I went ahead and spent $420 (uh huh huh) on 6 tickets at 3 per each weekend. I'm not sure which day I'm going to sit it out or if I end up going with one or more of my kids on a given day who don't have money for tickets. Ranking the days, I have it:
Second Sunday First Saturday First Friday First Sunday Second Friday Second Saturday Jam Thursday (usually my favorite day but not super into TTB; would prefer them subheadlining for Dead & Company or someone else
What are the chances they'd have Pearl Jam and Van Morrison on at the same time? I don't think unopposed headliners is a thing here, correct?
Pearl Jam will be on the Acura (main stage) and Van Morrison will be on the Gentilly Stage, at the same time. There are never unopposed and they have three main stages that duel.

Looks like maybe a lot of Jazzfest first timers this year? Should we discuss Jazzfest food?
I'm just going to post some food.
Cochon de lait poboy, king of all jazzfest foods. second picture is me with a cochon de lait at jazzfest a few years back and two random strangers who were as excited about the food as I was.
Trout Baquet, another one of my all time favorites, certain years rivaling the cochon de lait. When I want fish this is exactly the dish I want.
strawberry cheesecake. okay I know it's just cheesecake but its PERFECT. plus they sell it right next to the trout baquet.
no jazzfest is complete without a bag of cracklins you walk around with all day and break your teeth on. better than bacon.
just a small sampling of some of my favorites. bottom line is if it is your first time at jazzfest, do not miss out on the food at the festival. it destroys any other festival's food. bonnaroo's food is horseshit compared to jazzfest's. horseshit I tell you.

Debating making a 5-6 day trip out of this the first weekend, since I've never visited New Orleans. Is that stretching things out too long if I'll probably skip a good portion of the early acts to check out the sights?
I think I'm for sure going second Friday and second Sunday. Might be skipping first weekend entirely, though I'd like to go Saturday. Ready for some aftershows.

just an FYI in case you weren't aware, headliners play from 5pmish - 7pmish
I never commit to Jazzfest until they release the cubes. A good rule of thumb, which doesn't always work but is kind of accurate, is to find days that you really like someone in the top 5 acts listed for a day and someone you really like in the 6th-10th act listed. They will probably not conflict. The top 5 acts listed ALMOST always conflict.
It's pretty easy to figure out the formula, though. Big classic act headlines the Acura Stage and is typically listed first on the daily lineup. More modern big act headlines the Gentilly Stage (unless the more modern act is pretty obviously more popular than the classic act) and is typically listed second. The hip hop or R&B act headlines the Congo Square Stage and is typically listed third. And the "local" big name or medium tier classic act will play the Jazz and Heritage Stage and is typically listed fourth.
For example: First Fri will probably be Steely Dan on Acura, Gov't Mule on Gentilly, Janelle Monae' on Congo, and Michael McDonald on Jazz and Heritage. First Sat will probably be Pearl Jam on Acura, Van Morrison on Gentilly, Maxwell on Congo, and Boz Skaggs on Jazz and Heritage. First Sun will probably be RHCP on Acura, Nick Jonas on Gentilly, J.Cole on Congo, and Herbie/Shorter on Jazz and Heritage.

every now and again a "bigger" mid-tier act gets thrown in the blues tent too and it can get really crowded.
the jazz headliner in the jazz tent can also be pretty crowded. the jazz tent is fantastic though if you get in.

For me sa2 > su2 > sa1 > fr2 > th2 > fr1 > su1 I like Weekend 2 much more than Weekend 1 (even if you don't consider Thursday) but both weekends are still quite strong.
This isn't accounting for conflicts though. Van Morrison vs Pearl Jam on Saturday 1 and Stevie Wonder vs Beck on Saturday 2 is a bitch, as is Paul Simon vs Ms. Lauryn Hill on Friday 2.
