You can get from the Meadow to the Amp very quickly. The Patch stage is the only stage that takes a bit of time to get to based on last year but I understand they've made that much more accessible and no additional checkpoint so everything should be a relatively short trip this year. I think you can reasonably split sets without too much downtime.

On a less fun note, it seems like the ticket I had lined up is gonna fall through (of course I was told this the morning after they announced the sellout). If anyone knows of any extras floating around, please let me know.

Oh, man! That Thursday run of Devil Makes Three > Lettuce > Umph > Russo's Almost Dead > Umph > Russo's Almost Dead > Greensky Bluegrass for the come down looks fun. Have fun, everyone, and go see Kamasi!
Guys I can't wait! So quick question, what's the best way to keep condensation and water from building up in my tent at night? I hear that's a real problem at Hula... I'm seeing people say Damprid, but just wondering if you guys think that's the best, or if there's better options. Thanks!
Holy shit, Hulaween was amazing. Suwannee is such a beautiful park and the people and music was phenomenal. I was a little worried that I'd get tired of all the jam, but there was definitely enough variety to keep me going throughout the weekend...And I didn't step into any EDM shows once! Spirit Lake really is incredible too, what a production. I'm also a String Cheese convert now too! Definitely coming back next year. Although, I do hope they decide to bring a tiny bit more variety to the lineup. A metal band and some more indie would do this festival great... Maybe GWAR next year?
Do they usually have surveys come out after the festival? I'd like to recommend that they have a bit more variety next year. This festival has so much potential, and I think by adding a few more indie or even metal bands, and a little less jam and electronic, this fest can skyrocket.

they should NOT sell more tickets. I didn't even go this year and it was mostly because of the crowd at Hula 15. It was sooooo over sold that it made getting into the fest an absolute nightmare and it was wayyyyy more than they were prepared to handle and the crowd wasn't the most enjoyable either. Hula is solely responsible for me never returning to the Suwannee, which sucks.

How much more can it skyrocket? It sold out!
I guess skyrocket is the wrong term to use...I guess meant becoming a more serious contender in the fest landscape? Maybe try and book a more unique lineup and really push the limits of what this fest can do. This year felt right with the size of attendance (at least for me it felt right, but I have no prior knowledge of how it was years before), I just think this fest has a lot of potential to book unique acts and rare gets. I mean shit, that Benenvento/Russo Duo set was as unique and rare as you can get! I just hope they try and book more things like that going forward...

I went to 15, and have been to 16 and 17 since. They really didn't know what they were getting themselves into in 15 and def oversold, that paired with 1 (maybe 2, I can't remember what was in Spirit Lake back then) less stage from the last 2 years, definitely created a huge cluster. I remember it being packed on the street at Odezsa and having to stand on the otherside of it near the spirit lake entrance.
The last 2 years they've definitely put a lot of effort into crowd control and even with the "sell out" this year, it felt a lot better managed than even last year.
I'd suggest trying to go back if the lineup tickles your fancy. I think the idea of them releasing tickets before the lineup will keep the Suwannee regulars there and curtail the "whoever else is headlining" crowd some.
I 100% thought the BN crowd was going to cause issues but it was another great weekend there without issue.

Oh shoot, that's what I meant to ask about! Did anyone have any problems with the bass heads? I haven't heard a single story from any of my friends about even one shitty interaction. I'm glad that they have figured out where to cap the ticket sales and how to better manage the crowds (more stages, activities, etc.) and I think I won go back if the lineup were more diverse. But, I genuinely don't want that to happen because that's not what the Suwannee is about. I LOVE that the fest intentionally keeps its roots in jam because it was originally almost all %100 percent jam and that's how the Suwannee has always swayed. Because of that, the fests there have always had a far better crowd than most festivals (similar to the old bonnaroo crowds.) I think they have found a sweet spot in diversity/staying true to the roots that gets a good mix now but if they diversify any more, it won't feel like a Suwannee fest. Despite that that would be better for me musically, I don't want to see too many of the big city folks in the Suwannee. The funny part is that I doubt I will be back to Hula is the closeness to III Points (which is like as industrial and urban as a fest can be) and I just really don't Suwannee being able to keep its typical crowd and simultaneously beat the quality of iii pont's lineup)

I almost didn't make it to this fest. I got married 2 weeks beforehand, was on honeymoon 9 days, and only came back to work for 3 days before taking another vacation to go to Hula. Thanks to my awesome boss for allowing this to happen. What a weekend it was. I had such a great time.
I love seeing this festival grow. While I don't much care for the increased crowding and increasing overlaps/conflicts, the money they're putting into production is incredible.
Spirit Lake is such an amazing psychedelic playground. I would've payed admission just to spend my weekend in there. Sometimes it was hard to pull myself away to get to sets I wanted to see.
I did notice an increased EDM-ification of the crowd since I last attended. I don't love it, but I'm also not one to get my panties in a twist about it. It was still just a bunch of people having a good time.
I'm one of the pro-Bassnectar guys and I personally loved his set. I half expected him to do a chill, spacey, downtempo set to try to win over some of the hippies angry about his booking. His set was loud, harsh, and dirty AF though. I personally loved it. I loved all the Jungle/DnB at the beginning, and some of the oldschool hip hop vibes throughout. Personally it was my favorite set of the weekend, but String Cheese Incident was a VERY close 2nd.
I almost always seem to forget how fun SCI shows are. I saw at least part of every single set this weekend. On Saturday we set up a shade canopy at the back of the meadow and just chilled all day to their sets. For sake of diversity I had planned to see Space Jesus on Sunday, as by this point I'd already seen 6 Cheese sets. I decided to start with 30 min of Cheese. I couldn't walk away though. I kept negotiating with myself "ok 45 min cheese, 45 min SJ". 15 mins go by and then it's "Ok I'll just catch the last 30 min" I finally started walking over. I made it about halfway and could hear a bit of cheese and the bass from Space Jesus, and my decision became clear. I couldn't miss SCI. Sunday's 2nd set was my favorite Cheese set of the weekend, and nearly my favorite set of the festival overall. I'm really glad I stayed.
I had a lot of fun at Griz but overall his set was kind of forgettable. I'm a huge fan of his too. I loved his old glitch hop sounds on 'End of the World Party', his dubsteppy stuff on Mad Liberation, and I absolutely loved his mixing of funk, psychedlic guitar, and glitchy electonic sounds on Rebel Era. I welcomed his transition to Nu Funk on 'Say it Loud', but he started to lose me with his last LP. I just can't get into 'Good will Prevail'. I was dissapointed most of his set was this LP, or this style, but man did I have fun getting down to "Dance with me" when he played that.
My only complaint is.. well this would go for any festival, maybe I'm old and grumpy now but some dudes need to cool it on the drugs. I tried some psychedelics and molly, etc in years past and decided years ago it's not for me. Too overstimulating, and often lead to freakouts for me. I don't mind people using drugs but I hate there seems to be this expectation that everyone should be on hard drugs at festivals. And some people just not handling themselves. At Run the Jewels my wife and I were having SUCH a good time, then the dude in front of us black out, hit the dirt. My wife went to help him up and his eyes were rolled into the back of his head. He wasn't there. After a min he opened his eyes and stood up, then bit the dust again. Someone he was with helped him out of the crowd. It really killed the vibe for my wife and I.

Oh no, I defintely agree with there. The lineup was perfect for my taste honestly and I loved seeing all the older hippies and jam crowd. I really enjoyed myself this year and definitely will be back next year. I can just only hope they bring a tiny bit more indie and maybe a metal band. Just to really round out the lineup...Either way tho, the fest seemed VERY well organized and not once did I feel packed. Also, the bassheads at this event were waaaaayyyyy better than the ones at Okeechobee. Those guys sucked.

Great explanation, Laggy. Being my first hulaween and experience with String Cheese, I had a magical time and I can't wait to attend next year. But I agree, people need to chill on the hard drugs...I got drunk the whole weekend and smoked some grass, and while I would have loved to maybe rolled, it wasn't necessary. But to each their own, as long as you're safe then that's all that matters. Unfortunately some people aren't "safe" about drug use. Also, I had no problem with the amount of EDM and electronic at this festival, but I hope they don't skew more towards that in the future. I felt like this year was the perfect amount to make that crowd happy. Also, who else catched Acoustic Syndicate and Jon Stickley Trio late nights? I love that suwannee had those types of bands late night and I sincerely hope they continue to do that next year as well.

the only reason I haven’t made it out to Hulaween is I literally know 22 people who went and they all were coked out, in a k whole, are sassed out the whole time. And it just seems like everyone’s there for the drugs rather than the music. Half those people I asked how certain people were all they could say was “eh I don’t remember, but that K man, shit was awesome”. So mostly my “friends” have been the only reason I haven’t made it to this fest grounds yet. Might do Wanne instead before hula, cause I hear about how beautiful it is there.

Disappointing that again Hula will conflict with Voodoo. One of these years hopefully they will be on opposite weekends of Halloween so I can go, but I’m not holding my breath. Looks like another year for me to watch sets on YouTube after the fact. Can’t win em all I guess.
