What do y'all think the odds of Tortoise playing Levitation next year? I think they would be a good fit the same night that Flying Lotus plays.
That would be a nice add...can see them fitting right in. I'm also expecting Domino's new artist Alex G to at least get consideration as well. Check him out some nice mellow indie-psych. Would LOVE to see Wand and King Gizzard+lizard wizard

And I'm sure King Gizz will have a new album (or two) out by then.
If they can pull in GOAT and King Gizz too, I may just burst into pure energy shimmering in the air.
I mean, seriously. If they book GOAT and King Gizz, which I think there is a decent chance for both, this fest would be my dream lineup. I would have a hard time curating my own fest that would be better.
Now if they can just get The Mars Volta to reunite, I might just have to dedicate my life to the Reverberation Appreciation Society. But I also wouldn't be shocked to have Antemasque pop up. I know they've booked the Omar Rodriguez Lopez Group in past years.

Also wonder is Melodys Echo chamber is a guarantee after they dropped out of last years lineup late. Similar to what happened with primal scream the year before. However they were headliners at levitation France a few weeks ago so I guess it remains to be seen.

That year they booked Omar ended up actually being The Mars Volta so who knows, maybe they can pull it off again! Speaking of the name Omar, i hope they get Omar Souleyman since he has a new album on the way..

Ya, I ended up catching that tour in Houston. When Cedric walked out on stage and then stayed for the whole show, I was pumped
So is Flying Lotus considered psych rock now? I guess I'm a little disappointed that Levitation/APF is veering from its psych/noise/stoner rock pedigree.
In either case its a superb festival and its definitely still on my festival A-list! I'm sure the next lineup announcement will have some nice gems.

Considering the original name was just PSYCH Fest, it shouldn't be shocking that they are getting FlyLo, who is one of the most succesfull psych/experimental electronic musicians around. Is he psych rock? No. Will he put on one of the trippiest shows all weekend? I guarantee it. I love psych rock and Levitation's devotion to it, but I feel the opposite of you because I trust their taste/decisions enough that I think they will only go out the usual comfort zone for acts that they think would still fit in, but add some diversity. Just give him a chance man, go to his show and I am willing to bet that you have no complaints when you walk away.
I've always looked at it as Psychedelic music in every form. It just happens that what can be classified as psych rock happens to represent a large portion of the bill.
They've always had artists that don't fit in the psych rock mold. I'd argue that Brian Wilson and Animal Collective aren't psych rock either. But they absolutely fit under the umbrella of psychedelic.
Always admired that if their lineups, it all fits under the name of psychedelia, but is so diverse.
I absolutely cannot wait for Flying Lotus, he's going to blow some minds that night.
This lineup. It really is a thing of beauty all ready.

And I'd be one of the ones that you'd be arguing with about Brian Wilson. Pet Sounds in not only one of the first psychedelic rock records but it's still one of the most influential records of that genre. Not only that but Brian Wilson was the first person to use the theremin in rock on songs like "Caroline, No" & "Good Vibrations".

Very true. I guess I meant in the traditional fuzzed out, reverb drenched psych rock sound that's often associated with the tag. Absolutely a pioneer, no denying that.

I guess disappointment would be too strong of a word. I've seen FlyLo on three occasions over the years so I'm all about his music and live performance. His music has definitely taken a more psychedelic turn since his most recent album so I suppose it would fit the bill for Levitation.
APF/Levitation has always been known as a psych rock fest to me, so maybe they are trying to switch gears to accommodate psychedelia in the electronic and hip hop realms too. More power to em! I just don't want them to turn in to another boilerplate catchall fest that you see everywhere nowadays.

Just from the year I attended, I can remember seeing Silver Apples, Quintron and Miss Pussycat, and Warpaint doing material from their latest, more electronic album. I wouldn't consider those to be psych rock. Flying Lotus is a great fit for Levitation IMO and doesn't change my view of the fest or its promoters intentions in any way. It's definitely a set I'll be looking forward to.

Ah, see, to me Levitation is just psych in general, not just psych rock. That being said, I hope they don't get any psychedelic hip hop in the future. FlyLo should be the furthest the branch out in that way. I think Panda Bear last year and FlyLo this year are certainly fitting and are great ways for them to change it up from all the psych rock, while booking artists that appeal to the same crowd. I will say though, it's really difficult to think of other acts that I think I could fit well because, honestly, FlyLo is even a bit of a stretch for Levitation. I would be REALLY excited if they booked Gaslamp Killer (preferably the "Experience" with the live band of course.)

I think we can all agree, that's not in danger of happening. Levitation and FYF are leading the pack in continually booking some of the best lineups in the country.
When the festival bubble bursts, these will come through the fog.

Yeah no doubt! I should hold back any real criticism of Levitation until the rest of the lineup gets released. Carry on...

I have a feeling when the rest of the lineup drops, we are all gonna need to bring a change of underwear to work because it's gonna be weird explaining to all your coworkers why you came in your pants.

That's how it was when I saw this year's lineup =)
The question is, when will the bubble burst? (Aside from another global economic recession).
2017-18 range
See, I think 2018. I can't figure out whether I want it to burst or not....I feel like it's good for the regional/niche festivals for the bubble to keep building up because it's getting more and more people to start attending festivals, so it's increasing their sales without them having to try to appeal to a wider demographic. Though, I honestly don't think it matters for festivals that have already created at least some following at this point.

I don't think they are switching gears; I just think they're just trying to get a bigger audience to ensure the longevity of the fest. I'm really not worried about it. I think that the Reverberation Stage will have the acts like FlyLo while The Levitation Tent will still be noisy as fuck with bands like Sleep.
Nothing wrong w bending styles and genres. Austin is a hotbed of music festivals so complacency will lead to death. This fest occurs less than 2 months after SXSW and several weeks after Euphoria (in the same location).
The only thing I could think of right now is a link to the festival's website. Eventually you will have to update the poster when the other bands are added and add the kick-off parties poster and the campground line-up poster. When we get closer to the fest you might want to add a list of the inforooers going like Rothric did for the Levitation - May 8-10, 2015 (Formerly Austin Psych Fest) thread.
