Fair enough. I don't think that performance changed anyone's mind about Drake, I just thought Pharrell was a bad example. I don't even like the dude that much, he just gets an unwarranted amount of hate on here. Remember when the general opinion was that Drake wasn't big enough to headline Roo? Lol.
It's a weird situation with him. Two years back he wasn't "big enough" to headline Made In America (but he did have one of the biggest crowds of the weekend). Suddenly this year, I don't think he has really grown in popularity, but festivals like Coachella and Gov Ball are billing him on top. Some might say it's due to a lack of headliners touring this year; but I am sure Coachella had other options and chose to go with him. Just weird.
Of course he has, his Made in America performance was in 2012, he's put out a ton of material since then and practically all of it has been a commercial hit.
I don't agree with that. I used Pharrell as an example; but their have been many times I have seen acts at festivals that I thought were going to suck and wound up being pretty awesome or vice versa. I had high hopes for Eminem at Roo '11 and it wound up bombing for me. I got dragged to Beyonce at Made In America a few years ago and she completely blew my mind and changed my opinion of her entirely.

I'm not a fan of drake, but I will say that performance increased my opinion of him. The madonna shit was dumb, but otherwise I thought he was solid. Definitely glad roo got kendrick though.
I don't know why everyone is hating on Drake. That performance was gold and gave me the best drinking game of the weekend..
Seriously though, I don't hate Drake and was pretty excited to watch his set. I didn't expect to be blown away or anything but I didn't expect to actually break into hysterics at multiple points. It was like passing a car accident you can't help but stare at. There were moments where it really wasn't bad; the beats were on point and he even showcased that he can actually rap, but overall it needed help. His setlist was all over the place too. The performance had no flow to it and I'm not sure he played an entire song? I was very let down. I am not a Drake- hater, but after that I completely understand why he gets all the hate.
Also, fuck Madonna. Really? Out of all the collaborations Drake has done over the years with way more inspired choices, he picks Madonna to come out? I think it was a real missed opportunity for special guests there. Shit, he even did his song with The Weeknd, who played the festival, and didn't have him come out. No Em, no Wayne, no Nikki. All would've been kinda predictable but better than freaking Madonna. What a lame guest to have to owe Jaz a beer over, but deals are deals.

Sense the sarcasm of that first part. "Best drinking game I had all weekend." Was one clue, the next was starting off the rest of the post with "Seriously though..."

C'mon Launchpad. Be better.
To be fair it was a good excuse to use the Game of Thrones gif
Not a fan of Drake but I watched the web stream hoping for an entertaining show, these were my take-aways:
1) The campfire? Wtf was that, that was too cheesy 2) Madonna, it just seemed really forced and generally awkward 3) Pacing, is Drake's catalog this down-tempo? It felt kind of sleepy in some parts 4) He lacks authenticity and the Madonna thing only backs that statement up (why did he agree to this?) 5) Listening to his lyrics had me very confused...isn't he the same guy that played Jimmy the wheelchair boy on Degrassi on Nickelodeon for like 4 years? Judging from his lyrics, who knew he was living such a "street" lifestyle that whole time?

He wasn't. That's a problem myself and a lot of people have with Drake.

I have the same problem with the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Tolkien never even went to Middle Earth. The whole thing's made up.

THIS EXACTLY! "Started From the Bottom" was the first song Drake released under Cash Money that I really enjoyed, but it also frustrated me so much. You don't have to be a huge Drake fan to understand that he did not start from the bottom. He literally began his hip-hop career by founding a record label!

Next you're going to tell me that Johnny Cash didn't just shoot a man in Reno, just to watch him die.

I have no one to blame for reading this whole Drake argument but myself.
It's the car wreck phenomenon.
Going to be honest, was not a fan going in. Tried to tough it out, but got sick of being squashed like a bug. So I got the fuck out of there (that was some fun) and listenened from the nice soft grass in the back while I stuffed my face with tacos.
I liked pretty much ever show I watched on the live stream this weekend Run the Jewels (if Gangsta comes out at roo I'm getting on stage and asking for a hug) and Todd Terje and Jack White being up there at the top but the underdog of the weekend for me was the Gaslamp Killer Experience, I had heard of this guy because I'm a fan of Daedelus and they've worked together in the past so I just told my buddy to turn the stream on for a sec to check it out... Holy. Fucking. Shit... Apparently that only the second time ever that he has done the whole live band for a GLK show but boy does he need to change that. I have seen some of the trippiest bands in the world and just the live stream of the GLK show was mind melting. If you didn't see it, keep your eye out online and hope someone captured it because it was almost certainly my favorite show I watched of the weekend (and that's coming a RTJ fanatic) and if you saw the show and you didn't like it, you're fucking insane and should immediately go get your ears checked because something is wrong

He has a line on the song Headlines about "catching a body"....but other than that, I can't think of any other song he performed that would imply he had a street lifestyle. But maybe I've just stopped noticing that sort of thing. I don't understand what you mean by he lacks authenticity and the Madonna thing backing that up. Like is this related to him "acting street" and then bringing out Madonna? Because again, Drake doesn't act very street. He has a song called Madonna, which Madonna loves, and they're good friends. So it actually made sense to me when she first came out....and then the train wreck started...
I do agree the pacing was weird, his shows are usually a bit more energetic. But I think he just wanted to perform a lot of new stuff which happened to be slower. The Madonna thing was indeed suuuuuupppppeeerrrr awkward. That crowd did not know her songs. I'm not against her being a guest, but the execution of that was terrible. I thought the campfire and the waterfall was funny though.
Y'all should just stop arguing about it. Drake sucked. Not even debatable. Sure he has some decent tracks on record, but he showed last night he can't hold down a stage solo. And the Madonna antics were just weird. No one in the crowd even knew who it was till she said "I'm Madonna!" at the end. Hell I thought it was Janet Jackson when she first appeared on the stage.
Are those times set for the east coast zone or west coast?
Where are set times? I just saw it listed the people who will play (with no time) and then it said it starts 2pm eastern. But I've no idea who plays when. Jk, just saw em, apparently I was fucking blind for a few minutes there, haha (My dad just bragged to me that he and my mom are gonna see Alabama Shakes tonight cause they're out in Vegas - what a dick, I'm watching their kid for them so they can be out there!)
And a reminder that Coachella Weekend 2 is live airing on AXS as well if you have that channel. It's from 9pm-4am all three nights. Last nights replay should be on before tonight's live portion if you want to watch/record it.
