don't get: bitching about artists who have played the fest recently and who tour heavily (eg St Vincent, Tame Impala)
If you didn't catch these artists last year or the year before or somewhere else on their tour, you can probably catch them somewhere in 2015.
This is why the ones I'm disappointed about are ones who I don't think I'll see otherwise. Father John Misty's tour is sold out in all of the cities I could see him in, Lorde would be far outside my price range at this point (which is what makes festivals so great) and there isn't any indication she's touring the US anyways. Those are the two I really wish were on the lineup.

What was going on with the Jimmy Fallon confirmation? Was that from that fake mock that was getting passed around? I saw it on the confirmation page last night and thought there may have been something to it. Any chance he would be added with the comedy lineup?
I think landing Fallon would essentially be another headliner, like Conan. I mean he IS the host of the Tonight Show which is a pretty big deal.
