My brother is a die-hard fan, going to the show tonight in Hampton and on Wednesday in Raleigh. I'd love to go one of the shows, just can't swing it during the middle of the week right now.
Pearl Jam canceled their Raleigh show. I stand by what they are doing, but I feel for the fans who planned to go.
I think anyone that is cancelling shows is punishing the wrong people. They're punishing their fans. They're punishing the people that would be working there that night. They're not punishing the government. The government doesn't care if a Pearl Jam show is cancelled. It's not happening often enough for the economy to really feel it. I get that they feel like they have to take a stand but I feel like they're doing it the wrong way. Play the show and donate to the cause.

I don't think it is their intention to punish anyone. I think that they just want let everyone know that the law is bullshit. I feel like it makes bigger waves to not play any shows as apposed to doing one for charity. Also as crazy as it seems, I bet it would get people to sign a petition if only to see thier favorite band again. You are right though it definitely sucks for people who wanted to see them.

I had an argument saying much of the same with people on Facebook when Bruce cancelled. Their argument basically was the artist should do anything in their power in support of the cause. I'm just not on board with that, at least when the action isn't really hurting anyone they are fighting as you said.

I'm so glad other people have this opinion as well. Especially big names like PJ and the Boss. I don't think the artist's viewpoint really matters. I wouldn't see the artist as supporting the cause by playing there. If anything you're giving more power to the state, by quitting and letting the fans that reside in that state down, at least they may have some solace in the fact that they get to see their favorite artist even though their state is fucking everything up. Me and my pops got into an argument over this shit the other day, I considered his viewpoints, but if Philadelphia did some shit that Sigur Rós didn't approve, and they canceled their show I'd be mad at Sigur Rós. I'm fucking hype right now that God answered my prayers to get Sigur Rós touring in the US again. The hype is only building more and more as each day passes, I spent the Bugatti's on the tickets and now I'm emotionally invested.
Edit: I know I'm being selfish as shit, but I don't care.

Also I know I am going to sound like a dick but why can't all the people who just had thier show canceled donate the refund of thier ticket price to the cause? I mean why do we feel like we need to get something like seeing a show or being fed to help out people? It's not like we are owed a concert from any performer and if I didn't like something going on in a state I wouldn't go to it either. I understand a lot of us can't just move states but if it motivates people to try to change this law I don't have any problem with what they are doing. Not directed at you sang and guilty of it myself. Just something I have been thinking about recently as I live in NC.
I get bands not playing in markets where they have human rights concerns. If there are repercussions from the decisions that governments make then maybe the artists can be catalysts for change.
There are the financial implications with list tax revenue, restaurant revenue, hotel revenue, etc. There is the publicity to put national eyes and pressure on state and local issues. And there is the pressure that fans can place on local officials in the wake of cancelled shows.
I agree that it would suck as a fan and I might resent the artist if it happened to me but I also respect that the artist is willing to take that risk for the greater good.
On a related note, I'm glad that Tennessee has tabled their bathroom bill. (Obviously, the spectre of Pearl Jam cancelling is low on the list of reasons why.)

We had to make a real tough call, and we had to make a call about what we would do about a situation in North Carolina. Because they’ve got a law there that broadly broadly discriminates against a whole group of people. And I can’t tell from here if you’re booing North Carolina, if you are booing us for having to decide that we are not going to play there, I would understand that too. It was a hard process because we really thought we could still play and make things right and that we could fortify all the people on the ground looking to repeal this despicable law, we thought we could take the money and give it to them and still play the show. But the reality is there’s nothing like the immense power of boycotting and [pulling?] a string, and it’s a shame because people are going to be affected who don’t deserve it, but it could be the way that ultimately is going to affect change, again we just couldn’t find it in ourselves in good conscience to cross a picket line […?]. So we apologize to those in Raleigh, we apologize to those who are going to Raleigh, we apologize to the locals who probably believe in the same things that we do. They have a reason to be pissed, and we’re pissed off too. But we gotta be pissed off at the right people and get them to change their minds because they made a mistake, a big mistake, and they can fix it. So tonight we play this one all the soldiers in the LGBT community. The comments from Ed tonight during the show.
It's almost like music fans in NC are being discriminated against, amirite?
Discrimination increases suicide risk
Transgender people in states without LGBT legal protections are at higher risk of suicide. Other studies have found that transgender people who have been discriminated against are at a higher risk of suicide. What makes this worse is that discrimination against transgender people in health care, employment, accommodations, and housing is very common. m.huffpost.com/us/entry/the-truth-about-transgend_b_8564834.html
HornMeatball, not everything is a joke. Your attempt at humor is disgusting.
The impact over time to the state of NC will be huge if the law does not get over turned. Music concerts are just the tip of the iceberg. Enough people pull on one rope in one direction things will change.
Props to PJ for standing for something. This is one of the many reasons I love them so much. Sorry to fans in NC that don't get to see PJ tomorrow but they will make it up.

When they lose the NBA All Star Weekend, that will be huge. Much bigger than a concert, the effect will be felt much more.
are there rumblings that will happen? that would be great.
hate all this for the music and sports fans and anyone in NC economically affected, but at the same time I'm happy to see bands and trade organizations doing this. maybe its the 16 year old republican in me but in some instances money and greed can actually be a driver for good.
lets remember what Patterson Hood said: George Wallace is in hell now, not because he was a racist but because he was a kiss ass politician that pandered to assholes.

ISO a single ticket for Pearl Jam at MSG on May 1st if anyone has any leads! Greenville and Columbia were incredible shows. Wish Raleigh wouldn't have gotten cancelled but maybe can catch MSG this weekend instead.
Pearl Jam was outstanding this weekend at Jazz Fest. Obviously it won't be the same set, but it was pretty great. They brought out Skerik to play during the encores of Can't You See the Real Me? and Keep on Rocking in the Free World as well as bringing Chad from the RHCP out on drums. They single-handedly are convincing me that I need to go back to Bonnaroo this year. Got the setlist off of setlist.fm and have a little more in the writeup on the jazz fest thread. But here's the song list as it stood yesterday morning:
State of Love and Trust Arms Aloft (Mescalaros cover) Mind Your Manners God's Dice Setting Forth Corduroy Nothingman In Hiding Even Flow Sirens Unthought Known Long Road Daughter Last Exit Porch Go Inside Job Given to Fly Lightning Bolt Better Man Do the Evolution Alive The Real Me Rocking in the Free World

There's discussion on Reddit about a recent bill passed in TN (it gives licensed therapists protection from civil lawsuits, criminal prosecution and sanctions by the state licensing board if they opt out of providing services for clients whose outcomes or behaviors are in conflict with the counselor's "sincerely held principles"). This law is being criticized for being anti-LGBT. After Pearl Jam pulled out of their NC show over the controversial "bathroom bill", do we think they might pull out from performing at Bonnaroo?
Bonnaroo spoke out against the bill on their Instagram, Facebook, & Twitter pages today, which yall might have seen earlier.
It's two very different scenarios, I am aware, with the biggest differences being that Bonnaroo will happen with or without Pearl Jam and it is probably much trickier to get out of such a big festival appearance. Some people seem pretty pessimistic about it on Reddit, but I don't think PJ would withdraw from this event (although I don't know too much about PJ)... thoughts?

They wont cancel, but you guys are going to get a 20 min rant from Uncle Ed.

Honestly, I hope to God that they realize Bonnaroo is more of a national event instead of a concert in a state. Also their fans who bought tickets to Bonnaroo won't be able to get a refund if they do pull out, so I think that will keep them from canceling.

I'm pretty sure Pearl Jam will drop out, which will cause a trickle down effect until Bonnaroo is Cancelled this year. **Remember, I always call it right** hahaha
