Just going to throw this out there but if they're remaining on the low for headliners, I think we have something big this year. My guess is Mumford & Sons for Friday in conjuncture with their upcoming collaborative album and with that, they could invite raury and baaba maal with them. On Saturday, I'd love to see Ryan Adams acoustic and maybe bring some friends on stage to join him (i'm looking at you, norah jones). And finally on Sunday, I could see Newport doing a tribute collaborative performance like they have the past two years with The National leading a "Day of the Dead" tribute for the Grateful Dead with some guests from the upcoming album, on stage. Just an idea...
I have been listening to the videos from the Grateful Dead 4ad tribute and they are phenomenal! If this could happen at NFF I would be over the moon thrilled! The National can do no wrong in my book and they have gathered all my faves for this album.
I started thinking about a Day of the Dead show at Newport a couple days. Unfortunately I'm pretty sure the Eaux Claires one has been advertised as the only one. Not sure if how official that is or if they're obligated to hold to that, but if not I'd support that 110%

WBRU has announced their lineup for the free shows they're putting on at Waterplace Park in Providence this year.
On July 22nd Lucius will be playing... So as expected Lucius will likely be at the fort again.
On July 29th Aurora will be playing. She'll also be playing Panorama on July 23. And has nothing scheduled in between. Not sure if she would be on Newport's radar or not but she blends pop with subtle hints of folk influence so she could be a possibility.
Upcoming Shows: August 7: Green Day/Smashing Pumpkins/Rancid/The Linda Lindas August 30: Waxahatchee/Snail Mail/Tim Heidecker September 17: Pearl Jam/Glen Hansard September 24: Idles/English Teacher
Getting seriously excited for this.. Ourobonos is a great album, grabbed me on the second listen. The songs burn slow and the whole thing rocks the hell out in the second half. I'm really hoping for a Fort Stage set!

As promising as that seems, Luciuis are also playing Wayhome in Toronto on July 24. They seem to like Newport enough to try to make it work (and if bands can play Sasquatch and Boston Calling in the same weekend anything is possible), but RI to Toronto in a day is a tough jaunt.
Those WBRU shows don't usually start until 7:00 I believe and there is an opener.
You're right then, that would work. However they work it out, I'll be happy as long as they make it to the Fort. I'm still pushing for Saturday so they have ample opportunity for guest spots. Then an overnight drive to Toronto!

Yeah it would be disappointing if we don't get the full potential of them.
That being said, I don't think they are doing anything Thursday, so look for them to maybe show at the pre shows etc. if they are going to Newport
Is Lucius still appropriate for Newport? Their new album is not folk. I know that they are friends with everyone there and that Jay is pretty lenient with the "folk" tag, but it just seems that another artist would be more appropriate.

Ray L new album isn't very folk anymore, they still announced him.

I mean, it at least shares some similarities with the genre. If you had an algorithm match it to similar albums you'd likely get stuff from My Morning Jacket, Joseph Arthur, Kurt Vile, The Arcs, and others that can be written off as Americana.
As for Lucius, if you fed the new album into a recommendation algorithm, I'd expect you'd get St. Vincent, Jr. Jr., Yellow Ostrich, and indie pop acts.

NFF CONCERT UPDATE: April 19th - Julien Baker - Holy crap this was an amazing show! I don't think I've ever heard a crowd so quiet. She's pretty awkward on stage, but in an adorable way, if that makes sense..
April 20th - Father John Misty - He's always great live, but the crowd was ridiculously obnoxious and the screaming girls who were seemingly getting drunk for the first time sort of ruined things for me. Also, he didn't seem to talk as much as I've seen him do before, which I always enjoyed. Looking forward to seeing how his solo set comes across though! (excuse the crap photo)
April 27th - Matthew Vasquez - Wowy Zowy what a killer show! Great setlist with new stuff, Middle Brother, and Delta Spirit tunes, as well as some covers. He had great stage presence too, from his Rock & Roll power moves, too changing lyrics in quiet songs telling people to "Shut the fuck up". I asked him after the show if he was playing any of the Newport aftershows, and he said he didn't know yet, so I guess they're not booked. I was also wondering how his show would translate to the Newport stage, because it got pretty heavy at times, but I noticed on the announcement on his Intagram account he said "I've already spent weeks toiling over this set. It's going to be something special!". So, yeah. Fun!
That's actually a really cool get, imo. They broke up years ago and recently got back together. I'm not a fan of the new record but I am stoked they are playing again.

Of course you would...
Hipstergrass. Little known fact, GL was a big alt. country fan before it became alt. country. The 90's were a strange time in my life.

There is zero percent chance Day of the Dead plays at Newport. It's Aaron Dessner's pet project, he's not going to debut it somewhere else before Eaux Claires, which is also his festival. I'd also say there's about a zero percent chance of Bon Iver/Justin Vernon.
