Any festival at any given year is only as good as the crop from which they can pick. Examples are Current touring schedules, availability, desire to perform, niche fitting. The big 4 US fests have clout, so the rare gets happen easier. Tiering and categorizing is pointless because the market will always be ever-changing.

So, given the number of great acts hitting the road this year, what's Bonnaroo's excuse?
I'm sure you've been at this longer than me. So think I terms of cycles
The one glaring issue I have is that this is their big 15th anniversary lineup (or so I've been led to believe). This is a "second tier festival splurging for an anniversary" lineup, not a "first tier festival splurging" lineup.

please let the anniversary talk die. Every five years they have to get 6 headliners to celebrate? The anniversary is special in and of itself if you want to believe it matters at all. I havent been every year so it doesn't make much difference to me what year it is of the festival.

I think a perfect example of the new shift in philosophy is the booking of Flosstradomus or whatever they're called. Everyone on here is in agreement that they're a terrible band, yet somehow they attract tons of people. LiveNation seems like a company that only is concerned with return numbers and completely forgoes any thought on being different and unique. I would love to see how they actually worked together on creating this lineup. Additionally, I think the increase in AC/Superfly festivals has gradually hurt Bonnaroo's lineup.
For my personal tastes, I think the headliners are great. Individual show ticket prices would probably make a GA ticket worth it cost-wise, but Roo has never been about the headliners for me. I'm always way more into the depth of the undercard shows. This year I view the HLers as 1st-tier, but the undercard as 2nd-tier (at best). It just doesn't have enough pull for me, especially if I spread the acts I initially consider as must see over the course of 4 days.
I love the Roo "experience" & know I would still find a way to have a great time if I went, but this has been the first year since 2005 where I have questioned driving across 4 states south & spending $400+/$850 for a ticket. That saddens me. Maybe in my 30's I am just not in touch w/ what the college kids are into, maybe the lineup really is shizz. Either way, I am disappointed & not planning on going because of the lineup. I listen to the untz's but am not super into them, the hiphop lacks for me, and the 2nd/3rd/4th liners do not have the draw for me.
Happy for those that love the lineup & those who might not but will go anyway. I know you'll have a great time. I just hope I love the lineup & return next year. Otherwise, it'll solidify a 2nd-tier fest designation for me flushing toilets or not. I'd shizz in a hole in the ground for a mind-blowing lineup.
Still 1st tier. Just because a festival doesn't suit one's taste doesn't mean their stock drops. Now, granted, the general reaction (here, facebook, instagram, etc) seems to be very mixed at best. One of my friends, whom is into all sorts of rock music (he loved 2013's Coachella lineup which he attended) didn't dig this year's Shaky Knees lineup whatsoever, which surprised me, nor Governor's Ball, but he liked Bottlerock and Firefly. He also HATED this year's Coachella lineup, with only 3 names sticking out to him on first quick glance... but Coachella's lineup seemed to be praised on Inforoo? People here are hating the fact that Halsey is so close to the top and using that as one of the reasons why this lineup is bad, but yet she's listed 2nd line on Coachella and their lineup is so deep and good? I thought Coachella's was bad because I thought acts like her, the 1975, and James Bay would be 3rd line at best instead of 2nd line like they are. *shrugs*

Deep down you know this isn't a decent analysis of the two lineups.
On any given year the big four never have the best four or even three lineups. Every year there's some lower level festival that's brings out a killer lineup and jumps into the top 4 in terms of lineup quality like OSL 2013, and Tier 1 drops the ball, Roo 16 and Lolla 14. If the question is "is Bonnaroo in the top 4 lineups this year" that's a definite no, and this is even with half the big four not having released their lineups. But that's not really the question what where asking is it still part of the big four. It seems in large part we've chosen big four on their cultural weight, of course these come from their drawing power, longevity, and quality. I feel like a huge factor in determining whats in the big four is the prestige that comes with headlining them, especially for bands making the jump into headliner status. The big four, and Coachella in particular, have that ability to christen bands into headliners, like Arcade Fire in 2011. If a band like Vampire Weekend where to make that jump on their next tour it would still come with more prestige to headline somewhere like Bonnaroo then Firefly or OSL. One bad year, or some would argue 2 now, won't drop Bonnaroo from this category but if this trend continues of course it eventually will, hopefully then can pick it up these coming years. And even then we might soon not have them as the Big Four. The Big Four in relation to all other festivals is way different then it was 10 or even 5 years ago, there's so much more competition and parity that sometimes the only remaining difference is that cultural weight. After a few more years some of these other rising festivals can easily make it the big 6 or 8.
Deep down you know this isn't a decent analysis of the two lineups.
Not to mention, Halsey is 11th on Bonnaroo's lineup...she's 7th on her day at Coachella.
Also, people keep missing the point, which I tried to elaborate on a page or so back. It's not that the lineup isn't "for [our] taste;" it's that the lineup is objectively bad. The Levitation lineup isn't for my taste, but it's clearly a well-curated lineup. Hell, Primavera just dropped their lineup, and a lot of what they booked really isn't my thing, but it's still clearly a fantastic lineup. Bonnaroo just booked a lazy, bad lineup, for the second year in a row.
That actually surprises me, both on the Levitation and Primavera lineups. Thought both of those would be right up your alley based on other I've seen you say you like.
But yes, completely lazy lineup thrown together by Bonnaroo.

It goes kind of hand in hand with their overall strategy. Think of it like a college. They have a new demographic every few years to market to, with the older crowd always transitioning out to other things. Bonnaroo has to keep their demo reach in terms of marketing and lineup very young, especially since it's a "destination" event that young crowds plan summer road trips around. Along with the bubble starting to come closer to popping, this is kind of making current trends the new normal.

This !!
I absolutely hate the Coachella lineup minus 1 or 2 bright spots like last shadow puppets and miike snow. I would really struggle to fill my days with shows there.

Remember how I said I would take you dancing if that whole "just wait - surprises - lineup is stacked" thing you said turned out to be true? I guess it goes without saying, but I will not be twirling you about anytime soon..

Your life is a series of sad delusions.
Moving into a great new house in April, getting married in May, honeymooning in Virgin Islands, and doing at least three festivals this summer. I need to keep deluding myself because things are pretty awesome.

At some point in there are you going to have time to give up this sad charade?

FWIW and take this with a grain of salt but I used to be in the wedding planning industry (moved to accounting a few years ago) and I still have some friends in that industry that drop me some info from time to time. Word currently is redisni's wedding's colors will be of the bright summer variety (think tangerine, orange, yellow, etc) with a high chance the venue will be outdoors. Chances are excellent the band at the reception will play lots of Motown and other old school R&B hits (if it's the band I've been told there is a brass section and every band member is mic'd for vocals, should be a great big sound). Also hearing extremely likely there will be no sit down dinner, instead just finger foods serve yourself style, definitely some kind of chicken finger item, probably a prime rib sliced to order, possibly with au gratin potatoes. Lastly hearing the wedding cake will be white icing/white cake and the groom's cake will be chocolate through and through.

Based on your past record of accuracy, I assume this actually means you're getting evicted, marrying an immigrant for a cash payment so they can get their green card, flying solo to Sandals, and attending only Gathering of the Juggalos.

for all you bitching about anything roo related, do everyone a favor and don't fucking go! go ahead and prove a point to bonnaroo by not supporting them. I didn't like the lineup last year so I simply didn't go. I like it this year and will most likely go. it's pretty damn easy. [/rant] now back to your meaningless bitching.

I'm not sure what this post is trying to accomplish. Most of the people expressing displeasure with the lineup have decided not to attend this year, so their "negativity"/"bad vibes" won't be present on the farm to ruffle your delicate feathers.
