There's twice as many bands I would see, so I'm sorry if you aren't into it. Not listing Atomic Bomb is crazy btw.
Sorry, this lineup is lame. And judging by the reactions around here, for once I'm not alone in saying it. Even the acts that are good/great on this lineup for the most part are either going to be everywhere this year or were everywhere last year.
The general consensus on this board is that this is a great undercard. Yes everyone hates the headliners but not the whole lineup. Atomic Bomb, TfF, EWF, and Madlib are 4 off the top of my head that I haven't seen any other fest get.

...I don't think that's the general consensus, at all. Some people may think that, but many do not. Look no further than the "rate the lineup" thread, where about half the respondents rated the lineup a 6 or lower.

So what? I'm not going to be everywhere this year and wasn't everywhere last year so I can't/didn't check out a bunch of these acts when they were. Now I'll have them all in one spot and while I'm sure some will be missed out because of conflicts (fucking Roo Scheduling) it's not a detractor to me that acts have toured a lot.

There's a lot to love about this lineup.
It's really not worth arguing about this, at all. I'm truly disappointed in the lineup because it seems like there are a lot of acts on tour right now, with schedules that would accommodate Bonnaroo, which haven't been saturating the landscape in the past couple years, which could have been booked. Instead, it's a lot more of the same. Maybe there is a great round of additions coming which will take care of this, but in my personal opinion, which I've seen echoed by many other people around here since last night, they dropped the ball.

I think "there's enough to love" about this lineup might be the better way to put it. I really don't think the headliners or the undercard are anywhere near as strong as the last two years. 2012 I think had better headliners and a comparable undercard. I think this lineup is on par with 2011 overall, and I went that year, and it was fun, because it's really hard to have a bad time at a major music festival. Hell, I had a decent time at Lolla last year, and that's a lineup everyone could agree was shit. (Ironically, some of the better names on this bill I saw there last year: Courtney Barnett, Temples, Spoon, Royal Blood, Benjamin Booker, Run the Jewels).
I'm baffled as to why they decided to raise ticket prices with a lineup like this. The average festival goer is not gonna shell out $400 for this when there's probably a closer festival that's decent enough for $150.
I feel like last year the top 25 was stacked. It's making this years look really bad in my opinion.
Yeah lots of top 25 worthy acts were way down the lineup last year. This year I keep looking at that 3rd line, everybody on the 3rd line could easily be on the 4th line. Throw any of Tame Impala, Rattatat, St. Vincent, Ryan Adams, or Modest Mouse on the beginning of that 3rd line and move a few acts down for them, the lineup becomes a whole lot deeper.
I think Horn nailed it. Look, unless you're a complete waste, you'll have fun at a big fest. But since that's almost a given, that shouldn't be the baseline for judging whether or not a festival nailed it with the lineup.
One last note on the "general consensus" thing, using the completely scientific "Rate the Lineup" poll:
Right now, 81/154 rate this a "6" or lower. That's 52.5% of respondents.
Only 17% of respondents think this lineup warrants an "8" or greater. Approximately 30% give it a "7."
So basically, the majority of the people responding think this is a "D" or lower. The grade getting the largest response was a 7, so more people think this lineup is a "C" than any other grade.
Are we thinking they might have a really solid set of additions, seeing as the announcement was so much earlier than usual - and maybe they were scrambling to get the lineup out when others were dropping so quickly?
I counted only like 100 or so, there should be quite a bit more added. Not sure how many will crack the top 20 though.

And for all we know they tried to get some of those acts but it didn't work out. I've also seen it echoed that a lot of people love the lineup. So we have both seen praise and criticisms of the lineup. Just like every year. The "Rate the Lineup" thread has a vote of 7 out of 10 winning the poll. I'd say that's pretty good. A good amount of acts that you would have liked to see aren't on the lineup but I have a lot to be excited about. I don't get to do a whole ton of shows during the year and acts like Benjamin Booker (sold out NYC show coming up), Mac Demarco (wasn't able to catch his shows when he came around), and Punch Brothers will be great to see even though they've been around my way already. Throw in the Superjam and surprise shows and I'm a happy Monkey Trainer.
Not really trying to argue with you but even with the shitty headliners who would be your ideal, realistic 10 acts to follow that? Like, what would have made you say "Bonnaroo hit it out of the park this year" and declare it one of the best lineups? I think I ask you this every year lol
edit: I see you already addressed the poll/rating thing. But really, take out the acts that blow and fill in the acts you wish got and who would have made this lineup a 9 or 10 for you?

I think it's a weak lineup, but I'm really going to have to wait and see the additions and a schedule before I completely judge. There's enough to keep me entertained for a weekend, but if there are several conflicts with artists I want to see, I'm going to have a lot of dead time. Tears for Fears and Atomic Bomb are the only surprises on the lineup that get me excited.

I understand that they can't just get everyone they want - I'm usually the first one to point that out when people are like "KENDRICK SUCKS SHOULDA GOT JIGGA!!!!!!" So while I don't necessarily fault them for not landing/booking certain acts, it doesn't change the fact that they didn't do so.
And some realistic acts to follow? Hot Chip, TV on the Radio, Noel Gallagher, Tame Impala, St. Vincent, Beck. All touring, all with open dates.
Last years scheduling didn't make me want to jump off a bridge like years before it. I don't need 50 or 100 names in a line up I'd be dieing to see. 20 or so is more than enough, as long as it's scheduled right. Sure my standards are likely much lower, given that I only really get one or two opportunities to see music I actually like, but seeing 4-5 acts that you're into per day should be good enough for most people? There's still a chance that could happen, so I have no real complaints about the line up.....yet.

I guess I'm still just blown away by EWF, Tears for Fears, and Slayer. My headliners are Florence, MMJ, and Kendrick. Plenty of good bluegrass for me too. Lots of smaller acts I want to see, especially Sturgill and Jungle. I'm thinking the New Basement Tapes is a good possibility. I don't even want to look into the Atomic Bomb! because I fear I have enough to worry about as it is.
I get to (barring conflicts) dress up 80s style and 70s disco funk all in one weekend and dance my ass off. This makes me terribly happy for some reason.
Early lineup drop makes me think too we're jumping the gun on judging at this point.
Tame Impala, St. Vincent, Beck. All touring, all with open dates.
Great point. The other acts, too, but those three would have pushed this lineup over the edge for me. I saw your other post in the Coachella thread that also helped me see your side of thinking with the acts that Coachella got that Roo didn't.

Yes, scheduling for me will help me decide how I feel ultimately in the end. I do know that I can leave early on Sunday for our 10 hour drive home though which helps a great deal.
Also, ITM, at some point I'm going to need you to unlock the headliner thread, as people will need to be able to quote posts to support their nominations for the Headliner Thread Allstar Team.

I was out having a late dinner last night and the guy sitting behind me was bitching about Billy Joel headlining this beast. I thought I had a kindred spirit, then he started regaling his friends of the glory days when he went and Bruce and Phish headlined, and I was thinking "ok, well maybe," then he started telling the Kanye story so I tuned him out.

lol yea, let me know when the committee is meeting.
Using the rate the lineup poll to make a basis for judging JUST the undercard isn't logical. That poll takes into account headliners. I still stand by saying that the general consensus believes the UNDERCARD is good.
I've only seen 9 of the acts, and there are 42 that I want to see as of now, counting the ones I've already seen and would see again. And this is without additions or comedy. I bet we get a top 10 name, 2 in the 11-25 range, and a couple name comedians in the additions, not to mention the superjam announcements Let's not jump to conclusions before the whole lineup is released (although that's the point of this board, isn't it?).
If you like this lineup as it is, then I am happy for you.
If you don't like the lineup, but believe the additions might cure what you don't like about it, then I would recommend tempering those expectations. Ok, the lineup was earlier than usual this year, but it already contains 90+ acts. History has taught us that we cannot reasonably rely on lineup additions to have a significant impact on any Bonnaroo lineup. It is rare, and a fool's errand. I recommend only buying a ticket on Saturday if you have resolved that the current lineup is worth the price of admission to you.
