Tenacious D is a band I will never understand the popularity of. Jack Black isn't funny, as an actor or a musician.
He was great in Orange County, but that's about it.
He's been good in a ton of shit. High Fidelity, Saving Silverman, School of Rock, Be Kind Rewind, Tropic Thunder and a lot of his various TV appearances (Mr. Show, Drunk History, Workaholics).
Let's not forget....he was also the bully in Never Ending Story 3. A classic tale.

But RatDog has a lineup that has changed pretty regularly. How does this iteration have any substantive difference from those which preceded it? It's RatDog + John Mayer.
The only two people in DeadCo that are the same are Bobby and Chimenti. But I suppose they all play the same songs, so not much substantive difference.
Ratdog will be coming back in 2016 too, apparently. lol
Yeah, it was just a joke. But if the Dead and Co lineup was touring as the Other Ones (which is what they are), they would not be commanding near the bookings they're getting now.
I don't really care, btw. The Dead are great. But LCD is not the only overhyped reunion headlining Bonnaroo.

Maybe the Grateful Dead is just Ratdog plus Phil Lesh.
and they didn't change their name. Two totally different bands.

Bc the Grateful Dead's drummers have never been in Ratdog lol

Dead & Co Explanation
Huge media attention to Grateful Dead "farewell" shows, assisted by throwing in Troy Anastasio, resulted in several farewell concerts with insane ticket demand, various celebrity appearances at the shows. Generally shows received positive reviews from critics and fans alike. All the sudden the Grateful Dead brand is fresh in people's minds, with lots of fans who got shut out of the farewell shows hungry for a live experience.
So Bobby takes Rat Dog, gets Billy and Mickey (Cause what the hell else are they going to do), and another popular name (and talented guitarist) for the Jerry spot, throw in one of the best bass players touring today and some of those keyboard guys that know all the songs anyway, rebrand Ratdog as Dead & Co, ride that Fare Thee Well demand out into arenas.
not complaining, i'm right there with the rest of the masses craving whatever Dead experience I can get.
I like LCD Soundsystem. I have all their albums and have seen them live twice. I too am doing a WTF at all their headlining festival gigs. I know they did the documentary, but I'm baffled by their headlining status.

Another, WTF. J.Cole at #4? What is that about?
Apparently we believe in him, and he thanks us for it.

And people are outraged about LCD reuniting and "cashing in" or whatever. If there was ever a blatant case of "Oh....there's money in this? Let's not finish up and we should book more shows" it would be the new Dead group.
I agree....not complaining. I'm really excited to see it. But I definitely felt a bit like "Really? After the big fanfare of "Final shows ever" they're basically going to keep it going but replace Phil and Trey (who can't/won't go on tour for various reasons)."

That Richard Linklater movie Bernie was pretty amazing. I honestly think that was the best acting role of his career.
I forgot about that. I need to re-watch it. When I started watching it I had a different idea for what the movie was and kinda zoned out/didn't give it a chance.
I can't wait for LCD and Deadco. Both shows will be highlights this year. Though I do think I would have preferred Dead with Phil and Trey but I'm pretty happy with Mayer.
LCD is one of those must see shows because I got into them way too late and then thought I wouldn't be able to see them live (at least as LCD or at a festival). So glad they got back together.
John Mayer is better than Trey and (gulp) Oteil Burbridge is better than Phil Lesh. Oteil is probably the most well-rounded, versatile bassist alive at the moment. Just my opinion.

Yea, Mayer and Oteil are top-notch. I'm excited for it. I just think I was really pumped about the Chicago lineup and wished I could have made that happen.
I've liked Mayer for a while now look forward to what he adds to the Dead songs. When he played the Love for Levon tribute he really added to the songs he played.

he's also in waterworld for like 30 seconds. top tier role and movie.
i actually didn't think they'd be headliners until the Cochella lineup came out. i was a bit surprised. i'm a huge fan though, and i never saw them live, so i'm fine with it. i'm getting the feeling that this may be the smallest crowd for a headliner yet though. the rest of this lineup is not really going to pull a ton of LCD fans
Just listen to the 3 hour and 7 minute live album "the long goodbye." It's on Spotify. Or, as stated before, watch the documentary Shut Up and Play the Hits that features the live performances from this live album. LCD Soundsystem is going to be one of the best shows of the weekend.
Yep, Coachella, Bonnaroo, and now Primavera all booked LCD Soundsystem too high...
To piggy back, you know how many people here would have been furious (Seeing a bunch of majors pull them in) if Bonnaroo dropped the ball on booking LCD this time? You can say they drop the ball on getting shows in a timely fashion but this is one of the few times you can't really argue with timeliness on a bunch of these acts. (Love em or hate em)

Same same. I had heard some of their stuff by 2010, like Dance Yrself Clean & All My Friends, but didn't get really into them until after they had already broken up. And it broke my heart to think I would never see them live.
Considering you've found the need to respond to my threads as if you are threatened by me I offer you some peace my confused counterpart. May you find peace in your restless soul.

Seriously he did a great job in Tropic Thunder, and pretty good job in Be Kind Rewind. and KILLS it in Bernie (2011)
Not to speak of Tenaciously Derivatives music really... but I get why people find them funny.. but those people need to understand just how easily that shit is annoying as fuck

While I admit I'm not super familiar with Mayer's work, beyond knowing he is a talented guitarist, I'll still say with no authority or hard evidence whatsoever that Trey is a better guitarist than Mayer.

No.. Roc Nation and it's multi-year contract with LiveNation agrees with him...
(this is one of those shows that can help "make" an artist - even if we are revolted at how high up on the line he is)

i hope you realize my post was sarcastic.
LCD is a headliner, end of story. For the idiot that started the post, my reference was that if 3 major festivals book LCD as a headliner, they are a headliner.
Although, the more LCD shows up on other major festivals, it further diminishes the "Bonnaroo did a great job booking LCD" factor. It looks more and more like LCD wanted to play several large scale festivals in different regions(west coast: Coachella, central: Bonnaroo, east coast: Panorama, Europe: Primavera), and Bonnaroo fit the bill.

Yup I know, that's why it was a piggy back -- especially with it even on Primavera's list -- I couldn't imagine the whining if they weren't on the schedule at all this year.
EDIT: Also we can hope that even though there tour "saturates" the market with them - that the energy of each venue alters there performance a bit. I can't assume that we'll be as lucky as their last show in NYC where they pulled in Shit Robot and part of Arcade Fire, but hopefully Murphy and clan want to make each of these larger performances matter. They seem pretty earnest about starting up again in a real way and not just reunion-grab the money and run.

LCD is going to be amazing, I'm just no longer giving Bonnaroo a ton of credit for getting them. It' feels like LCD had specific plans for their reunion, and Bonnaroo worked into those plans.

I hope you meant to say Reggie Watts and part of Arcade Fire. Shit Robot was easily the worst part of that show.

I respectfully disagree, after blowing me away when he opened for LCD at Terminal 5, his appearance at MSG made me ecstatic.
Also, there wasn't a single bad part of that show, so I don't know how it's possible that something could be the worst. There was no worst.
