Agreed. I didn't have a prior frame of reference but I liked them. As for Franti, no hate. But it's like Nahko. Once you've seen them twice there isn't much left to see imho.
So just saw a rumor on PT saying that on 2nd weekend at the Saenger there is gonna be some huge Last Waltz show. Assuming this is a Blackbird/Don Was gig. They said it might be two nights? NOLA band with tons of special guests
May or may not do this, never been that big into The Band.

It is looking like I might finally make it down for my first Jazz Fest. if so, I'll only be able to make it for the first weekend since Levitation is during the second. It's still killing me that I'm missing Neil and Stevie, plus most of the undercard acts I'm wanting to see. I'll probably get into town too late Friday for Steely Dan, but at least I should be able to see Van The Man if I make it to the actual fest on Saturday. What I'm really looking forward to is the night life, So far I'm eyeing late nights on Friday of Greyboy, Vulfpeck, and Pimps of Joytime @ Joy Theater, Louisiana Blues Throwdown @ Little Gem Saloon, Skerik, Marco Benevento, Johnny Vidacovich, and Oteil @ Maple Leaf, maybe Galactic @ Tipitina's or Dumpsta @ Howlin' Wolf. I'd love to be going to that sold out Meters show. Saturday night, I'm looking at Foundation of Funk @ House of Blues, Dead Feat @ Howlin' Wolf, The Heat @ One Eyed Jacks, or Garage A Trois @ Tipitina's. I'd be open to Revivalist and Vulfpeck @ Orpheum and that Toussaint tribute @ Republic. Should be a good time. I'd love to be able to make a full week out of it one day.

I'm right with ya -- have to leave town mere days before the second weekend, when two of my favorite bands of all-time are playing, and it's eating me inside. But my outta-control excitement to visit New Orleans for the first time is sure soothing the pain. The city itself combined with the after-shows should make this trip from Toronto well worth it -- any joy experienced at JazzFest itself will be a total bonus! ONE MONTH AWAY! Can't wait!
Also, if anyone still has to buy tickets, I highly suggest keeping an eye on StubHub. Tickets welllllllll under face value keep poppin' up, but they sell fast. I just snagged a one-day ticket to the first weekend for $38 -- almost half price. Even if it turns out not to be legit, StubHub will make it right and provide a legit ticket. There are weekend one FULL WEEKEND PASSES going for $80 right now. That's insane savings. A Krewe VIP weekend pass sold for almost $200 under face the other day. Worth monitoring!

there's a lot of good night shows first weekend. The following get my attention:
Foundations of Funk (Zigaboo, GPJ, Ivan Neville, Tony Hall - HOB - Saturday Late
Greyboy / Vulfpeck / Pimps of Joytime - Joy - Friday Early
The Heat (Ivan Neville / Oteil / Stanton / Krasno) - OEJ - Saturday Early
The Revivalists / Vulfpeck - Orpheum - Saturday Early
London Souls Revue (Toussaint Tribute - Krasno / Cyril / Ian Neville) - Republic - Saturday Late
Trombone Shorty - Saenger - Saturday Early
Cypress Hill - Tips Uptown - Saturday Early
Garage A Trois - Tips Uptown - Saturday Late
when I look at it there is a ton going on Saturday.
going to wherever GPJ or Stanton Moore is is never a bad idea.
I've got 3 and 3. So it looks like for the fest itself:
Friday (depending on arrival): Hot 8 Brass Band, Break > Jason Marsalis > Kermit Ruffins > Guitar Masters featuring John Rankin, Jimmy Robinson, Cranston Clements > Steely Dan (with a short trip to Gov't Mule)
Saturday (depending on arrival): Nigel Hall > Leo Nocenetlli/Joe Krown Trio > Big Sam's Funky Nation > Anders Osborne > Galactic > Mystikal > Pearl Jam featuring a > 2 hour set (then night shows of Cypress Hill & Ghostland Observatory) Best day for me though acknowledging that I will have to miss DeJohnette/Coltrane/Harrison
Sunday: Henry Butler & Jambalaya > Royal Teeth > Herbie Hancock/Wayne Shorter Duo > Red Hot Chili Peppers (with a slip out to catch some of J. Cole)
Thursday: Colin Lake > Higher Heights Reggae/George Porter's Runnin Pardners > New Birth Brass Band > Cyril Neville & Swampfunk/Gary Clark Jr. > Snarky Puppy (with a look at Elvis Costello) <--- Day I'm most likely to skip
Friday: Mississippi Rail Company > Bonerama > Shamar Allen & The Underdawgs > Dirty Dozen Brass Band > Pres Hall Brass > BIG BREAK > Paul Simon/My Morning Jacket/Ms. Lauren Hill <--- Would be the second most likely day to skip
Saturday: James Rivers Movement/Soul Rebels > Royal Southern Brotherhood > Preservation Hall Jazz Band > Big Freedia > Dr. John & The Night Trippers > Rebirth Brass Band > Stevie Wonder/Beck/Snoop Dog/Buddy Guy Conflict (Worst of the festival IMHO)
Sunday: Brass-A-Holics > Zigaboo Modeliste's Funk Revue > Stooges Brass Band/Trumpet Mafia > Dumpstaphunk with Art Neville > Tin Men > Neil Young & Promise of the Real > Arlo Guthrie's 50th Anniversary of Alice's Restaurant

I'm considering this, but I'm having trouble understanding how to research the after shows. Is there an organized collection of all the shows somewhere? Or do I need to check with all of the venues and put it together?

There's one out there that Blotter & Postjack know of. I usually go to www.jazzfestgrids.com It's easy enough to navigate.

feel free to post here if you have any questions about certain venues/shows. if you are considering a show we can give you a pretty good idea if the show will be uncomfortably packed or if the venue sucks.
Still torn between PJ and Van, but if I saw Mystikal, do I have any shot of seeing PJ? When one set ends, the other begins, and I've heard horror stories about headliners on Acura -- as in, if you haven't been planted there for hours, there's pretty much no way to penetrate that crowd.

Good question, and one that isn't easy to answer with certainty.
First, Mystikal is playing the Congo Square stage, which is very close to the back of the Acura field, so it will be easy to walk from Mystikal to Pearl Jam.
Second, yes there have been times the Acura field is impossible. The two recentish shows that I was at that were impossible were Springsteen and Fleetwood Mac. Track was completely packed, field was completely packed, totally impossible if you weren't already parked somewhere.
But then shows like Phish and Arcade Fire, while plenty packed, were definitely not impossible. For Phish we were on the other side of the "ditch" in the back of the Acura field and there was still spaces available behind us. For Arcade Fire we actually walked up right before the show and found some space in front of the Big Chief stands.
So the guessing game is where does Pearl Jam's popularity fit into all of this? Personally I don't think they approach the popularity level of Springsteen or Fleetwood Mac, at least not for the Jazzfest crowd. I could be totally wrong but I think you could leave from Mystikal and get a spot in the field for Pearl Jam. It won't be a good spot but it will be a spot. I hope I'm right, I tend to be too optimistic about things like this sometimes.
Are you going alone? You could bring some chairs and setup camp in Acura at the beginning of the day. Would be good if you have someone willing to stay at camp but even if you left I think people generally won't mess with your chairs, as long as you don't setup annoyingly close. And Acura that is pretty awesome all day. Nigel Hall > Leo Nocentelli > Anders > Galactic > Pearl Jam is a great day of music.

I agree with Postjack. It's going to be unknown until the day of. One improvement at Jazz Fest a couple of years ago is that anyone wanting to put up chairs and blankets is pushed back about 30 yards from the stage. I actually walked right up to the rail for Cheese (but that was a Thursday) and also right up to the rail for Phish (which was a Saturday). Obviously there was no shot at getting close for The Who, but I had some people at the front of the sit down area and was able to just post up with them. Pearl Jam is big here, but it's not likely going to be 50,000-60,000 people big with Van Morrison and Maxwell in opposition. I think a lot of the old crusty tie-dyed people will probably be at Van Morrison.
You may or may not be able to work your way toward the front and may have to sort of play it off the side right (facing) back by the track, but I don't think it's going to be a big problem. We actually walked from Juvenile/Mannie Fresh right back to The Who on Saturday last year. Juvenile was packed as well, but it was a non-issue since we had friends with a spot. I doubt that PJ will be as packed as The Who was, but you never know. That's a solid day at the main stage anyway if you were solo and just looking to post up your own spot.
Bleachers at the back of Acura and expanded "no-chair" zones!
I think this is actually really smart. The bleachers will be great for people who just want to sit down and see an act, even if it's way in the back, but they'll serve a double purpose of making setting up chairs on the track worthless since the bleachers will block the view. So no one really has to enforce the no chairs on the track rule. I guess there will still be certain areas of the track where it will have to be enforced but in the back was the worst part.
Expanding the standing room only area is smart as well.
Wondering how quickly those bleachers will fill up. They are way in the back but if they go up high enough you could potentially get pretty good sound from back there.
So I am officially out the second weekend of Jazzfest. We are now going to Austin to meet up with our new friends, SSPU at Stubbs on May 1. They gave us VIP access, whatever that means. It was a hard call, but I have seen most of the bands playing second weekend, so making the trip to Austin during Levitation seemed to be the right call (and we'll get to hang out with Silversun again!). Luckily, I didn't buy that brass pass yet or any weekend two after shows. I am now just buying Friday-Sunday and then driving out to Austin on the Thursday I already requested off, coming home on that Monday. Hopefully my girl won't be traveling to New Orleans for Jazzfest, otherwise I might have to suggest that we do a house swap for the weekend.
Vieux, you will have a great time. It sucks that it has to be a choice between Yazzing and psyching. Last year was a fuckin' miracle that it was the weekend after Yazz.
Personally, I had more fun at Levitation last year than I've ever had at Yazzfest. You can't compare the two at all, and living in NOLA during JF has to be a xtra awesome, but Levitation is just a more intense experience overall. You'll miss the food more than anything probably.
Presale code is NOLA and it is active right now! Shit I read said tomorrow so get on it asap if you want cheap tickets.
The company putting this show on knows wtf they are doing. The Dr. John tribute was unreal in 2014, and this one will be pretty balls out as well! Don't sleep on this!

you sir, are the man. thank you so much for the heads up, just snagged some front row balcony seats for my whole crew. hope they are down to go, didn't want to take the time to consult with them.
No problem breaux! Front balcony will be tight. I got the last row left aisle seats, before the super nosebleed section so I can have dance space in the aisle and not have dildos yelling at me to sit down behind me.
Front row balcony is hard to pass up on, I'm sure your friends are down. As the guest list starts to come out people on the ropes will jump on it. Would be really surprised if Neil wasn't there.

that's smart. at the saenger I like those balcony seats to the far left or right, where the rows are only two seats. I bought the two front row and two right behind it on the left side.
we had major issues with people yelling at us to sit down at mule last year. dude was real real drunk and his wife wasn't that much better. dude ended up SCREAMING at my friend, shrieking like a goddamn toddler. eventually they just left, I figured he was way too drunk to make it through the show anyway.
anyway my brain is going crazy with the sit-in possibilities but I'm trying to keep my expectations in check. even if it was just the announced artists it'll still be a dope show.
Who are you kidding, you know Neil is gonna show up. =)
I checked out those balcony seats you got, didn't want to spent $150+ rapefees on that, although it would be worth it.
Longinus and I had some totally wasted dude in front of us at that Saenger return Mule show. That guy sucked so bad, he made it two songs into Mule and his wife had to get him out. Must suck to be such a lightweight in your late 40's.
