It's usually right around Valentine's. I want to say shortly after the Grammy's. Last year was unusually early - in January. I'm not sure if that's the new normal.
I mean they've only announced the May fest twice, other than the original festival announcement. And Sound of Boston has an article announcing the 2014 lineup published on January 27
Sorry, I was in Recent Posts and thought I was responding to a question in the Hilton's thread about Bonnaroo.
MGMT tweeted that 2016 will be "the year MGMT re-dominates your mind hole"
If they're putting out a new album and touring, I could definitely picture them at BC. Pre-headlining I'd guess. I'd love to finally get a chance to see them, even though I've heard few positive things about their live sound.
With Forecastle, Firefly, and a few other lineups already announced, we're getting an indication of who's on the festival circuit in 2016.
It occurred to me that while Boston Calling has brought back a few bands for a second appearance, they're more likely to bring in acts they haven't yet booked than repeat acts, especially headliners. (Aaron Dessner's involvement with Crashline Productions makes The National an exception to the rule).
With this in mind, here's a list of mid-tier and headline acts who have been announced on a 2016 lineup, haven't announced a large local headlining date after March, and haven't yet played Boston Calling (I'm skipping acts who are likely to big to headline...i.e., if they'd play Fenway or the Garden, they're likely too large for BC). I'm betting that a lot of these show up in May or September:
Ryan Adams Gary Clark, Jr. Grouplove Shakey Graves Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness Speedy Ortiz Disclosure Blink-182 A$AP Rocky Fitz & the Tantrums Fetty Wap Ludacris Catfish & the Bottlemen Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats Elle King Saint Motel The Wombats The Struts Circa Waves Tedeschi Trucks Band Skrillex Robert Plant and the Sensational Space Shifters Ween Big Grams (Big Boi & Phantogram) Mac Miller Grace Potter Dr. Dog X Ambassadors
With the Coachella lineup announcement, here are a few more notable acts who haven't played BC yet and who are now announced as doing at least one festival this year:
Sufjan Stevens Rae Sremmurd Lord Huron Ice Cube James Bay Grimes Courtney Barnett The Arcs Silversun Pickups The Damned Jack Ü Lush Sia Beach House Rancid Chris Stapleton Cold War Kids The Kills Foals
Obviously, BC won't be nearly as EDM-heavy as Coachella, but they're overdue for an EDM act. Can't see them booking more than one or two per edition, though. I suspect that if they go EDM, they'll go with well-known names, since lesser-known EDM acts might clear the plaza (henceforth to be known as a "Reverse Hozier").
Of the various hip hop acts on the circuit, I'd bet on Ice Cube for BC (as long as he's not committed to filming a TV show or movie during both BC editions.) They've already showed an inclination to go for acts which include TV/movie personalities (The Roots, Tenacious D, Childish Gambino). I saw Ice Cube at the Blue Hills Pavilion a couple of years ago. A really fun set, and worth the price of admission just to see a Polo shirt and khakis-wearing middle aged investment banker try to bum rush the stage with some vicious breakdancing moves and get stopped by security.

After seeing Coachella's line-up, I feel like Boston Calling has the potential to be really good (at least last year Spring good).
But I'm probably just getting my hopes up.
No I think you're right. A lot of the worse acts touring/playing fests right now (Walk the Moon, The 1975, Twenty One Pilots) have played BC fairly recently.
Also, Florence + the Machine are playing BottleRock Napa, which is the same weekend as BC. Do you think there's any chance BC could pull her for Friday and then she'd fly over to CA?

I think its unlikely, but I would welcome her headlining. Seems odd that the only Boston stop on her tour was at the small (at least for her) Blue Hills Pavillon.

I just checked last year's Sasquatch lineup and Run The Jewels, St. Vincent, Sharon Van Etten, Tame Impala, and MO all made the cross-country flight and did both festivals.
The Sasquatch lineup drops on Monday. I'd expect there to be a small amount of overlap with Boston Calling, and the same might apply to Bottlerock. I suspect, though, that any act booked at both Sasquatch and BottleRock is unlikely to squeeze in a cross-country flight, too.
Here's a wishful thinking possibility for either edition this year: The I Don't Cares, the new band from Paul Westerberg of The Replacements and Boston's own Juliana Hatfield. Their debut album will be out shortly. I haven't read anything about a tour or scattered live dates, but something in the area is a given if they perform at all.
Beyond the local openers, I have a feeling that we may see a few bigger acts this year which include current or former locals, like The Both, The I Don't Cares, Speedy Ortiz, Tedeschi-Trucks, Dinosaur Jr, Weezer, and PVRIS.
@theryanadams Hey, Ryan, inquiring minds want to know...are you playing Boston Calling on Memorial Day weekend?
While he probably won't directly confirm one way or the other, he liked a tweet I sent him in 2014 in which I wrote that I hope that he's bringing his (then) new band to Boston. Not long after, the Wang show was announced. If he does the same thing with this tweet, that might be a strong indication that he's playing BC in May.

I was more so going off that BC and Bottlerocket have never shared headliners before. I'm sure it could happen, but I just doubt it will.
The Strokes are playing Gov Ball, we shared MMJ last year (granted they weren't headlining GB), but I'm a little hopeful BC could finally get them
Every year I hope they do and every year they don't. Ryan Adams subbing The Strokes - book it BC!
Since the first year, I've thought Florence and The Strokes would be two of the most perfect headliners. If we get one or both I'll be pretty excited. And RA into the Strokes is another dream of mine

I wonder if Gov Ball would prevent them from headlining another fest in the Northeast?

That was my fear. I imagine/hope the fact that most of BC's crowd is more local would allow for some more lenience

The Weeknd's only 2016 festival appearance is Hangout per their marketing so he'd be out. But I'd come to Boston for that.

Your hopes are wayyyy to high. I think The Weeknd and Florence are both too big to headline. Working with what you posted, I was amend it so that the top three are Strokes - Sleater Kinney - M83. BC is a much smaller fest than most - I think it only can accommodate 20k? I'd guess the limit on their budget prevents them from sharing any name from the Top 3 of any major fest (Lolla, Coach, Roo, Govball etc). But The Strokes are probably on the cheaper side when it comes to festival headliners, so I could see BC eventually getting them.
I'm actually really curious what BC gets for headliners. Almost all of the artists that are the right size playing other fests have either done BC like Death Cab, Beck, Alabama Shakes, etc, or don't seem like the best fit like Ellie Goulding (who isn't out of the question).
These are all long shots, but it doesn't seem like there are any obvious options this year, so I'll just dream big and end up disappointed: Florence + the Machine The Strokes Bon Iver Lana Del Ray Wilco Vampire Weekend (debuting new material) Sigur Ros (not sure if they'd play this fest, I'd be thrilled if they did) A Tribe Called Quest w/ The Roots Dispatch Phoenix Kendrick Lamar Queens of the Stone Age
Now to mentally prepare myself for Ellie Goulding - The Lumineers - Lenny Kravitz
Now to mentally prepare myself for Ellie Goulding - The Lumineers - Lenny Kravitz
Ellie Goulding is headlining TD Garden on June 15. A check of Ticketmaster indicates that three loge sections and the floor are sold out, as of right now, but tickets are still available in 43 different loge, club, and balcony sections. The map suggests that she should have booked Agganis or Blue Hills Pavilion instead, with promoter and booker wildly overestimating her box office potential, at least in greater Boston.
So...no way on Earth she's playing either edition of Boston Calling this year.
(I can't see The Lumineers headlining. They're more like the second line act who'd play before Ryan Adams on Friday night, not unlike OMAM opening for the Avetts.)
Tongue only partially in cheek, here's the May lineup:
Friday:
Angsty alt-country rocker still pining over his ex-wife Ex-wife's current boyfriend's band Folky singer/songwriter everyone but you has heard of
Saturday:
Emo-punk-pop legend Notable indie rock band which hit commercial peak years ago Pleasant, lightweight singer-songwriter who opened for Hozier at some point Third hottest rapper on the festival circuit Critically regarded and commercially rising Nashville country singer-songwriter Fifth line Newport Folk Festival act Oh, that chick. Isn't she related to somebody famous? Act I've never heard of Act you've never heard of Local band that always opens for your favorite local band who, by the way, will never be booked at Boston Calling, unlike their opening acts
Sunday
Kind of rock, kind of pop, kind of electronic band that college kids love Blip blip synth band Another guitar rock indie band with one or more members already receiving AARP newsletter Some really pop thing Side project band which serves as painful reminder that Outkast played everywhere except Boston Oh, that's the song from the car commercial. Buick or Audi, I think. First genuine EDM act at Boston Calling since 2013 Rising Massachusetts synth band Rising Massachusetts guitar band Local synth kids who've headlined at ME Up, but not ME Down

I was joking but I agree with what you said. Although I don't really know if Ryan Adams would headline. I would love if he did, and he's the fourth headliner at Forecastle where the other 3 are BC alum, but I just picture him more as a pre-HL for someone like The Strokes or Lana

Lana Del Rey would be a really weird choice to headline Boston Calling.
She's a cult artist with a very big cult, but if you're not a dedicated fan, you'd be hard pressed to name one of her songs. At a "one stage at a time" fest where acts aren't necessarily preaching to the choir, you want acts where the bulk of the crowd will recognize a few songs and have some familiarity with the headliners. Make a wrong choice in the running order, if not the booking, and you get half of the crowd leaving after the final Red Stage act (what happened after Hozier's set ended last Sept.)
The Strokes are a really good band that, like their hero Robert Pollard of Guided By Voices and countless side projects, has torpedoed their commercial potential by not touring behind album releases and, lately, not touring at all (save for a handful of festival dates). I could see them headlining Boston Calling now, because their audience keeps getting smaller with each passing year. Give it another year or two, and they'll be second line at Boston Calling.
Ryan Adams may not be huge, and would almost certainly headline a venue smaller than Del Rey or The Strokes in Boston at this time, but he's got a few characteristics which make him a perfect Boston Calling headliner. A mainstream Nashville arena headliner had a hit with one of his songs, and that song was later performed on American Idol. He gets a ton of press upon covering Taylor Swift's latest album. He gets a ton of press upon breaking-up with his actress/singer wife. He gets respect in indie rock and Americana circles. There's nothing about his music which is going to send people running for the exits.
If we we're fortunate (like EVERY OTHER CITY IN AMERICA), we could choose between multiple stages at the same time and you could go a bit left of center with your headliners, with someone like Lana Del Rey in one of two headlining spots. But don't think that Crashline Productions didn't notice thousands heading for the gates as soon as Hozier finished on Sunday night. I'm expecting a lot of safe choices in the headlining spots this year, with more offbeat choices in the final Red Stage slot.
