LCD was 16th on the lineup in 2010 and they were booked way before their album This is Happening came out that May. They were already a pre-headliner at Coachella that year. So they obviously have grown in that time since. I think they would have been 7-10 if they returned to Roo in 2011. Their absence created a lot of demand, and the "reunion" angle definitely gives them a boost on festival lineups. Unfortunately, with this lineup there's not much below LCD that is similar-sounding or from their era that would draw more people to the What Stage field. Something like Death Cab, CHVRCHES or Band of Horses is the best I can come up with and those are far from perfect openers.
LCD may not quite be major festival headliner material in terms of draw, but the quality of the show will be among the highest of the weekend.
EDIT: I think it could be LCD -> J. Cole partially unopposed LN a la Stevie Wonder/Jay Z in 2010. That would definitely draw plenty of J. Cole fans waiting for a good spot.
Finally! Thank you for this excellent response. Case closed. Their show sounds great, and I look forward to it.
Really don't hope this happens, and not sure if their day is confirmed yet.... But could HONESTLY see M83 in the Caribou spot from last year..... would be tragic, but Caribou on Sunday last year was a shame, and wouldn't put it past Roo to do that again. I feel like there was another act in 2014 that should've been late night or something that also played on Sunday late afternoon.
I love that time slot tbh. Sun goes down during the course of the set. It was also one last amazing show to close out the year. However, M83 is way bigger than Caribou.
If god damn KOL can headline then LCD can absolutely headline.
Where are the hits, bro?
I mean you're right, they're a completely different class. LCD is objectively better, but when KOL headlined they were THE biggest rock band in the country, coming off an album loaded with radio hits. Same thing goes for Mumford – might not be what us Pitchfork kids think of as the best shit there is, but massive bands coming off of massive albums.
No idea how they're a headliner either. It'd be like The Civil Wars re-uniting next year and being a #4 or a #3 at mid-major festivals (and I loved the Civil Wars).
But I don't promote or run a festival and they do.. and they've been super successful at it. Beats me what makes a headliner nowadays.
^This is what I'm questioning.. A headliner at a major fest is not one who plays a great show, it's who draws the most people. How the crowd reacts is up to them. If a headliner plays to 30-50% of a capacity crowd, then they weren't headliner material.
I doubt they'll fill up the field. Not that Facebook is a great gauge at popularity, but LCD has less than 750k likes on Facebook. In comparison to other "legit" headliners:
Eminem - 92.2 million Metallica - 37.4 million Guns n Roses - 29.9 million Calvin Harris - 13.2 million Kings of Leon - 11.9 million Radiohead - 11.8 million Pearl Jam - 10.3 million The Killers - 9.6 million Kanye West - 9.5 million Kendrick Lamar - 7.6 million Florence + Machine - 5.6 million Mumford/Sons - 5.4 million The Weeknd - 5.1 million White Stripes / Jack White - 2.9 mil / 1.5 mil Arcade Fire - 2.3 million Phoenix - 1.9 million LCD Soundsystem - 727k
Comparison to smaller, pre-headliner (or small festival headliner) acts: Skrillex - 19.6 million Ellie Goulding - 13.1 million deadmau5 - 9.1 million Arctic Monkeys - 6.8 million Sia - 4.3 million The Strokes - 4.2 million Vampire Weekend - 2.2 million Beck - 1.8 million
Comparison to some undercard acts: Macklemore & Ryan Lewis - 6.5 million J Cole - 4.8 million Weezer - 3.4 million Cage The Elephant - 1.5 million M83 - 1.3 million Tame Impala - 1.1 million The Neighbourhood - 995k CHVRCHES - 659k The Civil Wars - 637k Halsey - 609k
2011 - "No Way Arcade Fire Would Headline" 2013 - "No Way Mumford and Sons Would Headline" 2014 - "No Way Jack White Would Headline" 2015 - "No Way Deadmau5/Kendick Would Headline" 2016 - "No Way Beck/Bon Iver/Vampire Weekend/The Weeknd/Any Other Artists Who Hasn't Headlined a Major Fest Would Headline (Except Chance the Rapper) LCD SOUNDSYSTEM WOULD HEADLINE."
Every year, you guys.
All of those acts were well known. LCD isn't well known beyond their hardcore fans and within their genre.

Ah, yes, I forgot festivals book HLs off of Facebook likes. Based on those statistics, looks like next year's headliners are gonna be Vin Diesel - YouTube - The Simpsons - Nutella.

I don't care how crowded their set is. I expect it to be solid and amazing. There have been headlining sets that have had huge crowds and some not so huge.
My money is on about 50/60% full. I still would tell people not to miss this show at Roo.

I think this quote kind of sums up my feelings - and Mark Twain's (I heard he loves Losing My Edge), regarding LCD Soundsystem and Facebook likes: "Lies, damned lies, and statistics."

Jack White, Arcade Fire, and Phoenix would have been significantly lower before they headlined. All established artists, but they've all gained in fans and popularity in the past 5 years.
No idea how they're a headliner either. It'd be like The Civil Wars re-uniting next year and being a #4 or a #3 at mid-major festivals (and I loved the Civil Wars).

so this might be the wrong thread for these questions, but since they were kinda being discussed earlier:
- how long does it take to get from stage to stage? - can you just walk into the pit section at a Bonnaroo show?
It really all depends on crowds and such. If there are no significant crowds, going from the Which to the What or vice versa takes somewhere between 5-10 minutes. Just kind of estimating it though, never timed it.
For pit, if the show isn't a huge one, you can just walk in. Often times for headliners and pre-headliners there's a line. But I went into the pit for My Morning Jacket last year 30 minutes before they went on with no line and I believe many others here had the same experience
