I just had no idea 1975 were that popular. If you told me Walk the Moon or 21 Pilots were HL as that 7th or 8th act, sure.
Walk the Moon is not nearly as big as The 1975, and I can't see twenty one pilots ever headlining a major festival because their music is absolutely terrible I don't think enough people actually take them seriously.
2015 | Fleetwood Mac, Father John Misty, Bleachers, Wussy, Walk the Moon (x2), The Black Keys, Kacey Musgraves, Old Crow Medicine Show, The Avett Brothers, Shakey Graves, twenty one pilots (unfortunately), The Front Bottoms, Snoop Dogg, The Rolling Stones, Future Islands, alt-J, Courtney Barnett, The Gaslight Anthem, Com Truise, Girl Talk, Run the Jewels, Modest Mouse, Kendrick Lamar, Danny Brown, Broods, Brandon Flowers, Sam Smith, Goo Goo Dolls

Agreed WTM is no where near as popular as the other two. In fact, Twenty One Pilots just sold out 2 nights at MSG.
I literally didn't even know The 1975 existed still. To be fair, I'm an older hippie guy, but I haven't heard anyone talk about them since I saw then perform at Hangout 14 and thought it may have been one of the worst performances I had ever seen. I coulnd't name one person in my circle of musical friends or counterparts who even know who they are and we are a big festival bunch.
1. The 1975 are booked for some very big rooms/arenas in advance of their album dropping.
2. The people who lay out the money for those large shows have access to more sophisticated methodology then the informal polling of Inforoo members' peer groups.
Now I'm no 1975 fan, but a lot of people seem to think they are going to be a big draw this summer. Are they right? I guess we will see.

Oh I'm with ya. Just saying how mind boggling of a shoot up that is for a band in between albums that hasn't been in the US. They have really gotten big in the UK and worldwide. I compared it to the giant jump Imagine Dragons took after being a mid-day fest act after their first album to a headliner before their second album dropped. It worked out well for the promoters as they sold out the arenas and headlined a few fests that drew crowds but I doubt we'll see Imagine Dragons headlining anything again soon unless they produce a big hit new album on the third try and people look back on those fests like "oh wow, we went to that". This is just a little bigger of a jump in terms of being a low billed side stage act to headliner possibility. I'm sure there are plenty of people who like them I'm sure. But the days of traditional multi hit, multi successful album headliners are gone I guess in favor of these one album commercial successes.

Their live shows got really bad in the second half of 2014. The lead singer was on the verge of a complete mental breakdown (which happened later that year) and they had been touring nonstop for a year or so before (I think they won some award for playing the most shows of any band in 2014) so they were really tired. Some of the festival performances are on YouTube and they're beyond cringeworthy.

I'll put it like this, every festival I went to last year had WTM have a massive crowd. 21 P had a larger crowd than WTM, because that fan base is massive. If you scheduled 1975 vs 21P, or 1975 vs WTM....the latter would have more audience. Also even though The 1975 has a high booking at Firefly, those don't coincide with where Lolla is going to put them, and with even more acts coming- don't be surprised to see them at least 4-5 lines down.
I don't know how WTM is not nearly as big as 1975, when I could classify Shut Up and Dance as the song of summer 2015 and I have never heard one 1975 song. I would argue that WTM is larger in popularity than both of them.

WTM is bigger than 1975, without a doubt. If you asked the average listener, I'm sure they could name a WTM song without difficulty- 1975, not so much. We saw WTM this summer with Catfish and the Bottlemen, Matt & Kim, and Alt-J- they played right before Alt-J, and easily stole the show (actually, Matt & Kim were great too). They put on a very fun, high energy show and don't take themselves seriously. They had a decent billing at Lolla last year, and I could totally see them headlining a Saturday night type spot at different fests.
Also, has anyone heard the new 1975 single? At first listen I thought it was new WTM...
walk the moon might get another boost in popularity... their new song 'boyfriend' is even more shitty and bubblegum pop than shutup and dance with me.
i had trouble listening to 30 seconds of this.
Good point....fuck em all.
im not gonna lie, ill always be a big fan of TOP even though they sold out a bit on blurryface. the 1975 have a few good songs, but god dammit walk the moon are a joke of a "band".

I think the same thing about 21P and partially Walk the Moon so my perception is probably skewed.

I've seen both in concert and enjoyed them, so I guess I'm in this boat as well

A fellow on the Lolla boards said that LCD were in, but something happened and it fell through. So that sucks. But hey did you hear the news about Seger touring in 2016?

No clue about that Lolla boards dude, but if someone put a gun to my head and told me to guess the Lolla headliners or they'd shoot me, I'd still include them.
