David Gilmour playing second saturday? Jeff Lynne's ELO closing down Gentilly one day? Dead & Co to close her out? Mumford given thursday instead of a 2nd tier jamband?
Last year was Pannic. The year before was Cheese. I don't know if they would go 2nd tier, but I'm not sure who they would bring in as a big jam draw since that's what they have turned locals Thursday into. And since Phish played 2 years ago, they will be out. January is usually lineup, right?
They had Panic in 2013 on thursday too. Eddie Vedder was supposed to be on thursday in 2012, but canceled over throat issues and got replaced with Jimmy Buffett. Wilco was thursday 2011 headliner.
Mumford is probably too big for Thursday. They might let Jeff Lynne's ELO close the main that day for all we know.

Hotel already booked for 2nd weekend, got some friends coming in from Houston so we are going no matter what. Would love Dead & Co. Other than that don't care fest is fun 100% of the time regardless of lineup.
See I disagree. I don't hate Jazzfest, and I even think the lineup is always top 1 or 2 as regards talent on the entire planet. But it can get outrageously packed to the point of nuisance. Of course I will be there and having a ball, but I greatly prefer Buku and Voodoo.
For the ballers, Emerils Boudin Bourbon & Beer will be featuring St Paul & BBs who might have played last year. It's Emerl, Iron Chef Mario Batali, Donald Link and 45 other chefs. Bourbon is Buffalo Trace. I had a buddy and his wife tell me that last year was awesome. Basically all these chefs make some type of homemade sausage and you just walk around eating whatever you want. No, it doesn't compare with the top food event in the city, New Orleans Wine and Food Experience, but still. boudinbourbonandbeer.com
Also read where the Korn show on Sunday features them playing their first album in its entirety (Korn). Outside chance I could go see that, and still a chance I might hit Chuburnitall tomorrow, but there was a statewide fire ban enacted for the weekend. I don't know if/how that affects it, but if so, pwn3d
Dead & Co would be badass at JF. So I doubt it will happen. We'll get TAB'd or some shit.
Golden Dawn Arkestra playing a late night at Blue Nile on a weekend night, was told by the band directly. Def recommend hitting that one up, even though Blue Nile is a major pain in the ass during JF.

It definitely gets crowded, and parking or transportation can be a total pain in the ass, the mud can be bad and stinky, and it can be super duper hot (or unusually cold that one year!). But what jazzfest has that other I attend do not is a "vibe" (sorry) brought about by age. This thing has been happening since way before I was born, and it hasn't completely fallen prey to the machinations of the modern music festival. Sure there are big name headliners to sell tickets, but the gospel tent, blues tent, jazz tent, jazz and heritage stage, and people's health economy hall tent are always there. Lollapalooza doesn't have that shit! And though arguments can be made to the contrary no festival I've been to comes close to the quality of the food.
As I've posted before to me it marks the beginning of festival season, the beginning of summer, the end of busy season at work, the beginning of hot ass days and vacation time and Phish tour is right around the corner. So I have a bunch of personal reasons for loving it as well, as a symbol of the things to come.
My one real complaint about Jazzfest is, at least for big headliners, its outgrown the Acura field. I don't even attempt to catch the big shows, too crowded.
This was the year I was finally going to hit up JazzFest but some dumbass friends of mine decided to have their wedding on April 30th.
So is it worth it to go for the first weekend and then hang around for a couple of days the following week? Or is it a "if you can't do it all, don't do anything" type deal? Last year, it seemed like all the sweetest shit around the city (like after shows and Fiya Fest) was on the second weekend. Is the start of Jazz Fest generally a little quieter?

I would say the second weekend is kind of the crescendo, but it doesn't really matter. We did first weekend (The Who Saturday) and caught a bunch of late night shows leading into Wednesday's Oak Street Block party ending with Leftovef Salmon and Oak Street Allstars) and went Thursday to Panic. You can enjoy one weekend or another easily. My biggest bitch last year was looking at all the stuff we couldn't see that 2nd weekend since we were out of town. But it otherwise didn't affect the days we went or did something at night or wee hours.
Either weekend is fine. Your personal tastes will choose which is better.
I've had better first weekends than 2nd before. This years 2nd was wayyyyy better.
There are def more people 2nd weekend because of the extra day and the climax of the whole thing. If you go first weekend and stay a little extra go to Instrument's A Comin' at Tips on Monday night.
Right on! Thanks so much for the advice guys. Got my NOLA trip potentially lined up for the first Thursday to the Tuesday the following week. Hopefully some good shit falls in that window!!

you'll have a blast either way. "which weekend should I go to" is the most common question. I either base it on taste or as in your case, just whichever weekend I can make it.
No matter what weekend you go there will be something going on after jazzfest, its a rare night that doesn't have a great show going on somewhere. They might not all be big shows, but there is tons of good music to be found.
When in doubt, just go wherever Karl Denson is at.
NO! Damn I hate me some Bob Segar. It's the proverbial essence of the bloated carcass of lame classic rock radio (except with some talented musicians backing him for sure)

Get a load of this idiot.
Don't be going full chump on me because I don't listen to some shit the radio force fed us for like the last 40 years. If people like that, fine. I don't. Shit was boring to me. I'm not hating on the many decent musicians he had working with him, but it is in the Foghat category for me. If you don't like it, fine. But you can take your prissy fucking attitude out on someone else.
Or
You can equally try to rag harder for me not liking Joan Jett and Blackhearts, AC/DC post Back in Black and all the other crap that radio was spewing back in the late 70's/early 80's either. It's my right. We looked a little deeper. Seriously. You don't even want to have the argument.

...says the Lotus superfan.
Haha. Even Jugs jumping in now. So what if I like Lotus. But fuck some Silver Bullet dude. Seriously. By 15 we were past that stuff. It's just simplistic. I didn't like simple music. I was classically trained early, but I chose not to stick with playing. So I became a listener. And if you're going to tell me AC/DC was musically in the same league with King Crimson (which I know you didn't, but...) or that Bob Segar and the Silver Bullet Band was on par with Brand X or Gentle Giant or whatever, you would be wrong.
Why are both of you bagging on me because I don't want to see something? It's not like I'm going to boycott jazzfest because he's there. But it's certainly not a headliner I have any interest in seeing. I think I'm entitled to that right.;

Just "Turn the Page" buddy.
Is it not okay to not want a particular headliner and post about it on a message board where it came up? Why did that make you mad enough to call me an idiot?

I caught a Bob Seger two-for-Tuesday on the radio yesterday. "Turn the Page" followed by "Hollywood Nights." It was amazing. The terrorists can never win, you guys.

Fair enough. I thought you were mad since you dropped the insult. I won't take offense or grudge on that. I'm not going to go all 7 days, but I will probably pick 3 or 4. Hopefully Dead & Company will be one of the other headliners.
This set will be hotter than a thousand gumbos, you guys.
And more packed than a can of sardines. Especially since he will be on the Acura stage.
I bet he's in the John Fogerty / Robert Plant spot on Gentilly (or Samsung or whatever the fuck they decide to call it next year).
But yeah, settle the fuck down, esteban. Seger has been an ongoing joke all season in the Roo headliner thread. That being said, Imma go watch part of his set if it's on a day I'll be there.

It's all good. I didn't get it and haven't followed anything Bonnaroo this year, because I don't think I'm going back. I didn't have that much fun this year, and I'm not wild about the direction it's going. I met tons of cool people and saw some good shows, but it didn't live up to my expectations or even come close to the time we had in 2012.

Yeah, I think I'm done with all big festivals. Will do a day or 2 of Yazz w/ some late nights obviously. I'm just gonna focus on seeing rock-biker and rock-satanic music in 2016.
