I would kill to have a weekend breakdown right now, but I guess beggars can't be choosers. With the lineup this complete, I imagine this bad boy comes out the same day as Roo.
Forgive the spelling, but the same guy has spilled a very juicy lineup below the headliners as well:
Elvis Castello, Bonnie Raitt, Julio Iglesias, Herbie Hancok & Wayne Shorter, Michael McDonald, Maxwell, Lauryn Hill, Galactic, Janelle Monae, Preservation Hall, Kermit Ruffins, The Isley Brother, Maze Featuring Frankie Beverly, Chris Botti, Grace Potter, Brandi Carlile, Buffy Sainte Marie, Aaron Neville, Arturo Sandoval, Ellis Marsalis, Irma Thomas, CeCe Winans, Taj Mahal, Terence Blanchard, Gregory Porter, The Lone Bellow, Punch Brother, Elvin Bishop, John Hammond, Alpha Blondy, Rhiannon Giddens, Elle King, Ivan Neville's Dumpstaphunk with Art Neville, Rebirth, Jonathan Batiste, Big Freedia, Mystikal
Most of that is eh compared to the HL's and SubHL's (other than Hancock). But I like Lauryn Hill, Galactic, PH, Kermit, Isleys, Freedia and Mystikal. Some of the other names are great too (Dumpstaphunk, Terence Blanchard especially if with E Collective) and certainly Grace Potter/Lone Bellow/Rebirth should be good.
The way it works is they release the lineup by weekend number but I don't think they tell you which day of that weekend that artist is on until the schedule comes out. Weekend 1 is Friday-Saturday-Sunday; Weekend 2 is Thursday (seems to have become Jam Day, aka Locals Thursday)-Friday-Saturday-Sunday. Last year the lineup came out around January 12 (Thursday?) and the tickets went on sale on-line that following Monday or Tuesday. You buy a ticket for the weekend and can use it on any of the 3 or 4 days for that weekend. If you want more days, you just buy more tickets. I usually get one on early bird for each weekend and end up buying 2 or 3 others along the way. The alternative, as Vieux said, is the WWOZ Brass Pass which for $300-400 (somewhere around there), you get all 7 days with some perks. I've never done it, but it's probably worth it if I was planning on ever going all 7 (or even 5 or 6 days) since tickets run around $65-70 each. The biggest problem for me is the night and late night shows. I'll never forget dragging ass to go see String Cheese after a until 5am EOTO show in the Marigny the night before. Haha. Since there are so many night shows, over night and late night shows, a lot of those *edit* days I'll just hit late stuff. Keep in mind the fest itself ends at (*edit) 7pm.

I read that as Mase the first time though...got real excited

The Brass Pass is only worth it if you are going to use it for at least 6 of the 7 days. You get unlimited in and out of the festival, the WWOZ tent, which has free fruit, coffee, water and MANGO FREEZE!!! I eat the fuck out of mango freezes. Oh and it has fans and misters and a bathroom. So when it is the middle of the day and balls hot, you have a place to sneak off and cool off. The price of the brass pass is actually the same amount as buying 7 days without the taxes; but since you buy it from WWOZ you can write off part of it on your taxes as a donation (I think it is 50%).
I don't know what that fest ends at noon shit that esteban is posting, it ends at dusk.

I kinda wanna go to Jazz Fest. I never really paid it any mind until last year because I knew it ended early and had headliners like Bon Jovi and Kid Rock. I glanced in the thread here last year and saw how much great stuff they had going on for the night shows and became interested. I like what I see listed for the fest in '16 too so far.
Dead & Company really needs to happen. If they aren't at Wanee then I doubt they are ready to tour because I'm sure that was Wanee's #1 priority after WSP.
Buffy Saint-Marie is a random get. Never even heard of her playing a show. Kinda like a slutty Joan Baez. I've found her records at thirft stores and she's got her tits out and such.

Stevie Wonder, Pearl Jam, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Neil Young, Snoop Dog, Paul Simon, Van Morrison, and Herbie Hancock with Wayne Shorter, My Morning Jacket, Gary Clark Jr., Johny Langm Buddy Guy, Mavis Staples, Dr. John, Govt Mule, Arlo Gunthrie, Boz Scaggs, Tedeschi Trucks, Snarky Puppy"
If that is true then def a step back from last year.
I would most definitely be at Neil, Van Morrison, Herbie and hopefully get a day to split Pearl Jam/MMJ.
I'd have to disagree that it's a step back. I think it's an awesome start. Stevie Wonder, Pearl Jam, Neil Young, Chili Peppers, Snoop Dog, Paul Simon, Herbie & Wayne Shorter, MMJ, Buddy Guy, Dr. John, Arlo Guthrie, Snarky Puppy and Mule? Fuck. I'm going to end up having to go more than I had anticipated.
I mean, that's a great lineup, I just expect a lot as they've been going balls out the few years. I guess for my tastes it's not epic or anything. I'm just disappointed that guy didn't say Gilmour I had my heart set on him =)
Add Gilmour and I would pop a load off on this lineup
I gotta go to Jazzfest. It is right before Hangout so cash gets short, but the musicians there are fantastic and it is like an old classic rocker's Mecca of music.

That's the AEG Live side of things. They get giant (or formerly giant) acts to bring in more people which can be an absolute clusterquack (haha, self censor). But the soul of the festival is more with the smaller acts. If I had to summarize in a few sentences (without spending a ton of time crafting said sentences), it would be something like this.
Jazzfest doesn't ever sell out. So one some days, it's a complete disaster with massive crowds of people. This is not generally the case for Fridays and is certainly not the case for Locals Thursday. All three of those days are the smallest crowds (particularly Locals Thursday). If it has been raining any time within a few days before, and this is April, the grounds can become a mush pit <-- not to be confused by a mosh pit of course. The festival is located at the Fair Grounds Racetrack which is our local horse racing track which is open from November til March. There is some smell of horse around, but I think anyone from the south doesn't really care about that. Plus, it's better than Patchouli Oil. Unfortunately, the grounds are way too small for massive days (like when Springsteen played - I think 2014).
They made some changes a couple of years ago as the old timers used to post up chairs all the way to the front. They were often Nazis about anyone passing by their "turf." So Jazzfest forced them back about 25 yards from the front of the stage which makes it easier to walk up. We went straight to the front row for Phish, and had some WSP buddies post up early for front row of chairs/rugs for that. They also made roped off aisles that you can walk to get through the crowds. That was also an improvement.
The overall collection of food there is better than any other festival I've ever been to. I'm local, but there's is a ton of great stuff. You can get anything you'd ever imagined to be affiliated with New Orleans. And the food isn't that expensive.
There are about 12 stages and music areas though there may be some one-off spots with someone just playing somewhere. As you will see from the link, most of the big name people play in opposition either as headliners or subheadliners. The main stage is for the biggest headliner. The Gentilly Stage is on the other side of the track and is the other big headliner for that day - usually an alternative or younger act. And then the Congo Square Stage (in the middle of the grounds) will have the Rap/Hiphop/R&B/Reggae headliner of the day. You will also have major act at that time in the Jazz Tent and Blues Tent. For instance, as the chart below shows, Friday week one was: www.nojazzfest.com/downloads/2015-New-Orleans-Jazz-Fest-7-day-schedule.pdf Main - Keith Urban Gentilly - Wilco Congo Square - Jimmy Cliff Jazz Tent - Snarky Puppy Blues Tent - Jimmy Vaughn
So chances are, there will be conflicts in stuff you want to see on any given day (that day would have been tough for me between Snarky Puppy and Jimmy Cliff). During the day, there are a ****-ton of local acts, often very credible. You will also have a representing country chosen by Jazz Fest to showcase its food, arts and culture. I could be wrong, but I think this year it is Belize. So there will be acts, food and culture all weekend featuring musicians and artists from Belize (if that wasn't last year).
You will also meet more people from all over the world than most other festivals. You also can pretty much do whatever you want there, as the cops don't really much care as long as you aren't fighting or causing a nuisance. So you can drink to whatever limit you want to go. Since the festival ends at 7:00pm, don't expect wild light shows. There are some lights, but really the headliners just have to play to the crowd without any gimmicks. And the audience and performers know this, so they usually will bring whatever they have for the crowd. As stated in my earlier post, pretty much everyone comes to town for the fest, so the night shows are really where it's at. There will be rap, EDM, jam, rock, reggae, etc. We saw Hot 8 at Banks Street last year, and it was one of 6 sets they were doing that day. They popped in for their $250 and went on to the next show. People sit in with everyone. I think @beachbobseger said in 2014, there was a Gov't Mule show that featured maybe 20 people sitting in. Most of the night shows start at either 8, 10, 12 or 2am. So it's possible to see multiple shows in a night. We caught some show at the Civic (damn if I can remember now) and headed out to Floozies with Snarky Puppy at 2am. With only about 105 days until the festival, all the night shows will be posted on a site called www.jazzfestgrids.com/ If you follow that once a week or so beginning in February, they will have all the superjams, collaborations, concert halls and venues. It's been wiped clean for 2016, so there's nothing on it yet. But I'm sure we'll all be posting updates through April as things get announced.

All makes sense. And while a great list, I've seen everyone mentioned other than Van Morrison. Certainly wouldn't mind seeing Neil Young and Paul Simon again. Dead & Co. would be alright since I didn't go see them last year. The wife will be excited for this one. I'm anxious to see the late nights.
my thoughts: Out of that list Stevie Wonder, Pearl Jam, Red Hot Chili Peppers are obviously main stage headliners. Paul Simon, Van Morrison, and Neil Young could be gentily stage headliners, but Paul and Neil are possible friday main headliners. And MMJ could be main thursday headliner. SO it's missing at least 1 big headliner. Possibly 3.

it's a blast man, the whole setup with the shorter fest days, the incredible food, the local talent, and the night shows is a completely different paradigm than any other fest. throw in the city of new orleans and it becomes a trip every live music lover should experience.

MMJ has always played gentilly stage. I don't see them making that jump yet. Or maybe I'm not ready for them to make that leap yet.
If you think Wilco, WSP, and SCI are fine to close the main on a thursday, but it would be a jump for shit like Robert Plant, John Fogerty, MMJ, etc then I'm not sure what to tell ya. Weekend gentilly closers are just as big and sometimes bigger than thursday acura closers. It's all a matter of what day they can play where they get scheduled.
MMJ headlining on Thursday would be perfect. Hopefully we don't get stuck with another Phish snoozefest this year.
Been listening to MMJ all week, so ready to see them again. Phone Went West live is one of the best things ever.
Yeah, I'd dig the **** out of seeing My Morning Jacket at any point. Whether it's Thursday main closer or Saturday Gentilly, I'm fine either way provided there aren't any sick conflicts that would force me to split the set (e.g. dropping by to pay respects to Arlo Guthrie or Neil Young or whatever). I could be in the minority, but I thought Phish was great. I've only seen them a few times, so I don't have a large pool of reference. But I've rewatched parts of it, and always liked it (unlike the Kenny Rogers interlude at Bonnaroo 2012 which I still get laughed at for jabco ). There weren't any moments for me like String Cheese bringing out Blind Boys of Alabama, but I still thought it was good. But Phish was a Saturday, right? So the last 2 Thursday closers would have been String Cheese and Widespread Panic (I think).

Well, we only watched the first set and encore of Phish and it was a snoozefest. Looks like their second set was way better, but we were getting melted by Robert Plant during that.

The Phish set was cool, and I was delighted to see them at Jazzfest, but the show was just OK IMO. Had a great time because Phish shows are generally always a good time, but I've never felt the need to go back and listen to the show again.
Glad you enjoyed yourself though, always happy to hear about people having a good time at Phish.
Personally I'd take a mediocre show from Phish above a mediocre show from any other band though.
Gotcha. I hated missing Plant, because I'd never seen him. But we had rail at Phish, and it was sufficiently cool to hold our interest. It was my middle kid's first time seeing them, and he was blown away. He was like, damn dad, how many bands are there where everyone can actually play and sing? I think that show was a turning point for him to react against his former affinity for DJ's, and that carried through for WSP which he absolutely loved. He's a big Trey Band fan which I know isn't for everyone. He always had jam and rock tendencies, but he now argues about EDM with all his friends. They think he's just a hater, which he isn't because he loves GRiZ, Pretty Lights, Bassnectar, Gramatik and stuff like that. But he will not go to a Brillz, 3LAU or generic DJ show anymore. Guess that's called growing up.
I enjoyed The Wharf show in OB, AL a little more. But we had to cut out a little early that night and unfortunately missed the encore. Damn, I'm ready for Jazzfest to release the full lineup so I can hunt for gems.
Orange Beach show was good. Still can't believe what went down that day.
What am I forgetting? We didn't get there until just a bit before show-time. We were at Pass the Good and drove down to Orange Beach. It took about an hour to get from Perdido Key past Floribama. We thought there was a wreck or something, but it was just the cops casually allowing the 'necks to cross the street. Last time I saw something like that was driving in Southern Mississippi with a few hundred thousand other people trying to evacuate for Hurricane Katrina and watching these two redneck cops sitting in their cars in a 1 light city watching people get stuck at a traffic light every minute or two when there was no cross traffic at the other street. They literally were parked next to the traffic signal control and did nothing. It took about 3 hours to get through that. We found the LEO service at Wharf to be somewhat accommodating all things considered.
