My dream 2016 Lollapalooza Lineup
I have attended Lollapalooza from 2012-2015, and one thing always remains true: I am guaranteed to enjoy myself. In the beginning, Lollapalooza was an alternative festival, that broke ground for indie upstarts such as Arcade Fire, alternative future rock legends like Jane's Addiction, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Smashing Pumpkins. It was also one of the first festivals to include a stage primarily committed to the bleep-blorps and clangs of EDM, with the arrival of Perry's. Today it is considered one of the top festivals in the United States. However, the lineup hasn't quite reached the heights of some other heavyweights such as Coachella from 2011 and more. They brought a hologram Tupac, had Kanye West deliver an epic set, and actually got Dr. Dre to perform. Bonnaroo stirred up controversy by bringing back Kanye in 2014, after his uproarious set from 2008. They had Kendrick Lamar headline the mainstage, on the cusp of his recent classic To Pimp a Butterfly. Not to mention Jack White's late night throwdown, where he played an additional 75 min after being late. Even some of the newer fests such as Governor's Ball got praise, for boldly bringing Kanye in 2013, where he debuted a lot of Yeezus tunes and removed the muddy fields blues of the weekend from the fans. So how come over the last few years, when people talk about legendary sets or moments...Lolla gets left out. If I could devise a Lolla lineup, this is how it would look, everyone needs a change up once in a while.
Must Haves for a Successful Lineup
Female Led Acts -Last year, Lolla brought a whopping 25 female acts, that's roughly 25% of the lineup. No need to stop now, keep them coming. From my four years of attending Lolla, I have noticed that the women often deliver more powerful sets, are more passionate, and have raw energy. Prime examples; Metric(2012), Florence(2012), Lorde(2014), Sylvan Esso(2015), Phantogram(2014), easily some of my favorite sets of all time.
So what female acts should they bring?
St. Vincent- This was a shocker when she didn't play Lolla this year. She played all three South American versions, but when it came to playing stateside we were left without her presence. Reportedly, she got in an art destruction fiasco while playing in the South American Lollas. I would have let that go, and let her play this fest. Even with no material set for next year, if she comes out with an EP....she needs to be on the 2016 lineup. I have seen her twice, and for the last two years I can boldly say that she holds the crown for best show of the year hands down. GET HER.
Placement: Pre-Headliner 6:30-7:45 on North Main Stage.
Grimes- Now that this pop-art chanteuse has signed with Roc Nation(Jay-Z's Label), perhaps C3 is eyeing her for next year. The only account I have for her live, was her hypnotic Pitchfork set from 2012. She has the whole package, including backup dancers, her own edit/DJ kit which she makes tunes from in real time, her voice is unlike anything you'll hear(comparable to a Bjork), and it is fun time.
Placement: Grove(Not Pepsi) closer 8:45-10:00pm
Missy Elliot- What happened to this Queen of hip-hop? She was tearing up the dancefloor with "Control", we appreciated getting our freak on, and even the men took a hint from her bold and cheeky song "One Minute Man." There were glimpses of a return but no dice. Will 2016 be the year? Originally I pegged her for a Riot Fest act, she's very popular like Gwen(No Doubt), hasn't come out with anything in a while, and would be a fun act. If Outkast can disappear for years and decide to come back to the stage, surely Missy could. I think she rides this thing out from Coachella, Bonnaroo, Firefly, Glastonbury, and Lolla.
Placement: Pre-Headliner on the main stage from 6:00-7:15. She's got plenty of hits, and she deserves more than the Perry's treatment.
Miley Cyrus- Now before you bludgeon me with your disdain for her raunchy behavior and shock value, listen up. Miley Cyrus attending Lolla would send the lollapagoers in a frenzy. She's fun and amusing, just view any of her SNL skits, her VMA setups, or that epic MTV special she did about her Bangerz tour: the girl can throw down. Recently, her and the very trippy Flaming Lips decided to tour together, this caused a massive demand for tickets: they sold out in epic fashion. Lolla sells out blind, so why not take a chance on this wacky ordeal. People would eat it right up, I know I would.
Placement: Honestly I think Miley could handle her own on the main stage, and with the flaming lips there too...it's prime for a night set. I would put her on the North main stage from 8:30-10:00. Let the chaos begin.
Adele- This year Lolla switched things up by having two soulsters/pop stars play the main stage: Sam Smith and The Weeknd. Could this be a trend going forward? As long as they keep it in this realm vs a Demi Lovato, Selena Gomez, or Taylor Swift...I'll be down for it. One thing that Adele and Sam Smith and most likely the Weeknd, they have critical acclaim, fan base, and won/will will Grammy's. Sam smith and The Weeknd both had massive crowds against giant headliners Metallica and Paul McCartney. It's young vs old today, and Adele bridges the gap. Both generations admire her work, and while she may have anxiety of playing huge festivals: maybe being a mother has changed her outlook on things. Come on Adele, this would be a sing-a-long for the ages.
Placement- South stage from 8:15-10:00, closing out Sunday.
Don't Haves
Female Led Acts such as the ones Below
Rihanna- She has the charm, the shock, and the voice: qualities that would be perfect for a lineup such as Lolla. So without bias why don't I want her anywhere near Grant Park? Rihanna is perhaps one of the most overrated artists of this generation. As time has progressed, her music has declined in value. She went from "pon de river" to "S&M"? She went from "Umbrella" to "Only Girl in the World." Heck she even sampled Michael Jackson on "Disturbia", and that one annoyed me. From the countless videos I've seen, she doesn't seem sincere in her performances. Lip-synching most of the words, having elaborate setups, and being more of a hype performer than being interactive. She's pricey too, roughly 500,000 buckaroos...please don't bring her.
Ellie Goulding- She's a burst of energy when it comes to her recordings, but throw her on a stage and she gets lost. When I saw her at Lolla in 2013, she had the charm and obviously the looks, but her bands bass was super heavy, her voice couldn't project to the middle of the crowd, and it all seems too forced. If she just let's go and embrace the moment like I've seen her do more recently, then she would be great next year, but until then skipppp.
Azelia Banks- This artist has been praised by major publications such as Pitchfork, Rolling stone, and Billboard. She doesn't get my approval. Her music is very unique, she blends hip-hop with everything from Salsa to regetton, but she has a major ego trip. She has cancelled so many shows, and people keep giving her a pass. She cancelled Lolla in 2013 randomly, she cancelled Glastonbury this year: she claims she's "broke with expensive tastes", and if she doesn't get her act together she will be the former. Don't waste money on her.
Let There Be Rock!!!!
-Just because bands have a guitar, bass, and a rather handsome guy who can sing...doesn't mean they ROCK. I love Walk the Moon, Catfish and the Bottlemen, Two Door Cinema Club, Phoenix, Vampire Weekend, but that's not Rock. Where are the bare bones, don't give any fucks bands? I know they exist, because Royal Blood, Black Pistol Fire, and Brand New have popped up on the Lolla lineup.
So what about 2016? Who shall rock!
The struts- These guys have a classic rock feel in my opinion. Their EP was fun, it rocked and was loud and obnoxious. The lead singer has a certain rugged attitude and the band has an old soul. This band is a must have for any rock fans at Lolla next year.
Placement: Get them there early! 12:00-12:45pm on North main Stage.
Beach Slang- This band continues to churn out very raw and powerful tunes. They remind me of gaslight anthem, but with even more bite. It was my pleasure to have witnessed them at Riot fest on a small stage. The lead singer had so much pain and attitude on the stage, and you could hear a pin drop with the amount of attention from the audience focused on the stage. They were in my Top 10 of acts I saw that weekend, and Lolla should follow suit.
Placement- Closing BMI stage from 6:50-7:20.
Swans- I'm not big into post-hardcore or hardcore for that matter, but this is an act that Lolla should get undoubtedly. This is some strong and brutal rock that would have people praising Lolla for the awesome weekend they endured. Every major publication has considered a Swans show to be epic in every sense imaginable. I've seen Lolla bring Baroness, so fans of Baroness would surely appreciate Swans.
Placement: Grove closer, 9:00-10:00.
Roll Away from this Rock
- Imagine Dragons- I was a fan of these guys in 2013. Downloaded the album, heck even the ITunes special edition. When they played Lolla in 2013, I was overjoyed, but due to the massive crowd: sound bleeding caused the set to become a wash. As I left the set early, I was eager to jump at the next opportunity to see them. Sadly, that opportunity never came, because they didn't come near me, and they were pricey. Flashforward to 2015, they've returned! That's what my initial reaction was, until I heard a few cuts from the new album and almost barfed in my ears. This was audio diarrhea at it's finest, they are collecting the checks and providing no substance what so ever. It's so damn poppy and overproduced. They might be able to deliver a show, but that fire they had in the beginning is turning to ash.
Coldplay- Don't get me wrong, I love Coldplay, but have you heard anything past Viva La Vida(which I enjoyed), that was worth a multiple listen? They lost me when they had Rihanna do that ridiculous track "Princess of China" on Mylo Xlyto. A majority of that album was throwaway hogwash. Then they returned with Ghost Stories, from the first single "Midnight", I knew something had gone sour. Then they followed that up with "Magic", I mean who's writing this stuff, an infant? Then there was the EDM track that had S-E-L-L-O-U-T written all over them, you know which one..."Sky full of stars." Blech! At least get Skrillex to make it somewhat unique, you got one of the most plastered EDM acts out there in Avicii. Supposedly, Coldplay is calling it quits momentarily, they'll do one last tour and even have a new album, and while a return to Lolla seems like a good idea from C3, they need to look at the band now vs their hey-day, because it's not the same.
Black Keys- Love these guys music, but enough! Stop booking these guys. I know I am not the only one who feels this sentiment. Clearly, they rock the house every time: I've seen them at Lolla and a show in my hometown of Rochester NY, but it's time for some new blood. These guys are pricey too, asking for roughly 250,000 a show. A steal for a headliner, but could be spent on some newer faces. They rock, but it's time to roll away from these guys. That includes the Arcs....no Dan and no Pat.
That real hip-hop!
Lollapalooza has tried its hand at getting legitimate hip-hop acts, but keeps missing the ball. Last year they had Outkast, who were was amazing, but where was the supporting cast? Surely Gambino was awesome, and I heard Nas was awesome too, but that day should've had a nice focus on hip-hop. Hell at least have Nas on the main stage? G-Eazy got a grove slot? Seriously.... Young Thug closing BMI? At least 2 Chainz got a grove slot. There needs to be balance in the acts and where they are placed.
Great hip-hop acts for Lolla.
Mac Miller- This year Lolla had Kid Cudi and A$AP pre-headline stages to massive crowds, and I think Mac would hold his own quite well. His flow and lyricism is impressive, he brings a lot of energy to his show, and he connects with the audience just like Cudi or Gambino. His recent tour sold out worldwide, he's ready for his shot. This is a no-brainer, I would be shocked if he didn't play.
Placement: 4:00-5:00 on North Main Stage.
Danny Brown- This year Lolla brought two shock value acts in Zebra Katz and Tyler the Creator. It doesn't get more shocking than the foul-mouthed, animated lyricst Danny Brown. It was so great to see him turn the Other Tent into a frenzy at Bonnaroo, and surely Lolla would be turnt up if he hit up Grant Park. His energy and his humor presents a winning combo, and a memorable set. This would make me real happy.
Placement- 3:30-4:15 on Palladia stage. It'll be a big party and a hazy delight, don't miss him.
Kendrick Lamar- The biggest fest he played this year was Bonnaroo, and from the reviews he was awesome. However, he seems to be scaling back on his recent album and delivering a similar set to his previous ones. In hindsight, how could we complain about him delivering the hits? Simply put, he has to find a way to balance all his work into a nice blend of tunes. Considering that Lolla is in late July next year, Kendrick should have plenty of time to figure out how to mix it up just right.
Placement: South main stage from 8:30-10:00 on Friday.
Just Don't
Future- Admittedly I don't mind Young Thug. He has a certain swagger and braggadocio I admire, even if sounds like Alien rap. Speaking of Alien Rap, meet Future. This rapper has been getting critical acclaim and a wide fan base over the years. This alien rap trend should just fade away, they say in space "no one can hear you scream", well I'm on Earth and listen up C3: THIS IS NOT THE FUTURE. Yeesh. This isn't smart rap, it's not creative, it's not fun. It's warble without any direction. From the reviews, his live shows aren't anything special either.
Nicki Minaj- When Nicki first burst onto the scene, I considered her to be a breath of fresh air to the rap game. Her mixtape and Pink Friday were both fun and boasted some dope lyrics. Then she went super poppy to crossover into the mainstream which was fine, until it became overkill. Very similar to Taylor Swift overkill. How many songs about butts are we gonna hear? It's not even a real butt... Definitely one of the worst samples for a song I've ever heard with "Anaconda." When she first stepped to the plate, she was the new kid on the block, now she's stepping on anyone who gets in her way from Miley to Taylor to Drake. She comes across as gimmicky and I think her show would show a representation of what she has become vs how she got here. Damn Nicki
Drake- I enjoy Drake's music. He's a good songwriter and is an interesting singer. However he suffers from the syndrome that most rappers today have started called "start-stop method." When you have as much support from fans as Drake, you can get away with this method. I'll go online and look at his setlist and I'll say "wow, he played 25 songs?." Then I'll go watch a set on YouTube, and say "Did he finish a song?." It's surely a nice adrenaline rush, he delivers that first verse with so much energy(no pun intended), and then stops and gets applause: finishes with "I killed that shit, let's hit em with another one." You semi-killed that shit Drake...instead of teasing us, just give us the whole Drake. Add a story, add some lights, add a band...he gets all this hype and then doesn't deliver. Maybe he will get better, but if the Coachella crowd deemed him as the "worst headliner in Coachella history": then I can't be lying.
Legend....aries!
Lollapalooza has had it's fair share of legends grace Grant Park, from Pearl Jam, Radiohead, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and more recently Paul McCartney and Metallica. However, they don't utilize acts that aren't quite headliners anymore but still deliver the goods. There have been glimpses like New Order playing a pre-headliner spot in 2013 on the main stage, Mavis Staples played in 2010, The Cars played in 2011, just to name a few.
So what legends should show us their not just nostalgic?
Duran Duran- These guys have comeback with one of their best reviewed albums in years, and their tour has been going great. They even made a festival appearance at Life is Beautiful and delivered one of the best sets of the weekend. They haven't lost a step, and those fans of Metallica might have some love for these guys too.
Placement: Pre-headliner from 6:45-7:45 on North Main Stage.
Tears for Fears- Here's another band that disappeared for a while, but made a few tour stops: including a classic set at Bonnaroo, and the Houston festival Free Press. If Cure got the response they did in 2013, surely Tears for Fears could too. Thousands of Lolla goers singing "Everybody Wants to Rule the World", sounds good to me.
Placement: Pre-headliner from 6:00-7:15 on South Main Stage.
Lionel Richie- He's still got that natural energy and charm from his peak days, and he's still got a band that can keep up with him. That's a winning hand, and while his set can't go all night long: it would surely feel that way.
Placement: North Main Stage headliner from 8:15-10:00. Or pre-headliner from 6:00-7:15 on South Main Stage.
Take a Chance...Take a Chance...on Them.
Lollapalooza has always had some picks that show their eclectic nature, such as FKA Twigs last year, 2014 had Darkside, and 2013 had/did not have Death Grips... However those acts are few, far, and between. So who should cast a spell on Lolla next year?
James Blake- This is easily one of the most unique acts I've ever seen. His set at Bonnaroo 2014 was our magic, his band brought the bass, and his vocals were extraordinary. People rave about this guy like they do about Frank Ocean. His set wouldn't be accessible to the massive crowds of Lolla, but on a smaller stage he would shine.
Placement: Grove closer 8:45-10:00.
Animal Collective- They've played Lolla once I believe, but that was when they were younger and not as experienced. After seeing multiple sets online, these guys would be perfect for Lolla. Their moody dance electronica would be as well received as Glass Animals or Hot Chip.
Placement: Lake Shore closer 7:00-8:00.
Tanya Tagaq- Who? She does what with her throat? Yes the mercury prize winning throat-singer from Canada would be a rare treat for Lolla. Somehow this woman weaves her throat through a melodic and sensual rhythm that illuminates the senses. It's different, fun, and would leave Lolla goers with nothing but awe.
Placement: Grove 1:30-2:15. A little afternoon delight.
The reason you're all here. Headliners!
After Lolla had a misstep with their 2014 headliners, they came back stronger with their 2015, but I feel like they could do even more. Here are my ideal Top 6 for next year.
The Rolling Stones- It will be Lolla's 25th anniversary as a festival, and after nabbing Sir Paul: it's clear that the sky is the limit. The Stones have played Glastonbury, and no other major fest in the US. This would be a booking for the ages, they could play new material off their upcoming album, play deep cuts, a tour is in place for next year, and they haven't missed a beat. Make it happen C3 and you'll be GODS.
Radiohead- It's been 8 years since Radiohead played Lolla. Since then they've only gotten bigger! They had two masterful sets at Coachella and Roo in 2012, and King of Limbs sent the internet into an overjoyed pool of emotion. With a new album around the corner, the fact that Radiohead drummer Phil Selway randomly showed up at Lolla this year, and a tour in place for the summer: we can all be apart of something special.
Kendrick Lamar- Already mentioned in my hip-hop segment, Kendrick is ready for the world, with a band and nice stage production: it's a prime headliner show that would kick off Lolla just right. Also think about his TDE family and other special guests, he's friends with Dre and the Game? Woah!
Gorillaz- Damon Albarn is tough to book, whether he is apart of Brit pop legends Blur, solo, or with indie cult act Gorillaz. He's expensive and he won't play just anywhere. With the news of a new album on the way and potential plans to tour next summer, I dare C3 not to book them and see what happens.
Disclosure- I've seen this powerhouse EDM act twice and they impressed me. They sing, they play guitar, drums, and have a very glowing stage setup. Now with their new album here and garnering well deserved buzz, next summer wouldn't feel right without this act at Lolla next year. Please bring some special guests to make it even more memorable.
Frank Ocean- I was lucky enough to see him at the coveted Metro venue in Chicago for an aftershow. He is one of the most unique songwriters and performers of this decade, and he's got a funky and soulful band to boot. With his second album on the horizon, a 4 year return back to Lolla is exactly what we need for our soul.
Hopefully this gets you excited for Lolla next year, and maybe you'll come up with your own breakdown of what your ideal Lolla would entail. July can't come soon enough!
I wouldn't mind this top 3. Although I feel like there's going to be an inevitable step down after Macca/Metallica/Flo, and I'm not sure Radiohead/GNR/Drake is quite large enough of a step down to be realistic.

Muse US tour dates out today and Chicago is skipped. Barring any additional dates, I could see Muse being in our top 6, which I am more than okay with!

Hope this is the year Kanye returns. Been wanting to see him play in his hometown again, but not getting my hopes up giving his recent feelings toward music.
Muse US tour dates out today and Chicago is skipped. Barring any additional dates, I could see Muse being in our top 6, which I am more than okay with!
With their current production setup, I don't think they play Lolla this go around. Would be sick if they did play, I've never seen them before.
Yeah pretty much. I mean if they were going to hit Chicago they'd have announced by now except if they were playing Lolla.
Where would they be in the top three? They were 4th in 2011 and I can't see them playing the North stage again.
they still played the south stage in 2011 despite being 4th and Coldplay being 3rd, who played north stage that same night. Muse would definitely be top 3 this time, maybe 2nd but probably 3rd.
edit: they don't have an Austin date on there either but play Houston and Dallas in December.. maybe they do Lolla and ACL 2016?
It's nice and all. But you're not very good at this..
What would you predict? Since you've taken dislike to my guess lol.
I don't dislike your guess at all actually. That's why I said "it's nice and all". It's just entirely unrealistic. I'd be all for it. As for my guess, scroll up a bit and you'll see

I would say in the number 3 spot. This is just wishful thinking though as I'd like to see two big names ahead of them on the poster
I could see Muse being number 2 with one big name ahead of them. I don't think Live Nation and C3 would splurge two years in a row on two massive headliners like Macca and Metallica.

Holy shit, did you actually write this all on a phone?
You mean that a lineup that including the Rolling Stones, Radiohead, Coldplay, Adele, Rihanna, Drake, Gorillaz, Lionel Richie, Black Keys and Kendrick Lamar is unreasonable?

Why are you doing this to yourself? And to us, for that matter? Like did you really just write these for us, or are they being posted somewhere?
Just excited for the lineup. I'm not posting on here anymore. Just did everyone a favor. Geez
I had terrible social skills as a kid and was generally picked on. Always been kinda goofy or clumsy. Laughing at myself is something I've got good at. Also I'm aware I say stupid shit sometimes. You guys cracking on me usually gives me a solid laugh too lol.
Now, not only do I have zero impulse to make fun of you, but I want to make fun of those who do so in the future. Well played, "walaka." You just snagged yourself an alliance.
