Ira Kaplan: "We've been told that most people at this festival will have seen us before, and that we should do something unusual." Me: (I haven't...)
Still, that was a beautiful long-form jam they did. Even though I would've been happy with a standard show, this was a once-in-a-lifetime treat. They simmered, boiling over just a couple times. And the encore of Sun Ra's "Dreaming" was the perfect cherry.
Oh, and I forgot to tell y'all! Last night at the Tennessee I ran into one of my old professors from music undergrad. Turns out she's playing the festival as a member of nief-norf! Hope to see some of y'all at their show today.

Agreed - but if you liked that, make sure you catch some of Kamasi Washington's set (if you haven't before). His group captures a lot of that energy...

Was on my way to see Glass, but noticed there was already a pretty long line for Outside the Dream Syndicate... So that's that; I really need to see Faust once this festival!

Laurie appeared to want the Faust/"Outside the Dream Syndicate" set to be "about the music" (or maybe it was just a little too loud on stage). She started by standing behind her amp, and eventually left the stage completely, playing behind the stage right amp. Set was great, though, so I'm not complaining (just noting). Anyone stay for the drone jam? I was there for the beginning, and again, noticed that Laurie was stationed behind one of the amps off the stage. I had thought she'd give some sort of an introduction/direction or at least participate in the same space as the audience-performers. Maybe that happened later... dunno... I ended up leaving after about 30 minutes, as I wanted a good night sleep for this epic Saturday line-up.

We booked it to The Sanctuary after Glass and Muhly were announced (my nephew is a huge Glass fan) and ended up first in line. Despite the significant delay, sitting ten feet away from EBB and Maya Beiser and Nico Muhly and PHILIP GLASS HIMSELF playing "Music in Similar Motion" will do down at a lifetime high. We want to see the end of OtDS and I was kinda bummed not to see Anderson present, although it was still great. We wound our way back later for the Drone. I had brought my melodica to participate... listening to lots of improvisational music always puts the bug in me to play. Sad there weren't more people there playing, but it was still a very cathartic experience.

I bet!! I really wish I could have seen both. The only reason I chose Faust over Glass is that I've seen him perform at least 6 times (since 1989!), and had never seen Faust. So as much as I loved the OtDS set, I'm really sad that it was at the cost of seeing Glass at the Sanctuary!

I did. Ended up getting lost in Drones. I've been particularly upset with the schedule and every venue hitting capacity, this year. I didn't even try to leave The Standard till it was sleep time.

Well. I hit my first Big Ears dud (first in 2 years!). The Glass/Anderson combo just didn't work at all for me. The levels were off, and while I appreciate "free" music, a lot of this sounded unintentionally arhythmic & atonal. I love both of these artists... Just not this set. I should note that everyone else seemed to be loving it, so I'm sure it was my ears that were off...

I've kept my eyes out but I'm horrible at spotting people.

Halfway home, you guys. I'll have full thoughts up later but I just wanted to say thanks for all the hangs from people I know and fresh faces I met. Wonderful weekend, folks.
