Also might be absolutely nothing, but does anyone think the "Allow us to introduce ourselves" might hint to Jay-Z?
And that joke they have on their website (I forget exactly where) involves him (and Beyoncé & Solange)
Yeah I see it. It's on the info page and says: "18. Random Bad Joke Why didn’t Beyonce get injured in the Jay-Z/Solange elevator fight? Because she moved “to the left, to the left”."
Must See 2018 List: 1. Drake 2. The Cure 3. David Byrne 4. King Krule 5. Moses Sumney 6. Dua Lipa 7. Mount Kimbie 8. Perfume Genius 9. Yaeji 10. Big Thief
On the 10,000 Days promo tour they did two nights at City Center (theater typically reserved for plays/classical music performances I believe) in 2006. Otherwise, all other dates have been in NJ and LI (Izod Center 2x, Nassau Coliseum, All Points West in Liberty State Park).
I seem to recall either from the Reddit AMA last year or Launchpad in the 2016 thread saying they considered Tool for 2016 but they "Didn't fit the demo" so I'm curious what changed as the band is now another year older and thus even less relevant for the younger crowd. That being said, I've always been a fan so I'm excited.

So I'm 24 and consider myself a big fan of alt rock and music in general.
AF/RH/PJ/RHCP/FF/MUSE/BRUCE/STK/KILL/LCD/QOTSA/NIN/SGRD just some headliners I'm hugeee fans of. And of course a ton of newer and older undercard acts as well. I don't really like or get EDM.
I say this because I can't name a single song from Tool. I know of them, mostly from boards like this and speculation from festivals. But their music is literally nowhere to be found. It's not on Spotify or Apple, it's not on any major soundtrack, not on Sirius. I'm sure they're great, but if someone like me who considers themselves well educated in Rock music doesn't know them, I just don't see how they are a draw for a Gov Ball audience that I already consider myself a bit of rock music dinosaur at.
It's a young crowd usually, the majority of whom cater more to the poppy/EDM/hip-hop side of things. Maybe I'm underestimating Tool's fanbase, but I think if they put a popular act opposite Tool you might see more people at that show across the park. Which makes it a really uswise decision considering how expensive Tool seems to be.

Oh no....Tool will be packed as hell. They don't tour often, he'll on their most recent tour they did less than 20 total dates. They definitely don't appeal to a younger crowd, but Tool won't have the small turnout that LCD did. Would make more sense at Chella, Lolla, or Riot. However, I think GB will get some strong sales from this booking alone based on rarity and most likely exclusivity from other fests.

It's just you. Not sure how you missed Tool if you're into those other bands.

He said it right there in the post, he's 24 and their music isn't on streaming services and rarely on the radio. I'm sure if he spent a few bucks on their albums he'd like it, but Tool ain't exactly making it easy for new fans.

Tool is on the radio. I know it's been 10 years since they've put out anything, but I still hear them pretty regularly whenever I listen to radio.

If you're 24 and live in the area, there has basically not been a station that plays Tool for nearly a decade so I can understand how someone that age would not be familiar.
To add to the poster above: I am 27 and consider myself pretty much in tune with the festival scene and have gone to countless rock acts. I've seen (and listen to) Sir Paul, RHCP, Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen, Green Day, The Cure, At The Drive In, Strokes, etc etc etc.....
I have never heard a Tool song in my entire life, and I couldn't point one out to you.

I mean I'm 25 and can't believe someone who likes the kind of music that he says he does has never heard of tool. They were all over the radio back when I was younger and have a few songs that I thought everyone knew.

"I dont know them, so they must suck."
I literally said "I'm sure they're great". And I look forward to giving them a chance and seeing if I like them as an act. It's encouraging that Gov Ball is still trying to think outside the box and make inspired headliner selections instead of saying "Oh lets just get Drake or Kings again".
I wasn't trying to make a point that "they suck because the kidz' don't know them" - I was just saying it will be genuinely interesting to see what happens for a Fest booking a band at #1 who has been a total ghost to a whole generation who happens to be there main target customers.

Well if you like Billy Joel I'm sure you'll dig Tool.

I think a lot of people are going to show up because of Tool that wouldn't normally attend Gov Ball. I also think the fest is enough of a mainstay that a lot of those kids will show up regardless. Also bare in mind they have conflicting headliners. I am sure they will counter program Tool with an act that skews toward the younger crowd. Tool are great live and haven't played in NYC proper in forever. Itll be a really cool show; I am excited.

I'm excited though Maynard unfortunately isn't able to sing like he did back during their peak (not that I blame him, dude is turning 53 in 2017!) Hopefully they do some of the more rare songs they've been doing. Also, like you said, I'm sure there will be a hip-hop/EDM/pop-leaning act playing at the same time for the younger who crowd who, if it's a big enough name, will likely outdraw Tool at this festival.

I think that one of the problems with this fest (at least to me) is that it was skewing a little toooo young with no variation for the older (25-35) crowd. Tool will bring people in to see them and only them with no care for the undercard
