Brian Jonestown Massacre on 2nd Sunday at OEJ. May have to hit this up. We'll see. Saw Joel Gion at Levitation preparty last year and enjoyed it but wasn't blown away. Need to listen to some live shows, as this is prob the most convienent or possible only time I'll get a chance to see this band.
I like Satchmo during this period when shows are starting to come out. I feel like they get the shows posted more quickly than jazzfestgrids, the whole jazzfest run is on one page, and new additions are highlighted so I can just scroll through and easily see new shows.
In a couple months after the list starts to get populated I prefer jazzfestgrids, because the grid format is easier to read at that point. Jazzfestgrids is also great for seeing how many venues still need to book shows.
Yea I check Satchmo a few times a week all year, most useful overall nola music sight. Grids is great when you are closer to Yazzfest and everything is announced, as you can read it easier based on dates and times, plus it has prices.
I saw Pimps of Joytime were playing 4/29 at night. I don't really know them well, but they have their fans.
There was all kinds a mean nasty ugly lookin people on the bench there. There was mother rapers and father stabbers and father rapers sitting right there on the bench next to me...

Fucking Arlo's 50th Alice's Restaurant and Neil Young on the same day will be killer. That's some all time shit.
I'm still waiting to buy my Kamasi Washington ticket. Thinking I should go ahead and get one for Friday late show, as Ween is the only thing I'm really waiting on and that will def not be a late show, and I'm 100% in for fest on 2nd Sunday so I'd rather not be out till 5am and then go back out into the sun. May do the BJM show after Neil as well.

Nice. They've been on some lineups I've been at, but I don't recall ever having seen them.
I'm just hoping the 2nd Sunday schedule will work out for me. Shorty will close, so that likely puts Neil Young on beforehand on the main stage. I don't know what time that day Arlo Guthrie will play. But I seriously can't miss that. What I'm looking at for the top of the lineup is:
Friday 1: Steely Dan, Gov't Mule, Janelle Monae, Kermit Ruffins - There's a shot all 4 will be in conflict which would suck Saturday 1: Leo Nocintelli, Mystikal, Galactic, Pearl Jam - Hoping Pearl Jam and Galactic don't conflict Sunday 1: Terrence Blanchard & E Collective, Herbie Hancock, J. Cole and RHCP thinking that RHCP/Herbie/J. Cole will conflict
Thurs2: Might skip this day Friday 2: Dirty Dozen, Los Lobos, MMJ/Paul Simon/Lauryn Hill conflict Saturday 2: Big Freedia, Rebirth, Preservation Hall, Dr. John/Snoop Dogg/Beck/Stevie Wonder conflict <--- This will suck balls Sunday 2: Dumpstaphunk, Isley Breothers, Arlo Guthrie, Neil Young
So here's the deal. My dad is flying to Nashville and we're driving down to nola on the last weekend for neil. I'm sure I could look 9n the website or even in this thread but I'm just going to ask anyway. What's the deal with bringing your own lawn chairs? From the picutre on the last page it looks like you're allowed to bring your own and set them up all day?
Yeah. You can pretty much bring in any of those types of things. They have on their site size restrictions or whatever, but you can definitely bring soft, folding chairs. There is a restriction on how close you can get to the stage though. They keep chairs, tarps, etc. back about 30 yards. It gets to be a zoo, and the last Sunday will be packed unbelievably unless the weather is shitty (which I'm almost hoping for because I own a raincoat and poncho and would rather watch Neil in the rain from the front than listen and not be able to see from the back).
All of what they said, and a side note. Most people who bring chairs will setup shop and just leave them where they want to be setup at and go bounce around until it is time for that show to start. For the most part, people don't fuck with your setup area even if nobody is there. Others (like me) don't like it, but still don't fuck with the setup.

another random note, see red line above, there is a ditch roughly where the red line is, you'll either want to be in front of this or behind it. not sure how far towards the stage the ditch goes? maybe all the way up, I've never been up that close.
to give you an idea of how thick the crowd gets, above is the crowd for Bruce a couple years back, taken from the back of the track. And I think this might have been earlier in the day, because the track was a goddamn nightmare an hour before Bruce came on. Crowding was similar for Fleetwood Mac.
Typically Sunday is LESS crowded at the Acura stage. Not sure how the crowd for Neil Young will be though.
Bottom line as has already been said get there early and setup your chairs.
Joe Russo's Almost Dead at the Joy second Friday & Saturday. Jeff Chimenti will be sitting in for Marco Benevento, who apparently "has a super incredible opportunity that weekend" and won't be there.
^^ I'm more interested in the "super incredibly opportunity" I do want to see JRAD, but the fanboydom behind that band is out of control right now, and Voodoo Dead was a waste of time the first night last year because of the hype and overselling at Republic.
It was hard to enjoy it bc it was so damn crowded. I was upstairs where I had a little room and was dodging spinning dreadlocks all night.

So you are only going to be here for all of Sunday? And spending it at Jazzfest? Or is that for a week?
Only all of Sunday. My dad has never seen Neil Young so this is really why we're doing it. $70 for Neil Young is too good of a price to pass up for him. He's a Principal and it's extremely hard for him to take personal time (he also doesn't like to) so the fact that he's taking off two days was very surprising to me. I didn't think I was going to be able to convince him but my mom helped. I really can't explain how excited I am. I not only get to see my dad who I only see a few times a year, but we're road tripping from Nashville to New Orleans for a weekend and seeing Neil Fucking Young!

Well I am excited for both of you. Going to be a good time. If you were here longer I would offer you passes to do stuff.

That's pretty cool. Just know that there are so many people in town for both weekends, that dining can be a bit of a challenge - also you're in on Sunday when some restaurants are closed. There will be plenty to eat at the festival on Sunday, but you won't want to wait until 2pm when the lines can get unbearable.

Has he ever done Jazziest before, and where is he coming from to meet you in Nashville?

He's never even been to New Orleans. He's coming from our hometown Jamestown, NY but most likely flying out of Buffalo.
