I have zero plans so far, other than a hotel booked 2nd weekend. Don't even have jazzfest tickets yet. Been slow to buy night show tickets because we are meeting some friends from Houston and need to coordinate with them.

Yeah, I'm not on anything yet. I'm probably going to do Cypress Hill at Tips on the first Saturday. I like Turkuraz/Galactic first Friday, but I'm probably not going to go to that. I also like Dumpstaphunk's Funk, Power and Soul featuring Nth Power and London Souls, but I've seen Dumpstaphunk and Nth Power enough times already. And, haha, no f'n way in hell I'll be at The Darkness on the first Thursday. I can't stand them but I do understand the appeal.
Second weekend is also still almost a complete mystery to me as to what I'm going to do. I have Ragefest tickets for the first Thursday (might have otherwise gone to Heavy Pets Beatles Tribute). Saturday I'm leaning toward The Motet & Pimps of Joytime, but I haven't started looking at tickets for any of this yet other than Lettuce/Break Science which I have (Ragefest).
Then again, I gotta get through Buku and Euphoria before I catch that Jazz Fest itch.
We're doing the April 30th Axial Tilt show at Cafe Istanbul and May 1st at the Fest. I'm hoping Neil gets that 3:30ish-5ish Acura slot before Trombone Shorty closing and Arlo Guthrie closes Gentilly or Fais Do Do. Bonnie Raitt could close either Gentilly or Blues Tent. The B.B. King Tribute could close the Blues Tent though. Last Sunday's scheduling is always hard to figure out since you know Shorty is closing Acura and Maze & Frankie Beverly is closing Congo Square. Other than Neil & Arlo, top priority is Heads of State, who I'm hoping get 2ish - 3ish in the Jazz Tent. I'm assuming Chris Botti would close that. Would like to fit Punch Brothers in there somewhere, but I've seen them a lot so it wouldn't be the end of the world. But Zigaboo's Funk Revue, Heads of State, Punch Brothers, Neil Young, & Arlo Guthrie would be a solid day.
Might end up picking up a first weekend ticket for Friday or Sunday (really want to go Saturday, but I'll be out of town) or another 2nd weekend one for Friday. Maybe Nolatet at Gasa Gasa on 4/26 and/or Luther Dickinson/Alvin Youngblood Hart at Chickie Wah Wah on 4/27. Gotta wait until the Civic and the Saenger round out their lineups to decide on any other weekend shows but for now eyeing one of the early Kamasi Washington shows, Howlin' Wolf's second weekend lineup, and/or maybe Voodo Dead since Steve Kimock's playing. I didn't remember him being in that lineup last year but he was.
Voodoo Dead was a snoozefest last year and Billy and Schools ain't even in the band now. Can't go wrong with Gp JR but part of the allure of that show for me was seeing Billy and Schools together.
Speaking of Billy, one thing that hasn't been brought up is that Billy & the Kids are playing Wanee the weekend before Yazzfest, maybe they are going to do a gig at the Civic?
2nd Sunday looks so good, didn't even notice Zig on there till you mentioned it. That is gonna be a great day for sure. Where would he play? Hopefully the Heritage stage (is that the name? the smaller one across the track from the Gospel Tent)
Anyone have experience with one-off superjams with any of the following talent? Considering "The Heat" (with Krasno, Burbridge, Ivan Neville and Stanton Moore) and also the GPJ/Foundation of Funk jams, but are they gonna be noodle fests? Or will they just jam on some grooves/covers? I got no problem with noodlin' jams, but I have a feeling my girlfriend's patience may be tried if they play like two songs over 90 minutes. I've seen GPJ sets of both varieties -- one where the band is pretty tight and they do some great covers to boogie to, and one where the guys could just not get on the same page and they just laid one barely-passable groove for 40 minutes.
Good question, one I've thought about a lot with these different little groups of mostly the same folks. I pretty sure esteban & Blotter have been to some of these in the past. A few of the groups (specifically I remember Foundations of Funk, Worship My Organ, & Frequinox) have played multiple consecutive years around Jazz Fest time or other shows so them playing together won't be totally brand new. I don't remember The Heat from before, but Oteil has played with Ivan, who has a side band w/Stanton (Dragon Smoke), & Krasno at Bear Creek probably multiple times. I'd imagine they'll have a few songs they'll cover, but there will definitely be some noodling.
Agreed, it will be mixed. You're not getting 90 minute songs, but you might get some 15-20 grooves. Bear Creek was all over this type of superjam format, and the year we went, included a lot of these people.
A bonus IMO. But that sucks it was boring. Given the price and already seeing a Dead tribute that weekend, I'd probably skip.
I could see Zig playing early Acura or Congo but yeah Heritage Stage would be best.
No Billy in a Dead cover band is a bonus? lolwat
I've got all the love in the world for George but I saw 7 Walkers like 6x, seeing Schools was cool, especially after seeing him play great with Mickey in 2012.

Foundations of Funk on NYE had a lot of 15-20 mins stuff going on.
I mean, anything Meters related is going to have 'noodling' (I wouldn't consider that kind of shred noodling, Umphrey's is a textbook def of noodling in my book).
I don't think any girlfriends out there wouldn't be super into a show with Zigaboo playing, that dude just sets it off more than anyone else I can think of off the top of my head.
Billy's just mailing it in, so lazy. He's a better drummer than the output I've seen the last few years. No touch on the cymbals, multiple consecutive measures of downbeat crashes, just all over the place. I can't take it. Other than nostalgia, he and Mickey do nothing for me.

Mickey Hart looks exactly like my father in law.
Does he wear soccer goalie gloves while drumming exclusively with felt mallets and/or hot rods? He could be your father-in-law, man.
lol Didn't know you played drums, Jabco. I love seeing Billy personally, and finally seeing him and Mickey together in Chicago last summer was one of the all time greatest experiences for me as someone who's been playing over 15 years.
So, Marco is playing with The Arcs on tour. That is the 'huge opportunity'. Talk about underwhelming. Arcs played with 2/3rds of the James Gang in Nashville last night, that's pretty cool.
Would love to see that James Gang reunion tour Walsh talked about a couple of years ago. Seems like a great time to do it since Frey is dead now.
Verrrrrrry tempted by this James Booker tribute night with Marco Benevento!
Damn. Gravity A late show on the 23rd. I don't think I've seen them since Waka last year. Also Break Science live band and then Adam Deitch's birthday party all look good to me and are possibilities.
Went ahead and got Cypress Hill tix for Saturday 4/23. The 25th Anniversary tour should be smoking. This means I'll probably go see Gravity A late show that night even though it's across town.
Just announced for 4/23 at Republic is the London Souls Revue, featuring Eric Krasno, Ian Neville and Cyrill Neville performing songs by Allen Toussaint, The Beatles and more.
SO IN FOR THIS! That's the kinda spicy treat I was looking for!
Ghostland and Michael Menert @ Joy 4/23. Got Cypress Hill tickets but might try to make this after around 1130 or so. Menert is great. I haven't seen Ghostland yet.
Besides the Smashing Pumpkins set on the 22nd that VieuxCareen posted about, they now list a ska show, English Beat with Ska Face. I never much listened to ska, but I do respect the English Beat (Carver Theatre 2nd Friday).
Also Jen Hartswick Band will be playing a 3am show at Maple Leaf 2nd Friday. That's even a late start for me. Quintron is doing his Weather Warlock thing at Zeitgeist Theatre on the last Sunday. That's some contraption he invented that makes sounds based on temperature, humidity, pressure, etc.

Has Trombone Shorty's Treme Threauxdown been posted on first Saturday Saenger for a while now? I'm just noticing it. So with Smashing Pumpkins first weekend Saenger is booked. Still nothing second weekend.

Yea, def not doing that Pumpkins show. If it wasn't during Yazzfest I'd prob check it out. Would be cool to hear SP songs from the balcony, which reminds me of the Melloncollie artwork.
Wtf is Civic Theater doing? Their cheesedicking is cockblocking my purchase of tickets. I like their booking too much all year to buy other shit before they announce.
I did get my Fiya and Megalomaniac tickets though.

I heard that Smashing Pumpkins sucked at Champion Square last year, but that is the word from several people I know that were.
I wish I knew what the Civic was doing. It is crazy they haven't announced anything.
Michael Franti & Spearhead 4/22 @ Republic I won't be at that.
This, x1000.
Pumpkins were great last summer, I thought at least. Didn't play too much new shit, played a few deeper cuts. Jimmy Chamberlin was on drums. Don't know what people were expecting. There was a 10-15 minute Through The Eyes of Ruby, that should make anyone happy.
