i get where they're coming from, but this is pretty weak on their part. instead of bitching about the competition, just burn down flushing meadow park so there is no competition!
Ugh, how about they just book a REALLY kickass lineup and show Panorama they won't just lay down!? Fucking weak sauce. Whatever, I'm sure one of these two lineups will pull through.
This is a pretty desperate move but they pretty much have to do something to try to prevent this other fest from happening. I don't believe there's any way there can be 2 big fests in the same city, probably trying to book similar artists, that close together. It's kind of a dick move of the new fest to try to have it at that time. They know that 2 fests couldn't be successful. They're trying to push Gov. Ball out. What will probably end up happening is both fests will fail. No one wins.
I had a dream last night that panorama was announced and it was the last weekend of September and the first weekend of October. This would be ideal for me but not happening.

I think competition will make the festival stronger but I understand where their worries are coming from. The only thing they can do this year is put out a great lineup this year and hope that there are enough loyal fans. Very childish for a company to use a change dot org petition to get the mayor to deal with a business issue like this.

From what I could tell they wanted to do a festival in June in NYC and that's why they reached out to Governor's Ball initially about investing or whatever.
If a big concert promoter/company wants to do a Music Festival in NY area in June and they are denied their first attempt then I don't see a real problem with starting up their own. Dick move? Maybe....but isn't it also kind of a dick move for Governors Ball (which is a festival I love and hope survives) to act like they are the only ones who should be allowed to have a festival around that time in the summer?
Do they know that 2 fests couldn't be successful? If they (Panorama) really thought that it couldn't work why would they waste so much time, effort, and money on starting one up? Obviously they think there's money to be made which is why they originally reached out to GovBall.
I guess we will know more when the lineups come out and if Panorama stays on the scheduled date but I feel like there's plenty of good acts and music fans who would keep both going pretty well. I'm hoping so anyway. I would love two quality summer music fests in my neck of the woods.

"The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord approaches... born to those who have thrice defied him, born as the seventh month dies... and the Dark Lord will mark him as his equal, but he will have power the Dark Lord knows not... and either must die at the hand of the other for neither can live while the other survives... the one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord will be born as the seventh month dies...." if gov ball was in july it would be uncanny how accurate this harry potter quote would be to this situation.

The petition is a pretty weak move on their part. But to be fair, the petition isnt to prevent Panorama from happening, its simply to get them to move the date so its not 2 weeks after Govball. I signed, because I am all for this. I would love to be able to go to Govball in June and Panorama in September.

My guess is that AEG already got enough artists in contract not to perform any other NY festivals.
I used to love Skate and Surf Festival when I was a kid, and I remember the whole debacle when Bamboozle came around. They booked their fest for a month earlier, and had their artists all sign ridiculous radius clauses that fucked Skate n Surf over. They ended up having to cancel and lose their deposit on the venue.

Well, if the rumors for the headliners are true, then, Gov Ball is off to a very strong start (for me at least)

for the sake of argument, why couldn't we have two festivals in one city less then a month from each other? Chicago has it with Pitchfork and Lollapalooza

Pitchfork and Lollapalooza are on two totally different scales, neither of them are really a threat to each other.

Something about fighting over bands and also that there aren't enough people who will go to both. The idea being that instead of definitely going to one festival now they have to choose between the two and that will hurt both. I don't think that's the case but that's what I feel like the argument is.
We're writing you today to ask for your support to help keep Gov Ball alive for many years to come. We started the festival back in 2011 with one goal in mind: to bring a major music festival that New Yorkers could call their own to our hometown. One that was specifically curated for the eclectic music lovers of New York City. One that featured the very best of NYC cuisine. And one that operated with the attendee experience as the #1 priority.
As a small, independent company in an industry dominated by major corporations and rapid consolidation, we've come a long way and given hundreds of thousands of you first class entertainment. Sadly, today our future is in jeopardy and we need your help.
As reported in The Daily News and multiple industry news outlets, AEG is lobbying the Mayor’s Office and other city agencies for approval of a major festival in Flushing Meadows Park in Queens two weeks after Governors Ball. The timing of this proposed event is an aggressive, greedy attempt by AEG to push a small independent company of born and bred New Yorkers out of business and out of the market.
We are writing you today to ask for your support and tell the Mayor’s Office and the City of New York to reject this proposed event that would take place two weeks after Gov Ball. We are asking that this proposed event take place at another time of year because this would allow both events to succeed. Please help Gov Ball survive and continue to serve you - the fans, friends, and family - for many years to come!
since this thread seems to be more about the fight for NYC's festival land rights, I figured this was the best place to post this. Just got htis email from Gov Ball.:

The "greedy and aggressive" line was misguided. Should have gone with something like "we welcome new festivals in New York, and wish AEG success. But as we add new events, let's do it in a way that's sustainable for everyone."

So this year Governor's Ball had
Drake Deadmau5 The Black Keys Florence and the Machine Bjork Lana Del Ray
And people are positive that they'll nab Radiohead, when they didn't get one veteran headliner act this year. From this lineup it looks like they were going for a younger crowd, with the exception of Bjork. Just my opinion, bludgeon me lightly lol.
So.. This thread title can never change? Because it kinda sucks
No, the thread title stays, to honor Launchpad. Launchpad was a good scooper, and a good man. He was one of us. He was a man who loved the outdoors - and scoops, and as a surfer, he explored the beaches of New Jersey, from Ventnor City and Long Beach Island and up to Sandy Hook. He died, he died as so many young men of his generation before his time. In your wisdom, Lord, you took him, as you took so many bright flowering young men at Khe Sanh, at Langdok, at Hill 364. These young men gave their lives. And so would Launchpad. Launchpad, who loved scoops. And so, Theodore Launchpad Chinstrapos, in accordance with what we think your dying wishes might well have been, we commit your final mortal remains to the bosom of the Atlantic Ocean, which you loved so well. Good night, sweet prince.
