Does anyone else's feet get sore watching the bands at Boston Calling? Standing on those bricks in government center make my feet sore. I can't watch two bands in a row without sitting down because my feet and ankles start aching.
Here's a better metric: How many of those artists have had a big, mainstream radio hit in the past few years. Sia, yeah. Disclosure, yeah. Hozier, yeah. The rest of them? Nah.
Radio plays are nonsense, who listens to radio anymore....come on? I'mma let you finish but Beck won a Grammy for best album. Someone should get the actual numbers for Boston Calling attendance, I would like to see. 2014 had the biggest names (Kendrick Lamar, Lorde). I know the only day where people couldn't get tickets was the Modest Mouse/Brand New/Bastille/Tegan & Sara day which was by far the best day in history of Boston Calling in my opinion. It was sold out for awhile and then they released more tickets and was also the most packed day I have attended.
If you want to keep moving the goal posts:
Chandelier: 2 million copies sold in America with its parent album selling 500k. Latch: 3 million copies sold in America.
Morning Phase hit around 300k at the time of the Grammys. Let's say it bumped it up to 500k. No big single pulled from the album. Kendrick Lamar didn't play in 2014, he played in 2013.

You wanna go by sales Beck has a 2x platinum album, a platinum album, and 5 gold albums. Sia has one gold album. Disclosure has 0. Beck has easily had a more successful career than those two combined. Kendrick Lamar has a platinum and To Pimp A Buttefly hasn't been certified yet, but will be. Lorde has a 2x platinum record. I was giving you the benefit of the doubt by not going by record sales and instead going by facebook likes but there's not competition arguing that this is a weak lineup if you go by record sales. And yeah my bad I got my years messed up. Kendrick Lamar did play in 2013 too bad they couldn't get him again, I guess they thought Robyn would draw better.
For the record, I did say that I would have preferred they'd got a rock headliner like The Strokes rather than one of the headliners, because, yes, if you're putting four acts on the top line, they should represent more than 2 genres. But I say it's diverse because I'm paying attention to the whole lineup, not the top two lines. Again, name another festival that has 23 artists, and who manages to fill most of it with exceptional artists of almost every major modern genre. Two of the best songwriters of 2015 (one of all time, the other also arguably the best alt-rock act of 2015), the second best rapper of 2015, one of the best pop songwriters and singers of the last 5 years who only has one other show booked, one of the best soul singers, and the best artists in big-name EDM. Plus great pop-rock, psych-pop, folk-rock, Americana, plus whatever the hell you want to call fucking Janelle Monáe and Battles, who are two of the sets I'm most looking forward too.
And the idea that the people and city of Boston hate the festival is kind of silly. There's a reason it's on Memorial Day Weekend; the city, especially where CHP is, is far from busy. And I got a laugh out of the idea that someone who's not going to the festival would think "Well if Beck is playing this, this disruption is a-ok with me!" and then thinking now "Sia? Disclosure?? They fucking take up that small part of the city and provide local businesses with increased revenue for a weekend for them? What is this festival coming to...?"
I really think if they'd had The Strokes or someone similar as one of the headliners instead of Robyn or Odesza, you guys would be thrilled. And yeah it would be better, but even a fest of this size isn't all about the headliners. Did Beck play one of my favorite festival sets of last year? Of course! But so did Jason Isbell, St. Vincent, and MØ.
Also, because I was challenged, here's my attendance record: May 2013 May 2014 September 2014 May 2015

Lorde and Kendrick played OVER TWO YEARS AGO. We were talking about 2015 and this upcoming 2016, but you keep moving the goal posts. If that's the case then BC haven't had a big headliner in nearly two years and you can argue that they've been going down hill ever since. Where was the outcry when platinum-less headliners like MMJ and Alt-J performed?
And again, I said "IN THE PAST FEW YEARS". Beck's last gold certified album was over ten years ago and his last platinum was twenty years ago. If overall career sales somehow equaled higher festival bookings, Beck would have headlined Coachella over Arcade Fire in 2014 and would be headlining Gov Ball over The Strokes this year.

Finally someone intelligent on this board that doesn't result to calling people that challenge the idea of the lackluster headliners "twats" and "fuckwads" or just post silly memes. I think the under card is pretty cool like I mentioned before. But the headliners are awful compared to previous years. I guess my biggest complaint is it seems like it developed into a festival where there was at least one or two headliners I got excited about but this year not so much. I can't justify spending $80 on Robyn or Odesza. Boston Calling is a huge disruption and I think the draw for this year is going to be poor and they are going to lose money. The logistics of Boston Calling seem very complicated compared to other festivals and the fact that the average person has probably not heard of half the headliners is going to hurt the fest. As much as people are like Robyn is a great grab or whatever, she's not headliner worthy.

I just think you're underestimating the popularity of some of these artists. The headliners will definitely draw a different (and yes, younger) crowd than past editions, but Disclosure are pretty damn big and from what I know, have yet to really play a major Boston gig, Haim are back and will likely get bigger when they put out their next album, Sia is fucking Sia!, Odesza are one of the faster-rising electronic artists (sold out Three nights at Terminal 5 in NY after initially just announcing one, not sure what Boston was like). Robyn is a gem, but I agree she lacks major name recognition.
Also just because I love how unique this lineup is, here's a fun breakdown: Sia - One of 2 current shows booked, hasn't done any major touring or gigging in a longgg time Disclosure - One of 4 US bookings, first major Boston show ever (I think) Robyn - One of 2 current bookings Sufjan Stevens - One of 3 US bookings, only one on the East Coast Janelle Monáe - Exclusive City and Colour - Only US Festival booking Elle King - Only festival booking The Front Bottoms - One of 3 US Festivals (personally not a fan though) BØRNS - One of 3 US bookings, only one on the East Coast Charles Bradley - Only US Festival booking (other than some small ones in Florida and Idaho...) The Vaccines - One of 2 US Festivals Battles - Only US booking Christine and the Queens - Exclusive Lisa Hannigan and Aaron Dessner - Exclusive Lizzo - One of 3 US Festivals Palehound - Only US Fest (but touring this winter w/ Torres) Michael Christmas - One of 2 US Fests
That's 17 out of 23 artists that'll be tough to catch if you're not at Boston Calling this May

Arcade Fire = Too Big The Strokes = NEEDS TO HAPPEN, WHY DO YOU KEEP FUCKING THIS UP CRASHLINE??????
EDIT: My new theory is that BC couldn't book the Strokes because they're headlining Gov Ball, so they're booking them for September. Please.

Can you please go through the Facebook likes and distinguish which of those are Americans vs. Outside the US? I think the people here would be shocked that majority of Robyn's likes are probably not here in the US, making her less relevant to headline a major festival like this.

BTW if anyone still needs a place to stay for this, AirBnB has some really cheap places still that I'm positive are going to be scooped up really soon. Get on it!

Strokes barely play shows and haven't played in Boston since it looks like 06. They would be a huge draw. I think maybe they would be too big for Boston Callin as well. Also probably why they're headlining over Beck at Governor's Ball. I'm planning on going to Amnesia Rockfest in Canada, crossing my fingers that they'll play that.
Robyn is #5 at Gov Ball, is being #3 at Boston Calling that illogical? It's a much smaller fest, with smaller headliners, getting the #5 of a major festival as your #3 is actually quite impressive.

So random ass question what are people's thoughts on the front bottoms playing this? I saw them over a year ago at House Of Blues and didn't know them that well but liked them. I feel like they would fit in better playing Warped Tour or something like that, but this is huge for them. They are definitely a band you have to be in the mood for. Sometimes I like them, other times I think they are just annoying. I didn't particularly care for the newest album but there older stuff I like.

They're a little big but I still think they could do it. I'm seeing them at Gov Ball and saw them at Landmark, my desire for them is more for BC's sake. They seem like the perfect headliner for this fest. Last fall Landmark and BC were the same weekend, this spring Gov Ball and BC are a week apart. Seems like both of those are instances in which BC should have been able to book them as well unless I'm right about the radius clause for GB.

Wouldn't the radius claus in this case have affected Robyn's BC booking? Hopefully your right though and we get the Strokes in the fall. Even if the strokes announced a show at Bank of America Pavilion or whatever the fuck it's called now, I'd go. My theory is they spent too much on Sia, that they wouldn't be able to pay the Strokes to play. They probably paid out the ass for Sia.

It's because the Strokes are headlining Gov Ball and Robyn's not. Both fests got My Morning Jacket last year because they weren't headlining GB

I think The Strokes are on the wishlist every year but they're either not touring or a larger festival gets them. I think the best bet for The Strokes is this fall or next. Hopefully they're still touring at that point.

They're supposed to be working on new music. Even if that doesn't inspire them to actually tour, it at least means they should still be active
