Really fun cage set. Really fun cage set Was second or third barrier. Huge anti-shout out to all of the tool fans who spent the entire set looking pissed off
tool fans are the worst
High testosterone crowd of total self proclaimed alpha males sporting neckbeards vapes and fedoras.
So my wrap up for this thing is first of all after coming in 2013 where a day was canceled due to a ridiculous amount of rain and coming in 2016 where a day was just ridiculously canceled it was nice to have a full three days
This thing remains ridiculously crowded and a logistical nightmare. It's also way the hell over stocked with people who have no idea what they're doing at a festival but who do look very good in cut off shorts.
The lineup was definitely not for me this year and I wasn't going to come except for the live nation pass. I mean I think they do a good job of getting a divorce lineup but for me all that means is 50% of the acts are out immediately so unless I really like the remaining 50% it's tough. And a lot of that remaining 50% was this year's festival whores so there wasn't that much unique stuff
Still the rain held and the event itself was pretty good I thought all things considered but def behind shaky knees and Boston calling
Best stuff - Lorde and I can't believe I just said that - the head and the heart - first time - Car seat headrest - The best of the festival sets that I have seen them this year - Cage - The best of the festival sets that I have seen them this year - Bleachers - new stuff and Jack Antonoff trying to win festival MVP by showing up for a couple of songs with Lorde - Chance - Phoenix - bizarrely frontloaded set - Royal Blood - I feel like this was lacking the energy from when I saw them the first time - Mondo Cozmo - I enjoyed them but they will definitely be opening for Nickelback in the next 18 months
Best looking crowd Cage the elephant Worst looking crowd for the second straight weekend Tool
The VIP area was PACKED for Tool. Night and day compared to Phoenix which was pretty sparse. Not sure why they didn't give Gambino the headlining slot on Sat.

Day 3 thoughts, I'll post a fest top 10 later today. So maybe it's because my first real fest was Firefly, which has unopposed headliners, but all the talk of how over crowded the island gets I never felt at anytime except during Chance, which was just ridiculous. Other than that I thought this fest was so well run, the ferry line's a bitch, but hey put that many people on an island I don't see a way to fix it, and I've had way worse experiences leaving festivals. The weather sucked a little today, but I also think it kept some of the "be there just to be seen crowd at home" which was nice. Onto the sets, Air was everything I could've wanted more, just wow. I feel really bad for all the basic bitches at Logic who missed that set (not that I wanted them their the crowd was perfect). Didn't stick around for Tool, two weekends of festing in a row took a toll on me. I thought Royal Blood, who I love, was really weak yesterday they're usually so high energy, and they just weren't yesterday.
Set Ranking 1)Air 2) The Avalanches 3)Parquet Courts 4)Mondo Cozmo 5)Royal Blood 6) Ron Gallo 7)The Orwells 8)Warpaint 9)Phantogram
he/they '12 - Firefly '13 - Firefly, Made In America '14 - Firefly, Made In America '15 - Mountain Jam (Sunday), Firefly, Pitchfork, Made In America '16 - Boston Calling, Firefly, Osheaga, Made In America, Roots Picnic NYC '17 - Boston Calling, Gov Ball, Firefly (Sunday), Pitchfork, Day For Night '18 - Boston Calling, Mountain Jam, Osheaga '19 - Form, Firefly (Sunday) '22 - Boston Calling, Firefly '24 - Solid Sound, Soundside
When I was leaving Cage a Tool fan yelled at me "That's right, get out!" And I got really mad because I was going to Air in between Cage and Tool. Sorry I let you get slightly closer for your band so I don't take up space in a crowd for a band I'm only a little familiar with. Not as bad as GNR or Metallica fans but he respectful of fans of other bands who are being respectful to your music taste

Founders books really well for a diverse list of talent with the intention of splitting up crowds. With that being said, when I saw the Marshmello crowd, and how there were clearly so many Marshmello stans, I was pretty bummed that they still felt the need to Oppose Childish and Phoenix. Marshmello v Childish and Phoenix v Wu Tang, would have still split up the crowd enough.
When I was leaving Cage a Tool fan yelled at me "That's right, get out!" And I got really mad because I was going to Air in between Cage and Tool. This is funny because I've had 2 different negative experiences with going to see bands that were playing before CTE. I went to see one of my favorite bands, As Tall As Lions open for them and their crowd was the most rude I've ever witnessed. They were talking loudly and yelling at/ mocking the band. I drove 90 min. to see this band play for 45 min. Then at Sweetwater 420 we went to see Primus and CTE were playing after them. We were just trying to get out of the crowd and all the asshole so that were trying to get closer for CTE wouldn't even let us through without giving an attitude. We ended up having to basically push our way out of there. So I hold this against CTE and go out of my way to never see them.
I think yesterday was one of my favorite days of music ever.
Warpaint (they absolutely blew me away) Air (probably going to see them again in Boston tonight) Avalanches Tool (biased because I saw them last weekend but still incredible) Phantogram Zane Lowe

Sad to hear! Sorry about that. I promise we are not all awful lol. I think it's because they attract more of a teen crowd than a die hard crowd. I see no sense in insulting someone's music taste when they are literally letting you get closer to the band you want to see for a few seconds of discomfort while you squeeze your way out

Ah was that the 2010 tour? I saw that at Bowery. Great show and both CTE and ATAL were excellent.

Yesterday was my favorite day musically. But I felt like I had way more fun on Friday and Saturday. Probably a mixture of me being less exhausted, the brighter weather, and I felt like the crowds were a little more fun and livelier. Just felt like the folks who came Fri and Sat were all smiles and looking to have a good time. Yesterday not so much...
I was up front for most shows; and whats really surprising is that given who came yesterday; I thought A$AP Ferg and Wu Tang had bigger mosh pits than Tool. I also thought Royal Blood sounded great but the crowd wasnt reacting at all. Ah well. Still a great time.
1. Avalanches at BK Bowl 2. Childish Gambino 3. Air 4. Lorde 5. Chance the Rapper 6. Rufus Du Sol 7. Wu Tang Clan 8. Tool 9. Car Seat Headrest 10. Phantogram

Demographic was noticeably different on Sun vs Fri and Sat. Also Air were great, crowd was small though.

Yea, I didn't stay to see CTE. I've been in the area of them playing at least 5 times and never watched them.
Surprised to hear Cage The Elephant has that kind of crowd, I mean they usually pull a large amount of people for their shows (festival or not) but I never imagine they would be obnoxious and/or disrespectful. I've seen them 3 or 4 time both at festivals and other shows and never experienced that.
Been going to this fest since it became a 3 day event. My impressions: The Good: Music diversity and counter programming for the most part allowed me to avoid the (super) young crowd, food choices are always spot on, the 21+ area was a nice touch, lines for food were not too bad if you knew when to go, plenty of water stations, security lines were extremely effective and efficient each day, speaking of security I loved hearing they confiscated over 300 fake IDs each day (underage drunk kids can and will ruin sets)
The Bad: Although the counter programming was great each day the Phoenix/Gambino conflict was not only very difficult but I think double the amount of people were at Gambino than Phoenix so their stage setups should have been reversed (w/Gambino on Main Stage) or preferably not overlap at all, it will never happen but an age limit would be nice with soooo many (very) young kids, the Super VIP Cabana set up in front of the GovBall stage is so elitist it borders on ridiculous
Overall so happy the weather held out. The negatives I pick out will likely never get fixed and they don't have to be. I have heard some problems with sound at some stages but I did not really experience that. At the age of 33 I can't do a full 3 days (from noon - 11 pm) but will happily return each year as long as the line ups draw me in

Glad to hear you had a good time. VIP is 21+ and worth it to watch shows without as many obnoxious kids. Might be something to consider for next year or Meadows.

I only went on Sunday, but that was my best Gov Ball experience yet. Went the entire weekend in 2014, a Sunday in 2015, and the entire weekend last year. I was about ready to give up after how sloppy last year was, but yesterday was so nice and laid back. Relatively speaking, it was empty. I couldn't believe it after last year, but I guess Tool along with a more mature lineup and meh weather chased away a lot of the younger crowd. No lines for food or the portapotties at all which was nice after Boston Calling last weekend.
Zane Lowe > Parquet Courts > Warpaint (perfect for the gloomy weather) > Mac DeMarco (after seeing him at various fests I finally get it) > Avalanches (not Coachella sunset excellent, but Gov ball got a somewhat different show so it was rad) > Phantogram (not a fan but enjoyed it) > Air (everything I wanted. Can't wait for their Boston show tonight)
I was honestly surprised by how small the Tool crowd was. Was it just really packed up front or did people just not turn up? I was baffled, seemed like they had a bigger crowd at BC but it might have just seemed like that because of their squashed layout.
What did yall think of the layout? Any thing you think they can do better not pertaining to music or obnoxious trens?
I liked that the record store/meet and greet tent was between the Honda and Big Apple. Made meeting Car Seat Headrest (without buying anything) tolerable. Sound bleed was kinda rough, especially during Air

I think they're doing all they can. The Honda Stage sound was really improved, smart idea to use the Meadows Stage.
I wish they would put down Turf in the front of the Main Stage though. The grass is so nice in that area, and the switch to pavement is such a stark contrast.
This fest was fantastic - a great way to kick off festival season for me. As many have said, it felt like two different fests, at least ppl-wise between Fri/Sat and Sun. But for the most part that didn't matter in the experience of watching sets.
Somehow this was my first Gov Ball so some of the thoughts below might not be anything new.
Really liked "Best Kept Secret" area - wish more fests would do something like this - especially on Sunday it had the VIP feel to an area even though I went GA.
I now see what all of you are talking about in regards to the pavement at main stage. Saturday I was there for awhile during the day, and definitely felt it around mid-day.
My only Tool-fan related complaint was this one girl at Phantogram with a couple of her friends who was giving the band the finger throughout multiple songs, at every time Sarah would look our direction - and also at her friends when they would sing along or dance to them. Keep in mind, Phantogram wasn't even playing at the same stage as Tool haha.
Having said that, there were noticeably quite a few folks in Tool shirts groovin to Avalanches/Air/Phantogram so that was cool, kind of what diverse festival lineups are all about.
Favorite sets: 1. Tool - their fans can suck at times, but love the band 1a. Childish Gambino - simply incredible 2. Chance - Even better than when I saw him at MIA last year, so I'm looking forward to seeing him a couple more times this year. 3. The Avalanches - BK Bowl set was incredible, actual set was fun too, though I wasn't as up front as I'd like to have been. 4. Royal Blood 5. Air 6. Warpaint - glad I finally saw them - think there were some sound issues towards the end where I was, but nonetheless a great set 7. Car Seat Headrest 8. Bleachers 9. Phantogram - enjoyed that they played more older stuff then other festival sets this trek 10. Beach House - Idk I feel like this set was "just ok" for them
Sunday weather-wise felt perfect to me, the rain was never really too strong to be a hindrance and the rest of the day felt comfortably cool.
Local natives, avalanches, air, tool, parquet courts, beach house Were all amazing. I live in Long island so getting in for orwells and CSR didn't happen for me. Too many kids the chance day, but it was actually worse in the train ride in than inside the festival. I saw more underaged passed out kids and IDs taken on Friday and Saturday than I have in a year of going to fests. Ferry was brutal Friday afternoon, but after that was good. Tacos in the 21+area were amazing. Also they fixed a bunch of muddy spots day to day, which was cool.
What did yall think of the layout? Any thing you think they can do better not pertaining to music or obnoxious teens?
In the 21+ areas....it'd be nice if they could somehow have a screen for the stages they are near....but not sure those Honda/Big Apple sets get recorded/streamed to the side screens. I liked those spots but would have preferred seeing the stages a bit more.
Overall getting back and forth it pretty easy for most of the day. Was able to bounce between the two stages and the main stage no problem.
Appreciated the free swag from a lot of the vendors. I didn't take stuff from all of them but I know my buddy especially liked getting free Subway mini-sandwiches and then walking over to the Vitamin water/coke sponsors and getting free drinks from there.
Side-question: Who was allowed up in the Rayban deck/viewing thing? The website makes it sound like anyone can go up (unlike the Citi viewing area for Citi-card people) but I couldn't get a straight answer. Was just told "it's a different wristband". I wanted that to be a little more clear on the website.

I've also been to Tool shows where everyone around me has been kind and sociable and not a weird dork-bro
