Also about logistics...
This was my first year using the 103rd Footbridge and East Entrance Gate and WOW does it make a difference. The walking bridge is really enjoyable, not crowded, and the walk on Randall's Island is really nice. All in all it took like 30 minutes to get off the Island and made so much of a difference. It's Gov Ball's best kept secret.
I was up against the sound board, the tool fans were fun. But if you aren't a big tool fan, having to stand next to us while we yell lyrics at each other is probably annoying a fuck.

This is funny because I've had 2 different negative experiences with going to see bands that were playing before CTE. I went to see one of my favorite bands, As Tall As Lions open for them and their crowd was the most rude I've ever witnessed. They were talking loudly and yelling at/ mocking the band. I drove 90 min. to see this band play for 45 min. Then at Sweetwater 420 we went to see Primus and CTE were playing after them. We were just trying to get out of the crowd and all the asshole so that were trying to get closer for CTE wouldn't even let us through without giving an attitude. We ended up having to basically push our way out of there. So I hold this against CTE and go out of my way to never see them.
Sad to hear! Sorry about that. I promise we are not all awful lol. I think it's because they attract more of a teen crowd than a die hard crowd. I see no sense in insulting someone's music taste when they are literally letting you get closer to the band you want to see for a few seconds of discomfort while you squeeze your way out
I got you. I started yelling at the tool fans on my way out. But that had nothing to do with my love for CTE and everything to do with my love for live music that's fun. Looking at a bunch of people who appear to be pissed off is every bit as distracting as the 18 year old chicks talking during the show. Same thing in Boston last week.

I do wonder if Founders is concerned about the growing number of young kids at Gov Ball now.
I know the answer is most likely no, and that ticket sales rule everything. And that they'll use their typical excuse during the AMA and say "Well we became passionate about live music by going to festivals when we were in high school so we'd hate to take that away from this generation" but it was very obnoxious this weekend. It's just weird to be in your early 20's and feel old at this. I got asked like 6 times for my 21+ wristband by little bros in basketball jerseys and very young girls.
I spoke to a volunteer at the beer stand early on Saturday who said that his stand had already confiscated over 150 Fake ID's. At some point you need to address the problem somehow or else it's going to become the kiddie NYC festival to a more mature Panorama.
I'm excited for the Meadows with Gorillaz and a strong undercard but now I'm a bit terrified of what Future/Migos is going to bring in.
What did yall think of the layout? Any thing you think they can do better not pertaining to music or obnoxious teens?
Been seeing large concerts at Randalls Island since 2000 (Warped Tour) and I don't think Gov Ball could do any better given the limited layout. Unless they somehow allow people to hang out in the stadium and set up more food vendors/drink/portable shitters there but I imagine the park likely wouldn't allow that. I definitely think, past a certain age, springing for the VIP is worth it. My one issue with the VIP area is that, for the Bacardi stage, it's such a sharp cut-off that unless you're right against the rail in the VIP, 1/3 of the stage is cut off (i.e. a member of Rufus Du Sol was completely out of view for me).
I too get weary of the "young kids" but I honestly can't tell how old they are any more so when I see a drunk "kid" they could be 17 or 23. Music festivals are supposed to be for young people to party (within reason) so that never bothers me. Gets a bit tricky as I get older and attend these things with my wife but that's my issue, not the festival's.
Counter-programming wise, I think there could have been a few smarter decisions. As more of an "indie" guy, it was frustrating on Sun that Franz Ferdinand was up against The Avalanches while, on the flip side, also seemed like a waste to have TWO DJ/producer sets (Zane Low vs. EDEN) going on at the same time earlier. Like most have said, Gambino likely should have been on the main stage, maybe before Phoenix out of respect allowing Phoenix to play against someone like Marshmello or Wu-Tang. I know contract demands might have prevented this and it's also hard to tell how popular some bands still are.
All in all, had a great time. 6th year in a row going and will continue to attend in years to come.

Eh, I think it all depends on the talent booked. Remember the Bamboozle festival held in NJ? That always predominantly a 14-23 aged crowd. They can never fully stop underage drinking though, to be fair, by "underage", I'm most concerned about kids in HS. While most college kids aren't technically legal, they tend to have at least had SOME experience with alcohol and begun to learn how to pace themselves. I saw a bunch of kids practically dying on the ground by like 3pm but that's no fault of the festivals. We were all fairly frisked and they ID'd pretty strictly. Probably will just need to have staff patrolling the grounds/sets to police more.

Saw Air again tonight. Spectacular of course.
BUT the fucking crowd wouldn't shut the fuck up again, which is why I even bought a ticket for tonight after experiencing last night's surreal but marred by loud talkers set. Fuck people and their blatant ignorance of how to conduct themselves at shows. At one point I turned to a guy who was shouting at his friend about their other friends who were not present and said "dude, shut up. stop talking."
He didn't hear me over the sound of his own voice.
If you paid for a nice meal, how would you feel if I pushed it off the table or took a little bite without asking? I had that realization tonight about the comparison, and it's basically the same shit.
Rant over. Vagabond out.
Still working on my rankings for the weekend, and continue to feel great and thankful that I went.
One big pet peeve I had about all the kids was how many times I got called sir when someone was trying to scam me into buying them a drink. Making me feel old gets you no where

That's just manners
Calling someone sir, then asking them to buy you a drink almost seems like entrapment
1. Gambino 2. Cage 3. Danny Brown 4. Mark Ronson vs. Kevin Parker 5. Lorde 6. Car Seat Headrest 7. Air 8. Chance the Rapper 9. Charles Bradley 10. A$AP Ferg

Don't sweat it, enthusiasm like that tends to be contagious. At least, that's how I experience music as a non-fan if I'm surrounded by people who are really into it.

Fuck those fucking people, it's becoming a fucking epidemic. Good job on at least speaking up. I like your analogy too, and will steal it.

Sorry you had to deal with that, but why not just move to a different spot? I was at the show too, maybe a few rows back to the right, and only experienced a few minutes of talking. It was probably one of the better crowds I've experienced at the Royale which, to be fair, isn't saying much.
I couldn't make the fest this year, but just wanted to comment on VIP as a way to get away from the drunk teenage crowd.
I did general admission in 2015 and VIP last year. There are definitely perks to the VIP area, but some downsides too. For some of the shows from the VIP area, it was obvious that a lot of fans paid $700+ to talk over music in the background. The crowd for M83 im 2016 was terrible, either talking up near the stage or bored if you moved farther back. I wish I had gone in the general admission area for that set, it looked like people were paying attention to the show and having a great time. My roommate also said the talkers were godawful during Of Monsters and Men in the VIP area.
You do get away from the drunken teenagers in VIP. I didn't find them to be especially obnoxious in the past, but from the lineup this year it would make sense if the crowd skewed younger.
Glad most people had a great time again. It's a great time of year temperature wise for a fest in NYC.
How was Ronson vs Parker at the fest? Thats the only set I regret missing. Decided to regroup and grab prime real estate for Gambino instead.
Pretty boring.. stayed for most of it.. DJ set that played psych rock at the end. I was feeling good at the time though so it was good background music
Avalanches was fantastic.. so much damn fun. We were able to get close and i was SO psyched to see them set up for a full band. I was expecting another DJ set

I'm wondering this as well. My friend who went said it was awful but I'd like to hear some other opinions.
Didn't see them at the fest, but Output was pretty meh and I'm a huge Tame Impala fan. Ronson is, surprisingly, not a very good DJ. Either that or he dumbed down his usual set. Most of it was the stuff you'd usually hear bumping literally anywhere, stuff like Kendrick and Kanye who I both love but don't need to spend $20 to hear at a club.
Kev dropped some cool stuff including remixes of Let It Happen, The Less I Know The Better, Elephant vs. Black Skinhead (didn't hear this at Output, but this remix has been going around since Lonerism came out) and even pulled up a jam that Tame used to do back in 2012 mixed with a rap (couldn't tell if it was new or just a remix), but this was like maybe ten to twenty minutes total out of the hour and a half we were there. Apparently they played a new SZA collab too. Doubt their Gov Ball set was any different.

Considered that immediately, but I'm a fairly short and had a great spot right behind the soundboard that I didn't want to give up. If I move then the talkers win.

I was a bit disappointed. It was pretty generic which is a shame considering the two dudes in question. I also for some reason was expecting Kevin Parker to sing the Tame Impala parts of the set live, with Ronson DJ-ing over it, which didnt happen.

As another shorty, I feel you. Royale is a double bummer for shorter peeps like us too.

I had fun during it. I read a bunch of reviews on here so I went in knowing that it was just them playing hip-hop, daffodils, and some cool Tame remixes on a laptop. It definitely wasn't anything special, but it was during that nice sunset time of day so I liked it. All Kevin did really was get on the mic and say hi to the crowd.
I stayed for about 45 minutes until we left to get a good spot for Phoenix (not sure we needed to do that looking back now lol).
Must See 2018 List: 1. Drake 2. The Cure 3. David Byrne 4. King Krule 5. Moses Sumney 6. Dua Lipa 7. Mount Kimbie 8. Perfume Genius 9. Yaeji 10. Big Thief
Also thought Nancy from LCD had a nice set before Lorde. And although it wasnt entirely a DJ set; Rufus Du Sol killed it.
I think Gov Ball should take a page out of Pano's book and snag stuff like Theo Parrish, Omar-S, Motor City Drum Ensemble, etc. Perhaps some bigger names like Solomun, Richie Hawtin, Maceo Plex, etc.
