For me, this makes the Lolla vs Bonnaroo argument a little bit harder. This is the first year where there was actually an argument for me, and Lolla just pulled another card out of their sleeve.

My friends and I have done Lolla twice now (2011, 2013) and the added day makes it easy to decide to go back for 2016. Both times I've been so impressed by the layout and ease of Lolla. Lineups for washrooms, beer, food are never bad and the proximity to downtown is awesome. So pumped for the extra day of music and in Chicago. Makes the trip from Toronto that much more worthwhile! Can't wait!
2017 Shows Sam Roberts Band, Wilco, Local Natives, Ryan Adams(!), Chance the Rapper, Future Islands, Frightened Rabbit, TOOL, Field Trip Music Festival, Gary Clark Jr., Arkells w/July Talk, Gorillaz, Tom Petty, Metallica, Muse, Incubus, Lollapalooza (!!!),Kings of Leon, Deep Purple & Alice Cooper, Father John Misty, War on Drugs
The average sundown time is around 7:50-8:05 during Lolla so the headliners perform in the dark. Launchpad 2.0 can't see this but at least the rest of you know.
Well, definitely not as early as 7, but yes sunset is around 8:00 in early August in Chicago. Right about the time headliners are taking the stage.
Edit: nevermind. I can't read.

It doesn't make much of a difference, but headliners usually start 8:15-8:30, so it's definitely dark enough. If the headliners are good, Lolla is decent.

Maybe they'll actually get Kanye this year....
Last year I was interested in mostly only the headliners, and I had a great time. I doubt I'll go all 4 days, but I usually always visit grant park at least once during the weekend.
To get even more premature speculation rolling: The 1975 don't have a Chicago date on their spring tour:
4/18 - Los Angeles, CA @ Shrine Expo Hall 4/23 - Las Vegas, NV @ The Chelsea at The Cosmopolitan 4/26 - Portland, OR @ Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall 4/27 - Vancouver, BC @ Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre 4/28 - Seattle, WA @ WaMu Theater 5/2 - Denver, CO @ Red Rocks Amphitheatre 5/3 - Kansas City, MO @ Starlight Theatre 5/4 - Tulsa, OK @ BOK Center 5/5 - Austin, TX @ Austin360 Amphitheater 5/7 - Houston, TX @ Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion 5/8 - New Orleans, LA @ Bold Sphere Music at Champions Square 5/10 - St. Augustine, FL @ St. Augustine Amphitheatre 5/11 - Miami, FL @ Bayfront Park Amphitheater 5/17 - Brooklyn, NY @ Barclays Center 5/18 - Lowell, MA @ Tsongas Center at UMass Lowell 5/20 - Toronto, ON @ TD Echo Beach 5/21 - Rochester Hills, MI @ Meadow Brook Amphitheatre 5/22 - Columbus, OH @ LC Pavilion 5/24 - Milwaukee, WI @ Eagles Ballroom 5/25 - St. Paul, MN @ Roy Wilkins Auditorium
I hope you're right but...look at the sizes of the venues they're playing. On par with what the Arctic Monkeys were doing en route to headlining in 2014.
Attending my first lolla this year, looking into flights at the moment. Should I figure Thursday is going to start around noon and try to fly in by like 9 or 10 am?

There will likely be aftershows on Wednesday, so if you want to go to one of those you should plan on flying in on Wednesday.
If not, flying in on Thursday morning is fine unless you want to explore Chicago (which you totally should).

That's absolutely true and also worries me a bit as well, but for another comparison, Imagine Dragons played similarly huge venues (even some of the same that The 1975 are playing right now) in spring 2013:
5/7 - Charlotte, N.C. @ Time Warner Cable Arena 5/8 - Raleigh, N.C. @ Red Hat Amphitheater 5/10 - Boca Raton, Fla. @ Sunset Cove Amphitheater 5/11 - St. Augustine, Fla. @ St. Augustine Amphitheater 5/16 - Denver, Colo. @ Red Rocks Amphitheater 5/20 - Orem, Utah @ UCCU Events Center 5/21 - Boise, Id. @ Idaho Botanical Garden 5/23 - Edmonton, Alberta @ Shaw Conference Centre 5/24 - Calgary, Alberta @ BMO Centre 5/29 - Los Angeles, Calif. @ Hollywood Palladium 5/31 - San Francisco, Calif. @ America's Cup Amphitheater 6/1 - San Diego, Calif. @ Open Air Theatre – SDSU 6/3 - Phoenix, Ariz. @ Comerica Theatre
Of course, they played to one of the biggest crowds of the weekend, but they still played a side stage in the afternoon (and let's not forget this band played 45 minutes in the grove!). I think The 1975 will also play to one of the biggest crowds Lollapalooza weekend. I just can't see them doing that as a headliner, though.
Very possible that there are unfilled headline slots at the backend that they will finalize in Jan/Feb. With 4 north stage slots they might be waiting to see who to give the bump - be it a 1975, Haim, Cage the Elephant, etc.
They've bumped acts up to headline late in the game - like Avicii.
If the new 1975 album charts well in the US I can definitely see them taking one of the lower headlining slots. I wouldn't be all that upset - I'd rather have them than Foster the People, Hozier, or any of the other low quality "indie" acts that I cannot stand right now.
2015 | Fleetwood Mac, Father John Misty, Bleachers, Wussy, Walk the Moon (x2), The Black Keys, Kacey Musgraves, Old Crow Medicine Show, The Avett Brothers, Shakey Graves, twenty one pilots (unfortunately), The Front Bottoms, Snoop Dogg, The Rolling Stones, Future Islands, alt-J, Courtney Barnett, The Gaslight Anthem, Com Truise, Girl Talk, Run the Jewels, Modest Mouse, Kendrick Lamar, Danny Brown, Broods, Brandon Flowers, Sam Smith, Goo Goo Dolls

Cool, yea my sister lives out in Chicago so I've been a few times, and she lives about a 10 minute walk from Grant Park which is going to be awesome.

The 1975 have gotten pretty big, and are even doing an US arena tour this sping, but come'on they wouldnt headline! They're 10x bigger in the UK and they still dont headline festivals there.

Lolla has trouble getting 6 headliners without including a few head scratchers. 1975 as headliner 8 of 8 isn't that crazy. Hopefully it doesn't happen but who knows.
If the 1975 can book arenas in big markets before their album has dropped, they can get a look at that 8th slot.
There are people here that don't think platinum-selling arena act J. Cole would make the top 10 at Bonnaroo, so it's not like the 1975 need Inforoo currency to be credible.
Twenty One Pilots and Walk the moon have played twice in the last 4 years, and are huger than The 1975. Neither has headlined Lolla, and neither has had a pre-headlining spot. The 1975 aren't headlining only two years removed from the 2014 lineup, when they played The Grove. Hell WTM played Lake Shore this year, and I was pretty sure they'd get a 4pm ish Main slot.
Yeah the havent toured the US since 2014, have no new music since then, and were 36th on the poster at Lolla that year. Sure they have an impending album release and have gotten bigger globally but thats an ascension crazier than Imagine Dragons to headliner staus.
