this one still, together with coachella, the best line up of NA festivals this year...we'll see what Lolla and ACL can do...
Different strokes for different folks. With the edition of Ryan Adams to the Shaky Knees lineup, that one's looking awfully strong with FIDLAR, J. Roddy Walston and the Business, Cloud Nothings, Pinegrove, and Anderson East. Boston Calling has the better top line, but I'll take Shaky Knees over Boston Calling for depth (especially since a handful of the more interesting BC undercard acts, like Car Seat Headrest and PUP are at Shaky Knees, too.)

Sigur Ros, Solange, and Bon Iver beat out most of what's at SK. Plus Deerhoof and RTJ.
LCD, Ryan Adams, and Pond are the only names I really wish BC got.

Pond probably gonna announce a show at The Sinclair, 5/8. It went up on Bowery Boston's website, but was taken down soon after.
I do have to say now that I have spent some time listening to both SK and BC playlists, I do enjoy more of SK's list, but there is a lot more that I am excited about at BC.
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.
I went through the Boston Calling poster and checked every act out with which I was unfamiliar on YouTube.
I put together my own personal ratings system, to see if I'm getting my money's worth and navigate stage conflicts when the festival rolls around. Everyone's mileage will certainly vary, with no two people rating the acts in the same way.
I named each category after an album by 2018 Boston Calling headliner Oasis.
THE MASTERPLAN
(A real favorite, someone you've likely seen multiple times or who you've been aching to see for the first time and whose music you carry around with you like a talisman that wards off evil spirits. You can definitely think of at least two of their songs you'd want played at your wedding or funeral.)

BE HERE NOW
(You like them, you've given serious consideration to seeing them, but end up waiting too long to pick up tickets and then the show sells out...or you've spent your concert dollars upon stronger personal favorites. Maybe you've seen them once, liked them, but didn't feel the need to catch their subsequent tour stops in town. You're definitely happy to see them in the lineup because you're probably not going to drop the money to see them headline, or see them headline for a second time.)
Car Seat Headrest Weezer Strand Of Oaks Chance The Rapper Tool Frightened Rabbit Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats Run The Jewels Sigur Ros
DEFINITELY MAYBE
(You're not going to pay money to see them headline, but if they're opening a show you're attending, you'll make sure you're there on time to catch their set. If they're doing a free outdoor radio station show around town, you're definitely there. You couldn't imagine spending money on them, though.)
Mondo Cozmo Lucy Dacus The Hotelier Hiss Golden Messenger Whitney Francis and the Lights Piebald Danny Brown Flatbush Zombies Cousin Stizz PUP Mitski Modern Baseball
WHAT'S THE STORY (MORNING GLORY)
(Six of one, half-dozen of the other. Catch them, fine. Sleep in a little bit later and miss their early set, that's just as enjoyable. Leave early to be well-rested for the following day, that's good, too. Mild personal appeal to you, but no more appealing than checking out the vendor tents and picking up free mini-granola bars there.)
Xylouris White Brandi Carlile The xx Bon Iver Mumford & Sons

Ultimately, the BE HERE NOW and DEFINITELY MAYBE categories are the sweet spot for the festival-goer. You're going to see your favorites when they come to town, anyway, so a festival delivers strong value when it enables you to catch acts you'll like, but probably won't buy tickets to see headline.
I think I'll be getting my money's worth here and I'll enjoy a lot of the acts, but I will miss the inclusion of one or two of my personal Masterplan acts, like The Replacements or My Morning Jacket. Each of their 2014 and 2015 editions had at least one act I'd count among my absolute favorites, but not last year or this year.

On that note, if you end up wanting to sell one of your days, let me know.
Highly doubtful, since they're sending out a single 3-day wristband instead of paper tickets. Even if they were doing paper tickets, it's almost certain that the good stuff -- however any of us define that -- will be spread out throughout the three days.
It's going to be nice to have two stages with "name" acts playing at the same time, giving us the same choice that other festivals have offered for years, although I'd be very surprised if I got through the three days without at least one conflict of note. (It's good in a way that I can't afford pricey Newport, RI hotels, because if I could, I would have had to choose between Jeff Tweedy, Dawes, and Hozier all playing at the same time in 2014, which would have made my head explode.)

Not sure how close you are to Boston, but commuting to NFF each day is definitely doable. I've done it every year. And not that it really matters, but the only conflict between those three was 25 mins overlap between Dawes and Hozier, and that was pre-success Hozier.
How does that conflict make your head explode yet pretty much every similar artist at BC this year earned the lowest spots on your list ?

1) Being car-free, Newport is kind of difficult to do as a daily commute. There is bus service that runs Boston to Newport and I could see going in and staying for three days, but at $300 more per night, it's still cheaper to buy a ticket to see each band I like headline in Boston.
2) It's not about style, per se, it's about how much a particular artist resonates with me. Jeff Tweedy, Taylor Goldsmith, and Hozier write songs that speak to the core of my being. Marcus Mumford and Brandi Carlile do not.
I don't know everything about all the artists so if some of the conflicts are similar artists let me know and I'll play with it.
Wow if that's what the schedule looks like I'll have almost zero conflicts. One thing I notice is that RTJ and Flatbush Zombies are at the same time, which they probably won't be, but I don't really know. Looks great otherwise. Switching Nathaniel Rateliff and Flatbush Zombies would make sense I think.

No thank you. Solange and Bon Iver are two of the most unique gets on the lineup, would be a bummer if they conflicted. A lot of people would be bummed about Solange and Chance too.

Yea I can see how that would piss people off, I haven't really been able to get into Solange, so Bon Iver -> Chance is perfect for me.

Pond probably gonna announce a show at The Sinclair, 5/8. It went up on Bowery Boston's website, but was taken down soon after.
It's one of the new Sinclair shows going on sale this week. The date is 5/7.
I saw! I live in NYC, so I'll be seeing them there. Glad they're not just sticking to fests though! They really should be playing in the dark anyways. I just wanted to see a BC crowd react to Nick Allbrook

The category titles were based upon the meaning of the words in the album titles, and not the quality of the albums. I more or less agree, although I might put Definitely Maybe first.

If you hadn't noticed, the Eaux Claires line-up dropped today and, as the other MSG/Crash Line festival, it's always instructive as to whom they're building relationships with...and who might show up next year in Boston.
Of course, the act I was most hoping to see in the Boston Calling lineup (except for a couple of long-shot reunions) is playing Eaux Claires...in a number of guises.
This is as Wilcocentric a lineup as you'd expect at Solid Sound: Wilco, Tweedy, The Autumn Defense, S. Carey & Glenn Kotche, Cup, and Quindar (all contain at least one current member of Wilco).
Plus, PAUL MOTHERQUACKING SIMON (and John Prine, for good measure.) It looks like they're not afraid to book acts that appeal to the 45+ crowd at this festival.
Also, Chance The Rapper and Danny Brown, Feist and Francis and the Lights, and a whole lot of acts I've never heard of.
So, my takeaway from this lineup is that as long as they're doing late Spring gigs next year, Wilco sounds like a lock for Boston Calling 2018. I just hope that they don't make the immediate Boston area wait nearly two a half years from their early 2016 shows before coming back to town.
In summation:
Paul Simon - Chance The Rapper - Wilco > Mumford & Sons - Chance The Rapper - Tool

If one of my best friends wasn't getting married that weekend, I would make the 10 hours drive just for Paul Simon and John Prine. Everyone else is just icing. I'm probably going to get drunk and tell them I hate them at the wedding now...
