Perhaps he is, but you don't need to give such a bad attitude about it. How about instead of being snarky, you actually respond to this person with more than one sentence?
He has a point - Boston Calling has struggled to find an identity in an already crowded festival market. Many of its headliners over past editions have been shared with other festivals, and besides a few local acts, have had zero focus or emphasis on Massachusetts or Boston-based bands. What makes this stand out from other festivals of its size?
I think they don't have to have a set identity. I think they should just book acts that are great to see live, regardless of genre or where the band is from. It seems to work for them now. I like that one year I can see The Replacements, one year The Roots, one year Hozier and one year Robyn and Disclosure. What's wrong with that?
Nothing wrong at all with that from that perspective. Diversity and variety is always nice, but personally, I wished they replaced Odesza with either The Strokes, The Killers, or someone like that...
I really do like Boston Calling and I support them - I know people who started the festival at Crashline, as I used to work with Brian Appel at the Boston Phoenix before it shut down. I just hope it continues to grow and stay strong despite the tough climate for festivals. I'll be on the lookout for their Fall lineup, as I would love to attend again - its just not for me this time around, but I respect those who do like the lineup
You seem like a really nice person. Do you really care that much if someone is shitting over a lineup you like? Who cares? As you said yourself, "get over it." I'm not knocking anyone who likes this lineup, I hope anyone that goes enjoys themselves!
There's a handful of artists I like on there, but it just isn't enough for me to go all three days. To each his own!
I don't care if someone doesn't like a lineup, I don't like Bonnaroo's this year either. What I find off putting is acting like a festival owes you something.
Totally understandable - I too get annoyed when people act entitled and expect a festival to deliver based on their own tastes. I apologize that I misunderstood you!
I was hoping I could go to this instead of travelling to Governor's Ball or Mountain Jam, as this is much closer to me, but the headliners don't really do anything for me. That's okay though - they don't owe me anything, and I applaud them for taking some risks with a more eclectic, unique lineup. I hope it works for them and I look forward to the Fall lineup!
With the increasing pop and dance aspect starting last September with the three Europop divas on Saturday, it's interesting to note that last September was the first edition where they changed up their graphic design to include thin, sleek lines, thinner fonts...basically a look which you might find in a fashion magazine.
I wonder if they settled upon an identity last year, perhaps with the intention of transitioning to that new identity within the space of a few editions.
The moment we'll know whether that's true is when the September lineup video goes up on Sunday night. If there's an even stronger emphasis upon pop and electronic music, and even fewer rock artists, we'll know that they've found their identity. Unless, of course, they're going to need a full sales cycle on the May 2016 fest to judge whether this direction sells more tickets than previous editions did. They probably have half of the acts for Sept booked already.
So, maybe it's the May 2017 lineup which will be the real indication as to whether they've settled on the current mix as their fixed identity.
If they settle upon the current mix as the Boston Calling brand they might then end up doing another festival with a different name in Boston to sell tickets to a somewhat older skewing crowd. If BC keeps trending in the current direction, there's going to be room in the market for something which feels like a cross between Newport Folk and Riot Fest. If no one else like LiveNation (who already own a ridiculous number of the big fests) or Bowery Boston step in to fill that need, Crash Line might just do it. After all, General Motors has around five different brands, each designed to appeal to different car buyers.
The same folks run Shaky Knees, Shaky Beats, and Shaky Boots in Atlanta. No reason why Crash Line couldn't do the same here.
You're wildly over thinking this.
Eh, that's half the fun, just like speculating about sports and politics.

I live in an area where I can shop at half a dozen different grocery stores fairly close to my apartment. If one store doesn't carry a particular product or even an whole category of item, it's no big deal because another store has that covered.
But if I lived in a town with only one grocery store, they better have all of the bases covered so that everyone can get whatever they need.
Boston Calling is the only store in town and, as such, need to give a little more thought to making as many people happy as possible. Especially since they're not giving us a bunch of stages to choose from.
Frankly, it blows my mind when people complain about lineups at festivals with 3 - 6 concurrent stages. To me, that sort of choice would be amazing and there's almost always something happening for every taste.

Name another festival with 23 artists that covers some of the best names in pop, alt-rock, EDM, singer-songwriters, rap, and soul
I get not liking the particular artists, but variety is not the problem here

The problem is, due to its location in the city, Boston Calling has no room to expand. There's really only room for two or three stages within City Hall Plaza, unless they move locations.
Also, I'm sure Boston Calling has given plenty of thought into making people happy, especially booking artists like Sia, Disclosure, Haim, Janelle Monae and Sufjan Stevens. There's plenty of variety that appeals to a lot of people (especially younger crowds, judging by reactions on social media).
Just because this lineup isn't your cup of tea doesn't mean they aren't putting enough thought into making as many people happy as possible. Plenty of people, including many in this thread, are really psyched about this lineup.

Beck, Pixies, My Morning Jacket, Jack Johnson, Death Cab for Cutie, Modest Mouse, The National, Lorde, Nas and The Roots, Vampire Weekend, Passion Pit, Kendrick Lamar, Fun., The National, The Avett Brothers, Alt-J, Alabama Shakes are the majority of the headliners the past few years. A little bit of hip hop mixed in, but nearly every lineup has been comprised entirely of alt-rock. Not knocking the lineup, but it's definitely more varied than years past. Still not sure how well EDM will play out in the venue, but I'm keeping an open mind.
And am I crazy or whoever brought up that idea of those old 90s bands playing actually sound like a pretty cool idea. 90% of the people that go to Boston Calling are more concerned with drinking than actually enjoying the bands anyways. What better way to enjoy your day than hearing drunk frat bros belching out Barbie Girl or All Star. This version will not sell well, I've gone to Boston Calling three times and no one I know, who has gone to this is actually interested in this lineup. It's one thing for a big artist like Beck, Lorde, Fun, The Roots or The Pixies to shut down an area of the city for a loud concert, people have heard of them. But for Robyn or Odesza to shut down the city I don't think people are going to be happy. There going to see it as an unnecessary disruption. Just curious about how many of you who are praising how great this lineup is have actually been to Boston Calling. I don't think people the city of Boston really likes it but dealt with it because it had acts people have heard of. Besides Elle King and Sia I doubt the average person has heard of any of these artists. And for you guys who say the diversity is great I don't get how you think 2 female pop artists and 2 EDM acts as headliners in any way is diverse. The undercard is okay though and if the lineup is the way it is I would probably go Saturday. Seeing Disclosure would be pretty cool, so would Sufjan, Vince Staples, Elle King, Front Bottoms, City & Colour (although I would prefer Alexisonfire) and Haim. I'm just happy that Weezer announced a Boston date later in the day. I was hoping for them and the Strokes to play a day but I guess not.

I really like this line up and I've been to every BC except the first one. Good try though. Also it's not as if people in Boston, especially college students, need an excuse to drink. I've heard worse things outside of my apartment window than I've heard at Boston Calling.

We really appreciate your thoughtful and nuanced explanation of why you're an ignorant fuckwad.

When these headliner's don't draw like previous years have and the whole concept of Boston Calling is in jeopardy because of low ticket sales, you'll be wishing they had headliners that people actually have heard of not Robyn or Odesza. But what do I know I'm an "ignorant quackwad" whatever the hell that means.
And then maybe blast Robyn's hit critically acclaimed single "Don't Fucking Tell Me What To Do" MY DRINKINGS KILLING ME MY DRINKINGS KILLING ME MY DRINKINGS KILLING ME MY SMOKINGS KILLING ME"
You people are a bunch of nature kids with no functions.

It just doesn't make any sense. Sia and Disclosure are bigger names than last September's headliners except maybe The Avett Brothers. At least they have legitimate hits unlike Alabama Shakes and Alt-J who have big songs but nothing like Chandelier or the handful of popular radio singles like Disclosure. Avett Brothers don't really have a big single to their name either.
The biggest name last September was Hozier whereas this May's fest has at least two big name hit makers.

My life is in jeopardy listening to your fucking dumb ass reasoning. I really enjoy how you choose to exclude Sia and Disclosure from your list. Very insightful analysis you twat.
1,795,752 BECK 2,079,629 PIXIES 431,164 MY MORNING JACKET 1,736,420 BEN HARPER
Complete garbage metric to use, I will admit but those are the amount of facebook likes from the past three boston calling headliners. What does this show? Obviously Sia is very big arguably the biggest artist to play Boston Calling, huge draw no argument there. And last fall was pretty weak compared to this year mainly due to Sia. But both those are weak compared to last spring. But 2 of the 3 lowest amount of "liked" artists are this years headliners. So make of it what you will. The bottom line is they probably spent alot of money on Sia, which took away from getting other quality headliners so they had to settle for Robyn and Odesza.

Maybe if you actually read what I posted instead of focusing on misogynist insults, you would have read that I said I liked Disclosure and would probably go the day that they would play. I have no problem with Sia at all, it's just not my thing so I don't think I would pay $80 to see her headline. I said that Robyn (who sucks) and Odesza are not worthy headliners for a festival that most people probably see as a nuisance. Whatever day or days doesn't have Sia or Disclosure is not going to draw very well.

Here's a better metric: How many of those artists have had a big, mainstream radio hit in the past few years. Sia, yeah. Disclosure, yeah. Hozier, yeah. The rest of them? Nah.

You're right. I just spent $185 to go see Sia and Robyn because I'm a misogynist.

Radio plays are nonsense, who listens to radio anymore....come on? I'mma let you finish but Beck won a Grammy for best album. Someone should get the actual numbers for Boston Calling attendance, I would like to see. 2014 had the biggest names (Kendrick Lamar, Lorde). I know the only day where people couldn't get tickets was the Modest Mouse/Brand New/Bastille/Tegan & Sara day which was by far the best day in history of Boston Calling in my opinion. It was sold out for awhile and then they released more tickets and was also the most packed day I have attended.
