If that's true, it actually kind of bothers me. I get that they're not obligated to play anything, but turning down that kind of money for a two hour performance is a little absurd. I get that they don't need the money, but they could always donate it to charity or something. It just seems like such an easy job to do for the money. And they're playing other shows so it's not like they're completely against playing together. Oh well, they're 100% free to do as they please.
Twenty One Pilots killed it at Roo '13 with their energy and I had a blast. I saw them again this year and it was pretty meh. I am kinda over their music and I think a lot of it was just how pumped they got the crowd at Roo and is a perfect way to start my first weekend on the farm. Also, in the show I saw this year they kept talking to a disembodied voice throughout set and it was real cheesy and hurt the flow of the show. The crowd when I saw them the second time was a younger one and than at Roo in '13. I am going to pass on them this year unless there is literally nothing else that interests me that is going on.
Agreed. I really enjoyed them in 2013 because it was the first time seeing them and I love their energy. I've seen them a couple times since and the excitement has worn off - and that disembodied voice thing was absolutely awful.
So the question becomes, did we get a "replacement headliner" or did everyone just move up a spot? If the lineup started with The Dead feat. Trey - Billy Joel - Mumford & Sons - Deadmau5, people wouldn't be wondering about where that extra money went... Come on Bonnaroo. Don't be the Idzik of the festival world. If you have $3million in cap room, go out and spend it!
I have a feeling that isn't the case though. The Dead and Billy Joel both seem like Sunday acts to me. I think Billy Joel might've been the backup plan.

You're thinking about this wrong.
I'd also wager that the headliner bookings were in place before the tickets went on sale. Ergo, they already knew what they had spent on headliners and didn't just say "shit, we need to raise an extra $3m in case the Dead decide to accept this offer!"

Oh I don't think they attempted to raise extra cash just for one specific act. But I think they knew how weak the headliner pool would be this year and knew that if they were going to book an act to put them over the top, it would have to be someone outrageous like The Dead, The Stones, Prince, etc. I agree that it's completely possible that all headliners were booked before tickets went on sale, but IMO it looks like they left space at the top of the lineup for one of those big gets. Normally, I'd agree that I'm giving them too much credit, but the news today proves that they were at least willing to shell out an extra $3million pretty late in the game.

While I wouldn't call Joel a replacement, I think they got him when The Dead didn't work out. They probably have a number of huge artists like The Dead that they reach out to with offers and for one reason or another it doesn't work out. So The Dead were their reach and Billy Joel was their safety.
Not the best music but I will tell you that their show will be one of the most energetic shows at roo all weekend. I won't be there, I am just saying that show will be pretty wild, their shows always are. The best thing they do is a cover of Gary Jules cover of Mad World
I had never listened to 21 Pilots until a few minutes ago.
Add them to my "avoid like the plague" list.
Yeah, I had heard of them all over the place, then got them as my band to announce. Thought I'd check them out due to that and was surprised...with how popular they are.

Let me inform you of the better original:
Haha, no, I know the Tears original, that's why I called it a cover of a cover (when 21 pilots cover it they try to make it sound like the Gary Jules version, not the tears for fears version.) And, to be clear, I like like Gary Jules version better than the original

Our buddy Mike made this video. I love seeing it pop up random places.
no shit? they play it on my local morning radio show i listen to quite a bit, like whenever the twins play the indians, we get to hear that gem
Yes we went to Kent with Mike. He actually has a reality show in the works with another college friend that's an author now. Latest word is that the pilot got the green light.
He has a 2nd tourism video, have you seen that one?

Every time I hear about icp, I think back to a guy I worked with years and years back who kept saying, "My son listens to the insane clown pu**ies. I don't know where I went wrong."
To be fair to north Florida, I have seen some great acts, foo fighters, pearl jam, janes addiction there. The scenery is much better then anything ohio has.

yea think i've seen the second one, but the first one sticks out. i honestly didn't even watch it when i posted today since youtube is blocked at work but it's "fun time in cleveland today! CLEVELAND!" "this is a train carrying jobs out of cleveland" or however it goes
Come on Faygo is wayyy better than any of those things.
I mean I get it. Its just a shame that Faygo always gets lumped in with ICP around these parts. I was drinking Faygo before ICP was a thing. And still enjoy a Red Pop from time to time. Never liked ICP though.

Florida: Endorsed by Memphis1979.
I've seen the Pacific, I've seen the Atlantic. No sunrise is better then the gulfs emerald water on a calm day from 20 stories up. All the endorsement it needs.
It would really make my life if My morning jacket did their cover of Rocket man and buzz light year was set to flight again for a second year in a row. This needs to happen.
I feel like people outside of Ohio don't realize how dedicated of a fanbase twenty one pilots have. They sold out 2 nights at LC Pavilion in Columbus (12k tickets) in a few hours. If they don't get the Which Stage they will have the most packet tent all weekend.
As an Ohioan, let me translate. People outside of Columbus, OH do not realize the dedication of the 21 pilot fan base IN Columbus.
They sold 8,000 tickets in Cincinnati where they had people all the way from Texas go and see them. Only point I was trying to make is that they're gonna have a massive crowd at Bonnaroo, but thanks for the Ohio jokes they were funny.

I've lived here (Columbus) for about 10 years now and I can say I've never seen them play. They don't appeal to me at all but people around here cream jeans over them whenever they play locally. Other than them wearing the bank robber looking masks (Bloody Beat Roots anyone?) I don't really get the appeal but good for them to get such a huge hometown following. That being said I have no doubt the Ohio faithful at Roo will pack the hell out of whichever tent they end up in
