I am so goddamn torn on what to do late-night. "The Heat" is looking awfully tempting 1st Saturday. Lettuce on 1st Sunday also lookin' real nice. But when do I fit in a Preservation Hall show?!? Don't know if I could live with myself going to NOLA and not stopping for a night at the Hall. Guess I could do two after-shows in one night if these PHJB shows don't start till midnight. Choices, choices....
You could get to 3 shows in a night since some are 7/8, some are 10-12 and some are 2am. We usually hit a couple. Only ticket I have is Ragefest at the moment which is Th 2nd week. I'm probably gonna see Cypress Hill 1st Sat. If there is a big name you see add a show (there is a fuckton more to go) you might want to get tix as many of the big shows sell out. Shorty and Galactic will both have 2am shows either week, Mule will probably play, MMJ might as well though they probably play PH. Joe Russo's shows are sold out as well as a few others.
I got luva wanting to do that too, when she's here. There's just so much this year..
@estaben I got for Kurt vile Sunday before, I'm getting joy formidable, thao is now out and I have duran duran. I haven't bought anything for week 2 yet.

Man, I think those Axial Tilt shows at Cafe Istanbul may be the best Dead tribute thing going over the two weekends. Although Steve Kimock with Voodoo Dead is cool. Still can't make up my mind on what to do otherwise, so many of the superjam-type lineups kind of overlap.
That would be cool. I love that they included all that on the FTW box set.
I haven't heard any axial tilt tapes, I'll have to look around. I went ahead and got a ticket for Saturday. Cafe Istanbul is tiny. Also got a second weekend ticket in hand which I'm planning on using for Sunday.

I won't be heartbroken if I can't, PorchRadio and I plan on a return when there is NOT a music festival going on to do the local life in the near future. We can always go then

Garage A Trois would be a great choice, can't go wrong there.
I'm still holding out on tickets. I plan on doing Fest on first Saturday and second Sunday. May do second Saturday since my girl hasn't seen a lot of the big names on that day (including Dr. John, which is unacceptable)
Still waiting for grids to fill out before I pick a Kamasi Washington show. Leaning towards 2am Friday heavily.
May show up and scalp a ticket for JRAD since I haven't seen them yet. We'll see. Last year was a lot of can't miss shows for me, this year I'm just not as interested.

Yeah, there is a lot to still be released - probably some fairly big names too. I'm only in for Ragefest at this point as I'm not missing that. I'm probably going to Cypress Hill if it doesn't sell out to their fan club. Other than that, I'm just playing by ear with too much going on between now and then to worry a whole lot about it.

Should be. Looking at some of the bigger venues, it looks like these are the dates left open for shows:
-House of Blues hasn't announced anything for 1st Saturday, Thursday, or 2nd Friday -Tipitina's usually has early and late shows every night if I remember correctly. They've got early spots open 2nd Friday & Sunday and late spots open 1st Friday & Sunday and 2nd Saturday & Sunday. -Republic has 1st Friday & Saturday open. This is another place that runs two shows a night a lot of times. -One Eyed Jack's has 1st Friday open. -Nothing announced at Howlin' Wolf for 2nd Sunday. -The Civic has only announced Jon Batiste & Stay Human on 2nd Saturday, so they've got basically all of Fest open. -The Saenger has 1st Friday & Sunday and all of 2nd weekend still free. -The Joy doesn't have anything announced yet for 1st Saturday or 2nd Sunday. -Mahalia Jackson doesn't have anything announced, but I don't know what's going on with that place. -Orpheum's for 1st Sunday and 2nd Friday & Sunday still open.
I'm with sarge in that I haven't been all that interested in what's announced so far. But damn that's still somewhere in the neighborhood of 25 shows, some probably major, to be announced just in these venues.
I was watching Scarface this weekend and about busted out laughing 10 times at Mang. Haha. Also wondering if they're going to do the Wednesday Oak Street Block Party free shows. That shit was crucial last year even though we only got a few hours in (Kung Fu, The Heard, Leftover Salmon, Sonic Bloom, Oak Street Allstars (Lettuce, Krasno, etc.). It was bad ass for free.
I'm thinking about skipping Jazzfest all together. Catching that show and then driving straight to Austin for Levitation. That's really the only fest lineup within a reasonable driving distance that I like this year.
My girl and I agreed we have to see FunkiFIYA if they played Jazzfest after seeing them at Krewe of Boo ball with a limpdick'd crowd. Looks like I'll be at Fiya > Megalomaniacs
Prob drive back Thurs morning work some, work Fri then come back. Would love to ride to Levitation too but I will end up spending more on posters than I will during the weekend at Jazzfest hahahaha
I was aiming for the 1st Saturday but it looks like those are all sold out, so I locked in for the Sunday. Too bad, because there's a lot going on Sunday, but I'm sure some more shit will continue to pop up all weekend!
Whats the deal with zero shows at the Saenger so far? Surely they have something in the works?
I expected a massively overpriced tribute concert to Allen Toussaint and a Mule show by now.
Saw on PT someone say that JF performers that are not local cannot do outside shows unless for charity. Maybe that means an off year for Mule late night. Last year was def a step down from the previous two years, although still a solid show. That first Saenger return show was outrageous.
DEF has to be a Blackbird/Don Was Toussaint tribute show in the works. I'm just kinda like, "do I even want to drop the coin to go to that?'
I didn't lose any sleep skipping the Neville's show. The Dr. John tribute was far and away the overall highlight of JF that year though.
Still lots of shows to be added but things are mostly formulaic/uninspired this year.
The Civic has not announced shit either, which is who I'm looking at as they have been killing it the past year with Bowery.

Yeah the Mule show last year was a let down for me. Made me realize that I love Warren, and I love seeing him play songs I love, but I just don't love a lot of original Mule tunes. The year before was of course spectacular.
Lots of shows that will be a good time but I agree nothing particularly inspiring. Still the coolest sounding show by far is Kamasi at OEJ, definitely still want to make one of those. "Standard fare" kind of shows but first weekend I could catch all the shows Vulfpeck is opening for and be happy: Greyboy > The Revivalists > Lettuce, but I wasn't really planning on going first weekend.
The Civic did book Jon Batiste & Stay Human one of the weekends. Odd booking I thought. Tickets are cheap ($25) but can they really fill a theater? Maybe they are counting on that Colbert recognition to sell tickets.
Have you decided on a Kamasi show yet? Feel like I may go to the early Friday show then stick around and try to get into the late show if I'm feeling really into it.
Haven't bought any tickets whatsoever to anything yet.
Rough plan so far: 1st weekend Fri night- LoS @ OEJ early & late Sat- Fest > ? Sun- Maybe drive home or dick around till Duran Duran /Chic
2nd Weekend Weds- Fiya > Deaner Thurs- Go home and work Fri- Kamasi? Sat- ?? Sun- Fest > home
Def a relief to not have out of control FOMO as I can't afford that shit this year. Cutting back on shows heavily this year.
NOTE: Just looked at the grids... Thurs before 1set weekend has The Darkness @ HOB. Kind of interested! Really liked their first album when it came out, then they had that great Siouxsie cover. Quit paying attention after that, don't know if they'd be worth it live.
First Saturday @ HOB @ midnight.......Foundations of Funk. May have to do this, the NYE show was awesome. I will see Zig every change possible, he sets me off even more than George does.
Aight, after checking the grids I'm thinking 2nd Friday I'll be very well rested and fed and hit up Kamasi early show then go to JRAD and score a ticket outside.
