I didn't go to the set, I wanted to stay for all of OTT, but my friends who went said it was weird. It was split up by a set with Usher and the Roots, a set with a DJ, and a set with some different rappers coming out. Kind of odd, and they said it should have been called Usher, The Roots and friends. Not Usher and The Roots. My guess is that they had a 2 hour and 15 minute set, but not enough material for that time, so they had to fill with other stuff.
The best sets of the weekend for me were Vulfpeck, Sturgill Simpson, BADBADNOTGOOD, Okeechobee Gospel Soul Experience with the Blind Boys of Alabama TAUK, and Omar S.
How was Usher & The Roots, did they get much of a crowd?
Oldest said that it was a decent crowd but it was pretty sparse by the end. I guess a lot of people have to blow out and then others probably went to whatever else was still going. He said Griz, Logic, Perpetual Groove were all notable for him.
"Nectar and PL was good. Powwow was good, we were there most of the set. Usher and the Roots was good (caught the first and last parts). Ott was freaky like every other time and was doing live edit. P'funk was also pretty awesome and were rocking out toward the end. Ganja White Knight with Boogie T was good, and the Griz/12th Planet/Snails camp set with the kerosene setup or whatever would shoot flames up. That was about 3-5:30am Saturday morning.
Did anyone see the Anderson Paak show? That guy is a hell of a performer. I was not expecting that show to be so incredible
After that performance I can definitely see him at the top soon, that really was a great way to end the Weekend, Paak > Pretty Lights > Nightmares on Wax.
I completely agree with what joey said. I loved that I could get to the front for every non EDM and Rap set. I really hope it continues to have some music other than those, even though a huge chunk of the attendees were douche noozle party boys / srat girls and just random druggies. I had a great time at this festival aside from some of the attendees. solid 9.5/10
Honestly, it was the normal festival crowd. Lots of weirdos(the good kinds) and druggies, greek folks, and wooks. I shouldn't have made the whole fest seem like it was filled with assholes, but it did seem like there were a lot of shitty people there. Espacially at the EDM and rap centric shows. Most of the shows I went too tho had wonderful people you usually want to see at a fest. I'm sure if they don't book Nectar next year, a lot of these issues will go away.

The Usher and the Roots set was fun enough, but I think I'd rather see them both separately rather than together. The songs would kind of drag on too long and I feel like they didn't do a great job with the flow of the show and connecting with the crowd. It was still awesome seeing Usher for the first time. He sounded great and some of those songs were just too much fun. Yeah, Confessions, and Caught Up are just too classic.
Not sure what that person was talking about all the rappers and so called guests? I missed the first 20 minutes of the show because I was at Sturgill, but the only rapper that I saw perform was Black Thought (who was a fucking welcome breath of fresh air after walking by Russ and Kaiydo barely rapping their lines over backing track vocal recordings) and I don't remember there being any other guests.
Anderson Paak was incredible. It feels like he's blowing up, I couldn't believe how many people even among that garbage crowd knew his music so well. That was definitely my favorite crowd of the weekend.
Favorite sets: 1) Solange 2) Paak 3) Badbadnotgood 4) Vulfpeck 5) George Clinton
HM: Jacob Collier, Usher + The Roots, Blind Boys of Alabama
The crowd this festival attracts is pretty shitty, but the ability to get great spots for all the non EDM shows without waiting too long is really terrific. Plus, the people at those shows are obviously way better than the general population. The venue is just unbeatable, and coming from Miami they'd really have to shit the bed on future lineups for me not to make the 2.5 hour drive for a camping festival at such a gorgeous place. See you guys in 2018!

Also did anyone else here go to Waka Flocka and experience that pandering fuckboi nonsense?
It basically turned into a cheesy DJ set with him just building up drops and doing the "ONE TWO THREE GO!" countdown every time. I wasn't expecting anything great, I just wanted some ignorant hip hop, but good God at least perform your actual music.
Yessssss, the Wacka Flacka show was silly. But the only great thing about that, was seeing him after at the BADBADNOTGOOD show. I was on the rail, and he was in the press area rocking out.
And I wasn't at the show, it's just what I heard from friends. I'm glad it wasn't too bad tho! I wanted to see that show, but I had to watch OTT. Great decision on my part.
Griz was actually a lot of fun, but I was one of the 200 people at Solange while Nectar was playing. Honestly, if this festival continues to book a handful of great acts to see over the weekend, i'll be there. Me and 200 people at the show.
Yea this is a thing. Which is why I rated the crowd so low. 2/10. So just out of curiosity, what would actually get you guys to this festival? Acts, etc.
It's pretty obvious that is Bassnectar Railfam headbanging to GRiZ showing off the new metal head syndrome in EDM. Is it bad? I don't think so. The original metal-heads didn't used to like punks slam dancing or moshing and often wanted to fight people back in the 80's over it if you bumped into them. Apparently some music festival attendees don't want people to get into shit they way they personally want to now. Saying that a bunch of wirey handbangers means a crowd is 2/10 is kind of pushing it a little bit Joey (all due respect of course). I know that you're not specifically targeting a few people at GRiZ, but Bass Heads are kind of the new dirty hippies to a lot of people and almost bringing about a kind of culture shock. I'm not trying to make a value judgment on them, because all the ones I've encountered have generally been nice and pretty knowledgeable about other acts and issues. Maybe it's simple to be all in on an EDM superstar and follow him around the country. But there were plenty of people hating on Deadheads back in the 70s ("Get a Job Hippie) or Phish in the 80's or 90's (same anti-hippie attack lines).
Honestly, I'd rather see 1,000 Bass Heads headbanging and rail-faming than be at a crowd of 21 Pilots fans. But that's just me.

the original rumored top line of Radiohead AF and Chance would have had me down there in a heartbeat
EDM railfam reminds me so much of "brometal" fans at Limp Bizkit (and Limp Bizkit wannabe bands) in the late 90s/early 00s
Yes, perfect comparison. The Bassfam or whatever they're called is awful. Every fest where I've been to that has Bassnectar they have almost ruined for me. Bisco in 15 was by far the worst, you couldn't even enjoy any acts on the main stage because the first 5 rows were people sitting down waiting for Bassnectar...7hrs before his set.
At Bonnaroo in 15 the people that couldn't make it into the pit at Which just jumped the rail into the VIP side of the pit when the stage lights went down. This girl got destroyed from behind by a group of 5-6 guys that jumped the rail and she had to be carried out by medical.
They give themselves a bad name. They tend to be meth-y, dirty, and generally obnoxious. Camping for an act is fine by me, but disrespecting earlier artists and their fans is too much.
I think Bisco 15 was kind of the exception. That story about the guy and his gf trying to get to the rail for an earlier show turned out to be kind of a b.s. interpretation, and I know they were all fighting each other on social media since Bassnectar is more of an inclusive type even if not all of his crowd is. The bass heads have their own issues, but I think a better Bro-Metal analogy would be some roided out d-bag at a Flosstradamus show with his shirt off and sunglasses on at night or whatever. I've been to probably 5 festivals with bass heads, most recently Euphoria 16, and we had no issues with them except getting tired of seeing their symbol. As I noted in that thread, I stood in front of rail fam in the VIP section and talked to plenty of them at main stage shows the day Bassnectar played. Maybe it wasn't a representative sample because we were at Euphoria which is skewed hippie, but no one sat facing away from the stage for Lettuce, and no one was being a dick at all. I think they were just jacked up for their hero.

Nah, that's only part of it. The crowd was a 2/10 because you had a bunch of trashy greek bros and sorority not knowing how to festival, dropping left and right in front of me at shows. People throwing up everywhere and knocking into people, being super inconsiderate. It's just a mix of really shitty people. I really hope the lineup next year starts to skew more away from the bass/rap crowds, but we will see. This place really is special and it has sooooooo much more going for it than bonnaroo does, but it'll never achieve what it deserves if they keep booking lineups like this. Minus the few gems in the lineup, of course.
