Also, I just noticed that gates open at 2:30 on Friday, which means music probably starts at 3:30 as opposed to 6:30-7:30 in years past.
In every way, today's news (including the earlier Friday start) positions Boston Calling as a legitimate second tier fest, one step down from Bonnaroo/Coachella/Lollapalooza, but the equal of other U.S. fests.
Yea I haven't been to a camping fest since Firefly 2014, so I'm long overdue. I have a feeling Firefly will have too much overlap with this with a bunch of garbage filler in between to justify going this year, but I'm hoping they prove me wrong. Maybe I can figure out a way to camp in Montreal for Osheaga haha
would highly recommend Montreal, book an Airbnb now, you can get a whole apartment for 30-50 bucks a night! Montreal is also an amazing city with plenty going on at all hours. And Osheaga is probably my favorite festival, definitly top 3
Maybe I just have bad luck, but whenever I would try to book an Airbnb for Osheaga in 2015 it would end up getting canceled. I ended up getting a pretty good deal at the hotel zero 1 ($96/night) which was in an awesome location right next to Société des Arts Technologiques [SAT] where an aftershow was being held. I guess I'll give Airbnb another shot.

Are we still placing Bonnaroo as a legit Tier 1 festival after two lackluster lineups in a row?

WayHome is another option for people who live in the Northeast and want do a camping festival. Logistically, I'm about the same distance from both WayHome and Firefly, but I don't have much confidence in Firefly to deliver a strong lineup.
WayHome is the main festival I am anxiously waiting to see the lineup for.... They said back in December it would be out after the new year; I hope that means sooner rather than later.

Yeah but Osheaga is happening at a dang racetrack this year

keep forgetting about that.. was going to try to make it back up there this year but we'll see

I kinda forgot about WayHome. It's about 3 hours farther from me than Firefly and about 4.5 hours farther than Osheaga, which isn't totally unreasonable but it would take that much better of a lineup from them to get me to drive 10 hours.

Are we still placing Bonnaroo as a legit Tier 1 festival after two lackluster lineups in a row?
camping experience and other fun stuff is what sets the two apart. we'll see what BC does with more space but I bet there isn't anything comparable to silent disco, grove, or even jake's barn.
legit blown away and excited for the BC lineup though. cant wait

Yeah its going to take an absolutely amazing lineup to get me to consider it. I think it is going to be a lot smaller too. Evenko is starting an EDM fest this year. So I think that means at least that stage is getting cut.
If AF is there I might grab a day pass, see them, and bum around the city.

I hear what you're saying, but Firefly has a silent disco and camping and no one is calling them a top tier fest. Also Lolla has no camping or really any other "experiences" other than the music (from my understanding, never actually been).
In my opinion:
Bonnaroo 2014 - Clearly a Tier 1 Fest Bonnaroo 2015 - Still Clear Tier 1, but showing signs of weakness Bonnaroo 2016 - Tier 1 Headliners, but undercard really starting to slip Bonnaroo 2017 - Solidly in Tier 2, without U2 borderline Tier 3
With this lineup I think BC moves from Tier 3 up to Tier 2.
A film experience curated by Natalie Portman...Wtf?? That's pretty damn awesome.
You say that now, but do you really want to sit through an 8-hour documentary on the life and times of Jar Jar Binks?
(Seriously, how many people are going to want to sit through a 90 min or two hour movie? That doesn't mean missing only one musical performer, it likely takes out all or part of two sets. To me, it's a place to go sit down for 20 minutes before heading to catch another band.)
So what's the consensus on how this will work logistically in terms of conflicting acts and stages.
Because I assume Bon Iver has to play in the dark, would he conflict against someone like Mumford?
I think it's pretty safe to say that none of the top 4 lines will conflict. My guess is that the bottom few lines play the green stage opposed the bigger names in the mid card during the day and then the Headliners and possibly sub headliners will play unopposed. In the past, they have used only one stage on Friday, so maybe this year they will just do the two main stages and save the green stage and lower acts for Saturday and Sunday. This is all pure speculation, I have no idea how it will actually look.
(Another fest Bon Iver is playing but not headlining)
You caught me. No point in lying anymore. I make up all the "scoops" I get. I have no connections at all. I am right more often than anyone else around here because of sheer luck.
Ok for comparison. (Italicized acts are shared between the two, * means I've seen them before)
Acts I'd see at Boston Calling Tool, Mumford, Chance, Bon Iver, The xx, Weezer, Sigur Ros, Solange, RTJ, Nathaniel Ratelieff, Tegan andSara, Sylvan Esso, Majid Jordan, Flatbush Zombies, Wolf Parade, Danny Brown, Frightened Rabbit. Modern Baseball*, CSH, Mitski, Francis & the Lights, PUP (underrated IMO), Whitney, Strand of Oaks, Hiss Golden Messenger*, Moses Sumney, Lacy Dacus*, Vundabar
LD and Vundabar are on the last line.
(28/44?)
Shaky Knees The xx, LCD*, Phoenix, Pixies, The Shins, Nick Murphy, Sylvan Esso, Dr. Dog, Bleachers*, Highly Suspect, FIDLAR*, Wolf Parade, J. Roddy Walston and the Business, CSH, Modern Baseball*, Whitney, Twin Peaks*, Temples, Pond, Preoccupations, Arkells.
Nothing on the bottom three lines.
(21/62, with like a third shared with Boston Calling or repeats)
