They would have to actually sell individual tickets for each day, to gauge capacity each day just to even begin to think about selling out.
How do the tickets work then?
You buy single day tickets for either first weekend or second weekend. Your ticket is good for one day on whichever weekend you purchase it for. If you wanted to go Friday, Saturday, & Sunday the first weekend, you'd buy 3 first weekend tickets.
They would have to actually sell individual tickets for each day, to gauge capacity each day just to even begin to think about selling out.
How do the tickets work then?
You buy a ticket that's good anyday of that weekend. So, 1 weekend one ticket will get you in either friday, Saturday, or sunday. 1 weekend two ticket, one day either thursday, Friday, Saturday or Sunday of weekend two.
They would have to actually sell individual tickets for each day, to gauge capacity each day just to even begin to think about selling out.
How do the tickets work then?
They are good for any day that weekend. Thus if you buy 1 ticket for 2nd weekend, you can use it any day that weekend. If you buy 2 for a weekend, you could go any 2 days that weekend. I got 3 for each weekend as I will probably go 3 days 1st weekend and then skip one of the 4 days 2nd weekend.
Recent article said last year was 460,000 and the tecord in 01 was like 600 something.
They spoke of capping tickets last year as it was universally thought that 450k meant about 90+ for the biggest draw day.. with the reconfigures (all the new grandstand and VIP areas) the capacity has shrunk considerably from the early 2000's on the Acura stage. Having people lined all the way through the horse track sand without an area to move through on that stage just sucks- see below....- the only space you can see in green is the drainage ditch. Just for comparison when DMB played in 2001, it was worse by about 50k just at this stage- the entire track was covered in people and
and it was estimated that there were over 160k people for the day and over 110k just at this stage for the day (think about it, that's over 60k folks MORE than the 2nd biggest one day crowd [a Jimmy Buffett show in 90's) -- people were standing and walking on top of the portalets because it was so packed and there was nowhere to walk through at all...love DMB, but that was the WORST festival experience ever...Since then, it's been roughly 200k for first weekend and 250k for 2nd weekend....They do need to cap the days by saying, once a certain day reaches capacity (I think it should be 85k) then the rest get turned away....If they communicate the rules then everyone is playing in the same game and there are a TON of walk ups so it's not like everyone bought tickets in advance, but if you did, you just have to get there earlier.

Had myself convinced to go the Grand Marshal route, but since all my favorite acts are playing weekend two when I can't make it, there's no way I can justify that price. Don't need to be up close, just wanna groove and have a place to chill when not groovin!

This is why you have to go the long route when walking through Jazzfest. The dirt outside track and then cut through on the ramps. I will never forget being stuck on the left side of the Acura stage trying to get through before Pearl Jam. I had a panic attack and had to turn back. It was the worst 30 mins of my life. I was not the leader of the pack going through, I would never have gone that way.
BTW, they outgrew the fairgrounds in 1998 when DMB played. The festival has only gotten larger, it is ridiculous that it is still at the fairgrounds. It should be where Voodoo USED to be (same with Voodoo), the new fest grounds are too small.
EDIT: And they can say that they are going to start capping tickets all they want, but until they start selling actual individual day tickets it will never happen. There is always one day that will be more packed and they can't anticipate which day it is that with the one ticket good for the weekend bullshit.
Can't wait for the latenites to start popping up more rapidly. Def doing a Kamasi Washington show.
Would def skip Mule if something cooler was going down.
Hoping for some kinda all-star Bowie tribute show at the Saenger. Obv holding out for Ween. Maybe we'll get lucky and get that Claypool/Lennon Delirium for a late night show. Them opening for Ween for two nights would make my pants very tight.

Except for sunny day weekend headliners (e.g. Springsteen either last year or the year before) there is plenty of room with the 2011 or 2012 (?) rule forcing tarps, chairs and such 20-30 yards from the front of most stages. We got rail for Phish and Cheese in 14, and we were pretty close at Congo Square for Public Enemy. You can dance your way up, but it's almost impossible to actually get through a headliner crowd if it's mega packed except via roped off aisles. I don't know about ac bathrooms, as I've never done anything but GA at Jazzfest. Since some of the beer guys, even though it's Coors/Bud/Miller roll ice chests through the crowd, you don't have to leave a spot that often. If you make friends with some group close to one of the aisles, you can pretty much come and go as you please.

Krewe only gives you access to the grandstand on the Acura stage (stage left)... a little cover for 1/2 the day and your own beverage area...It does NOT include AC restrooms nor any free or discounted beverages-- doesn't seem worth it
Brass Pass- gives basically nothing in the form of added viewing benefits. The only thing you get is re-entry to grounds if you want to and a tent access (no views of the stages) with some veery light finger food. Must still buy all beverages- worst of all the options
Grand Marshall-- this is the best of the 3 as it includes access to the front of both the main stages and a tent area with some cover and chairs near the stages. Must be noted-- NO Beverages are included
NOTE: There are several AC bathrooms in the middles of both sides of the track and for whatever reason, these seem to be used less. You can also go inside the grandstand and there is a bathroom in there.

Was this quoted empty for a reason? I know my points are spot on, but just curious.

Breakdown of various VIP options, ranked according to increased price:
Brass Pass - Access to WWOZ tent, which has tons of fresh fruit and café au lait, as well as some clean portos. No AC but the tent is shaded and I think there are fans. No special seating privileges at all.
Krewe - Access to stands on the track at Acura stage only. No special seating at any other stage.
Grand Marshall - Access to a standing room only section at the front of the Acura stage, gentilly stage, and congo square stage. I believe also has access to some sort of VIP lounge.
Big Chief - Access to stands at acura stage (different stands than krewe, across the field and slightly closer), access to stands at gentilly stage, access to some sort of VIP lounge.
In terms of AC bathrooms, anybody can use the restrooms under the grand stand, which are air conditioned. Tends to be a line at times but never anything crazy.
For me and my budget, the only VIP option that's truly worth it is the Brass Pass, simply because it also includes a ticket for every day of the festival. I enjoy getting to the fest early, cramming in a bunch of fresh fruit and drinking delicious café au laits until i'm visibly shaking.
My friend did Grand Marshall a couple years ago and said it was fantastic, but it's hard for me to justify the cost. If I did another VIP it would be Grand Marshall though, it's the best deal out of krewe/grand marshall/big chief.
If you really think you are going to want to catch all the acura headliners, and you are positive you'll catch acura headliners instead of gentilly headliners, krewe could potentially be worth it, especially since the Acura field can become frighteningly packed with really big name headliners (think springsteen and Fleetwood mac).

first reply was an accident- was trying to reply to the person about the better passes... to your point, I tend to walk around the track also as that's normally the path of least resistence, but when the crowds are as big as they've been for Springsteen, DMB, Elton, Buffett and some others, you can't even walk around the track and it just starts backing up down the track. You can see it in the pic i posted. That is a view of the track and look how far back away from the stage the crowd on the track is. I tend to go a little early, spread out a blanket and throw a couple of chairs on it near the beer stand on the stage left near the grandstands on the grass as close to the track as possible. Then leave and come back whenever i want without having to climb over a ton of people as I'm near the edge.

I don't go to the Acura stage 90% of the times, and I would never go that way for those acts. If I was going to see someone that big at Jazzfest, I most likely would be camping all day. Usually on the right side of the stage close to the drinks and portos. I tend to stick to Congo and Gentilly stages personally. Sometimes the Jazz or Blues tent if there is someone of interest.
EDIT: Also I would wait until after the Acura main headliner would start. Once they start the track gets easier to walk though since people are pretty much in their spot, but you have to cut through the grass to the inside track (I played derby, if there is 3 inches, I will get through and mostly in the back are people that have been camping).
The only crowd I'm slightly worried about is PJ first weekend. I can't imagine Steely Dan or RHCP attracting a Bruce or Elton level crowd. Is this field during PJ going to be an impenetrable fortress? Or, like most festivals, are there weak (read: open) spots off to the side??

If you go the long way around, the outside of the track and then cut into the grass at the way back, you will be able to get in. The other option is camping out. PJ was the crowd that I had the panic attack in when I was dragged through the inner track on the left side of Acura. DON'T GO THAT WAY!
So my friend Chris Davis (King of Crawfish) is having a festival the week in between the Jazzfest weekends. Information is as follows:
ARTIST SCHEDULE
4/25: Eric Lindell, Mike Zito & The Wheel, Colin Lake, Johnny Sansone
4/26: John "Papa" Gros Band w/ special guest, Papa Mali & Friends, Billy Iuso & The Restless Natives, George Porter Trio w/ special guest June Yamagishi
4/27: The MVP (Jon Cleary, Nigel Hall, Tony Hall, Raymond Weber, & Derwin "Big D" Perkins) + The 2016 NOLA Crawfish Cook-Off with NOLA Celebrity Judges + “The Crawfish All-Stars (George Porter, Jr., Terrence Higgins, Billy Iuso, Dave Malone w/ special guest Anders Osborne)
Next up for Jazzfest; hundreds of night shows to navigate. Ugh.
Jon Cleary- easy choice.
Me and my dad are looking to go this year. He's very claustrophobic so I'm getting a little worried about hearing these stories.
You'll be fine. Gentilly and Congo stage is where it's at. If you're at Acura for a main show, setup camp and then one holds down fort, while other explores. Especially if it's a big headline day. I get panic attacks in thick crowds, only once at jazzfest ever cuz I had a ameauter leading the pack.
Unpossible. In addition to the Tarantula & Let's Get Ready mainstream stuff, he'll bust out some Unpredictable, Mind of Mystikal, & Ghetto Fabulous tracks. Usually has a pretty bas ass live band too.
