Aya Takazawa of Japan at Jazz Tent. Fuck yeah. Hearting some Japan. Our city has such a bad ass connection with them that 90% of the people here have no idea about. But Japan loves them some Jazz. 78-80 degrees, mostly sunny and about a 15 mile per hour breeze of rain cooled air from last night. Haha.
Edit. Grace Potter did a nice acoustic When Doves Cry. Guitar Masters owning the day. They are bringing out Helen Gilet in a few.
So some fd up s about Jazz Fest is the closing conflicts. Had to leave Mule after like 10 minutes and went to Janelle Monae for another 10. Both were awesome. Then I walk to main stage for Steely Dan. So far Aja, Black Friday and Hey 19. Damn. Goodness.
Recap from yesterday is that Steely Dan was outstanding. The live backing band was just fucking great. Guitar Masters was also very excellent. Jimmy Robinson in particular was top notch as always. I'm feeling slightly wrecked and a little sun sapped, and there is no cloud in the sky today. I'll be reapplying fucking suntan lotion all day.
Today should be great. Any day I see Pearl Jam is already great and potentially a best show of the year. 2 and a half hours = extra great.
So my day is looking like:
Stop at lawyer cousin's house for crawfish and bourbon head start. This will most likely mean missing Nigel Hall. Otherwise it's mostly main stage for me. Leo Nocentelli, Anders Osborne, Galactic, Mystikal, Pearl Jam at the fest. Then Cypress Hill 25th Anniversary show at Tipitinas.
After that it gets hazy. I was wanting to also go to Ghostland Observatory with Michal Menert and the Pretty Fantastics However, I'll go to the Pretty Lights secret set if it goes down. I'll be waiting on that news all day. Menert posted a really cool Instagram photo of first meal in NOLA on this trip. I don't even know what it is, but it looks good. Updates to come...
How is the main stage field? Looking at the map, standing room in front of the stage seems bigger than in past years. Is it true.
Hard to say, but it seemed like there was more room. We went to my cousin's crawfish boil and drank a bunch of Pappy, Monsoons, etc. got in for the second half of Anders. He rocked as always. Next was an outrageous set from Galactic. They brought out The House Man (didn't know he was still around), Chali 2Na, and Erica Falls. Set was too good to be somewhat under appreciated. Highlights were Heart of Steel and Dollar Dollar Bill. Next we went to Mystikal for about 20 minutes, and he was great. Next was Pearl Jam which was fn awesome. It was a random set they dug pretty deep into the catelog and also paid some tribute to New Orleans. They brought out Chad from Red Hot Chili Peppers to play the encore which was The Real Me by The Who and Neil Young's Keep on Rocking in the Free World. Also Skerik jammed with them around that part. But they almost have me convinced to go to Bonnaroo. Biggest bitch was the set ended about 10-15 minutes early. Came home to recharge and went out to Tip's for a raucous Cypress Hill 25th Anniversary show. My daughter grabbed me near the end of that, and we went and hit Ghostland to close out the night. I'm pretty beat down and sun sapped again, so I'm probably going to just chill back til mid Afternoon and get down to the Fair Grounds for the Hanrooster/Shorter duo and Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Edit. setlist.fm has the list:

Also got word that the OG Garage A Trois show was great.
Fri just did latenight, did both Leftover shows at OEJ. Decent size crowd, had plenty of space. Early show was really good, they covered Prince's Seven. Second show opener was Walter Wolfman Washington, and he fucking killed it. Blew my load with his show and couldn't get into the 2nd LoS show as much as the first. Had friends tell me I blew it by not going to the Orpheum for the Meters. I had a blast but they're prob right.
Fest Saturday was excellent. Got in early and saw Leo Nocentelli's set, which was excellent. He had Bernie Worell come out late in the set for Flashlight and then a Meters/Pfunk medley.
Anders was good but fairly reserved. He's been a little too mellow for my tastes lately. Galactic after that was a lot of fun, crowd wasn't terrible yet. Standard set, but still good. As Esteban said the Houseman came out which was def the highlight.
Left to check out Jack Dejohnette's group, which was really good but way too ambient to keep me going but the misted tent was a nice break from the sun.
Went back for Pearl Jam who's crowd was massive and stayed for like an 75 mins. My girl was bored so we split and got some shade near Maxwell and heard him tease Let's Go Crazy and When Doves Cry. The skywriter started spelling Prince out right as this happened, pretty cool.
Went to Van Morrison last and enjoyed him from the back. Wish we had gone back by Pearl Jam and saw that great looking encore but we were faded from the sun and wanted to get out a few minutes ahead of the crowds. No that I see they ended early that is pretty frustrating since we could have easily walked up and caught it! Oh well. The shakedown on Lopez Street was going pretty hard, got the bootleg tiedye with the ripoff of the Congo Square BB King poster on it.
Word. Stopped atBlue Oak BBQ on the walk. Big mistake. Food was outrageous but I am as tired as a fn surgery patient. Ugh. Listened to some Herlin Riley Quintet. Watching some of Voice of the Wetlands and about to drag my ass to Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter. Damn, did I say I was beat the fuck down? Sunshine.
Day finishes off with40 minutes of the Hancock/Shorter duo. 2/5 of the Miles Davis Quintet (one of em anyway). So we go back to see the RHCP. It's now on the level of packed between about Fleetwood Mack and Springsteen (chairs weren't on the track but people were). Chill Peppers played the shit out of every song they played. It wasn't my ideal setlist by 10,000 miles. But I appreciated the effort and was proud to be there. They played mostly newer era stuff, but they turned in an outrageously good version of Aeroplane. They got in the other usual shit including Under the Bridge and Suck My Kiss. For the encore, and yeah I'm a homeboy, but they brought out Ivan Neville and George Porter Jr (and I think Zigaboo) and played part of what i think was a meters song and then an 11 or 12 minute version of Give it Away. Absolutely a great and appreciated performance. Everyone wants to hate on the Chilli Peppers, and I do too, but this was inspired. I don't know if it was just Jazz Fest/NOLA but they left it all on the stage. I'd almost recommend seeing them if they come to your area and if this is the way shit is going to be say as opposed to 2012.
We got a few minutes of J Cole in as well. More on that later.
Yea, I really regret skipping Voodoo '06 (Did '02-'03 then skipped '04 because lazy, '05 because Katrina fucked the ticket situation up, and '06 because I was living with a succubus) and seeing RHCP have the entire Meters come out (OG Meters reunion that year, first in a lonnnng time). I barely knew who The Meters were back then and now they are a top 10 all time fav band.
That was my first festival headlining set (late bloomer ) and the Chili Peppers will never outdo themselves on that one IMO. Also saw people bitching about Pearl Jam ending 20 minutes early; they did that in 2010 or '11 or whatever it was at Jazz Fest too for whatever reason. Still got probably 25 songs though.
May do something during the week depending on how my schedule shakes out. Got Axial Tilt Saturday and still looking at just hitting Sunday for the fest. Zigaboo - Trumpet Mafia - Aaron Neville - Wolfman - Allen Toussaint tribute - Neil Young - Heads of State - Arlo Guthrie
I like pleasure spiked with pain, and music is my aeroplane...
Great headliner sets all weekend between Steely Dan, Pearl Jam and Red Hot Chili Peppers. As noted above, we did duck out for a little while to catch some of J. Cole. He had the crowd going pretty good (we were in the back), and it was a giant crowd though nothing like the Red Hots. I was thinking maybe 80-85k yesterday? We also caught the end of J. Cole after the RHCP ended (which was also a bit early for the available time). It was sort of R&B, love one another, unity stuff. Clearly the crowd was responsive and enjoyed the set. I'll try to catch him in the future. From the back, it looked like he had 2 DJ's, a drummer a bass player and some backing vocalists. Cool show, but with the Chili Peppers playing as well as they did, it was harder to stay away from that.
I talked to some old dudes in the neighborhood that were disappointed by Van Morrison on Saturday. I was at Pearl Jam. \m/
Food this weekend included a roast beef from Dimartino's, shrimp and grits from Fireman Mike and a Yakiniku poboy from Asian Kajuns. The Yakiniku was actually only average this time. Bread was great and pickled veggies, sesame seeds, sriracha and all were great. But the pieces I got were a little gristly. Hard to say who tops the weekend, but I'd give it (based on fun and quality of the set):
Pearl Jam Red Hot Chili Peppers Steely Dan Cypress Hill Galactic

The Ghostland and Michal Menert show was pretty amazing. The lights were insane.
We got there for the last hour/hour and ten or so of Ghostland. I was disappointed I couldn't see Menert, but I caught him last year with Pretty Lights Music Corporation. I thought the light show was great. I'm kind of mixed on Ghostland. I like them, but the singer's voice will annoy me from time to time. I did run into one of my Pretty Lights contacts who told me any potential show is next weekend.

Anybody got an extra for the galactic/JJ Grey show at the orpheum 4/30? Also looking for an extra to the 2AM FIYA Powa show at the maison tomorrow night.
Any recommendations for scoring tickets for these shows would be appreciated! Can't wait to get on the road back to my favorite city tonight!!

If sold out, outside the venues. If not, on the venue sites. Hanging back tonight but would love to go Adam Deitch birthday party at 3:00am.
Walk up to venue before doors open and put that finger in the air until someone sells ya their extra because their friend backed out. Works 95% of the time unless it's one of those shows were there are 50 people outside with their fingers in the air like Voodoo Dead last year.
How was Ween at Meglomaniac's (or did they end up playing)? --------------------------------------
Hitting Lettuce and Break Science tonight with Cyril Neville, Oteil Burbridge and Nigel Hall band

Will probably hit Break Science Live Band on Saturday at Blue Nile -------------------------------------- Fest run:
Thursday - Skipping as I had to work today
Friday - Shamarr Allen & Underdawgs, Dirty Dozen, Pres Hall Brass, T-Ray the Violinist, (start with) Paul Simon/My Morning Jacket (end with)
Saturday - Soul Rebels, Royal Southern Brotherhood, Pres Hall Jazz Band, Big Freedia, Dr. John & Nite Trippers, Rebirth Brass Band, (start with) Stevie Wonder, Beck, Buddy Guy, Snoop Dogg (end with) <--- an actual real [tm] conflict, not some chump band vs. chump band
Sunday - Zigaboo's Funk Review, Stooges Brass Band, Dumpstaphunk with Art Neville, Neil Young & Promise of the Real, Arlo Guthrie's 50th Anniversary Alice's Restaurant
Probably taking tomorrow night off unless Pretty Lights Secret goes down
keep us updated if you hear anything. we are doing the early Kamasi show tomorrow but if PL goes down and I have the energy I'm sure he'll be going on later than that.
heading over tonight, fest next three days. have fun Thursday people!
I checked on it last night. We know Derek was in town last weekend, because some of the contacts met him at Floozies late night. He knew what they were talking about with that warehouse show under the Mississippi River Bridge or in a nearby warehouse (which is where he did the Buku after-party set between Pretty Lights Live at Buku and Analog:Y at The Joy. So something is going to happen, and I expect to run into him either tonight at Lettuce/Break Science or possibly Saturday at Break Science Live.
For people going today who may be ZZ Top fans, the rumor is that the Reverend Willie G (aka Billy Gibbons) will be joining Tedeschi Trucks Band on stage.
I am so bummed that I had to cancel my Austin trip and now I will be here in NOLA and not going to Jazzfest. I am just ready to get into a new house and spend my moneys again! Worst Jazzfest for me, ever.
EDIT: Weekend 1 was amazing between Fuzz, Luva and Ben, its just weekend 2 that is the worst.
This is the ultimate "too long, don't read" post. Just had to get my thoughts out on my first NO experience before I forgot 'em.
To summarize -- HOLY SHIT I am already looking at when to return. WHAT A FUCKING BLAST. There is NO SINGLE MUSICAL EXPERIENCE like New Orleans during JazzFest. The tunes, the FOOD, the drinks, the sun, THE FUN!! What perfect weather all weekend.
Friday at the fairgrounds was unreal. Niiiice and open, no lines to be heard of and easy to walk up to great spots for all the shows I saw. Grace Potter was great, busting out covers of When Doves Cry and a great singalong version of Kiss. She later sat in with Gov't Mule but I was too busy enjoying the FUCK out of Steely Dan. Was expecting a fun, if not a little cheesy nostalgia set, but holy fuck, they've got a tight show! Loved the banter. Bodhitsava, Hey 19, Black Friday, Reelin' all killed it, but good lord My Old School was such a great dance party. Dipped over to Janelle Monae just in time to see her and Kellindo rip an unreal cover of Let's Go Crazy.
The Original Meters show late-night was one of the best shows I've ever seen. Was worried they'd be a little rusty but they were as tight as ever. The setlist was the stuff of my dreams. CANNOT BELIEVE they played "Ain't No Use" -- what a jam. It'd been evading me all these years! At various points throughout the evening, Warren Haynes, Trombone Shorty and Grace Potter sat in for a tune or two.
Saturday at the fest was my first experience of the famous JazzFest crowds. Hooooo mama that can kill your buzz quickly if you're not prepared. Thankfully I had expected it, and as a result, bounced around all day. I've got a festival theory: "good spot -- or good time?". At JazzFest, you opt for a good time, EVERY TIME! Gentilly was packed near right back to the porta potties for Rateliff and Van. Caught a few great Rateliff soul-burners (great band) and headed over to Pearl Jam just in time to see the Steve Gleason intro. With how packed it was, I was actually surprised that I was able to get a decent spot on the field last minute. Caught the PJ set up till Sirens, when I dipped over to Congo to catch Mystikal KILLING IT! It was almost more of a funk/soul show than hip-hop. Sure, he can spit, but what a showman! Headed back over to Gentilly to catch Van do "Brown Eyed Girl" and "Baby Please Don't Go". He was in great voice but man, turn that shit up!! Could barely hear the band from the track. Waded through the massive crowds to get back to PJ in time for Given To Fly. The closing superjam with the Followills and Chad Smith was an awesome way to end day two.
Saturday night, the London Souls stole the show. They dropped over two hours of Toussaint and Beatles classics, with guest sit ins from Eric Krasno, Doug Wimbish, Ian Neville and Cyrille Neville. It takes some kinda awesome band to make you think "wait a minute, how good a song is WHY DON'T WE DO IT IN THE ROAD?!?!" What a groove fest.
Sunday at the fest was PEAK crowd. Couldn't get anywhere close to the main stages so I figured I'd check out the smaller ones while stuffin' my face with crawfish bread and po boys. Taj Mahal turned out to be one of the best sets of the weekend for me. So amazing that his voice and blues pickin' somehow sound even better after all these years. Finished off my first JazzFest in true New Orleans fashion, groovin' with Big Chief Monk. What a fun set!
Sunday night I headed to Preservation Hall for Midnight Preserves, where I was thrilled to see New Orleans legends Irma Thomas and Henry Butler sit in with the band. What an authentic show!! Couldn't see much from the back but that did not hinder my enjoyment one bit. The possible highlight of the whole weekend was Clint Maedgen closing the night with a show-stopping cover of Purple Rain. The sound was fantastic, and while the show was a little short, the ambiance in the Hall is something else. Everyone has got to go, if not for a show, then just to check out that bomb-ass courtyard bar in the back, which my girlfriend and I headed to for a drink once the show finished. We got in the bar line behind some giant who was chatting up some dude in front of him and waited for about five minutes before he turned around and said he wasn't in line and to go ahead of him. That dude was Win Butler. I asked why he didn't sit-in that night but he said he was just there to enjoy the music and he wouldn't play any shows until later the following week. I go past the dude he was chatting to and my girlfriend freaked out because it was Mark Ruffalo. I then, for reasons unknown, started chatting him up about Zodiac. Very nice dude. I got our drinks and walked away smiling, then drunkenly thought, wait a minute, was he even in Zodiac?
Monday we headed to Crawfish Fest, which -- while expensive -- was really cool. Neville Jacobs have such a sweet thing going! What a nice mix of funk, blues and a little country for good measure. Ate half my weight in crawfish and drank a dozen varieties of their awesome beer.
Other great restaurants that deserve mention were Bacchanal (and the resulting cheese coma), Mimi's in the Marigny and the Joint.
Did some touristy shit on Tuesday and then headed out on the lonnnnnnnnng drive home shortly after.
tldr -- I'm coming back as quickly as I can. If not for Voodoo then I am SOOOOOOO IN for JazzFest next year.
Awesome shit Carson. Too bad we didn't get a chance to meet up and drink some. Tried to get together with Fuzzy as well, but it was so f'n packed we weren't able to make it happen. Next time mf's we'll plan better.
I f'n love Bacchanal. We used to live a few blocks away from there, and I'd go on Saturdays for the wine tastings. I recently went back for dinner, and it was beyond outstanding. The original owner/proprietor Chris passed away last year (young dude too), but they kept the place going.
Glad you had a great time. Your post reads like a f'n tourist brochure of shit. It's hard to believe that you've never been down here with the wisdom you have of some of the music scene and some of the places you went to.
