Not all Florida is bad, but most of it does suck. Also, I've been going to Bonnaroo long enough now where I know things don't get better, so I should probably not hold out that this fest will all of a sudden book a great lineup and get rid of all the shitty people attending this fest.
It's pretty obvious that is Bassnectar Railfam headbanging to GRiZ showing off the new metal head syndrome in EDM. Is it bad? I don't think so. The original metal-heads didn't used to like punks slam dancing or moshing and often wanted to fight people back in the 80's over it if you bumped into them. Apparently some music festival attendees don't want people to get into shit they way they personally want to now. Saying that a bunch of wirey handbangers means a crowd is 2/10 is kind of pushing it a little bit Joey (all due respect of course). I know that you're not specifically targeting a few people at GRiZ, but Bass Heads are kind of the new dirty hippies to a lot of people and almost bringing about a kind of culture shock. I'm not trying to make a value judgment on them, because all the ones I've encountered have generally been nice and pretty knowledgeable about other acts and issues. Maybe it's simple to be all in on an EDM superstar and follow him around the country. But there were plenty of people hating on Deadheads back in the 70s ("Get a Job Hippie) or Phish in the 80's or 90's (same anti-hippie attack lines).
Honestly, I'd rather see 1,000 Bass Heads headbanging and rail-faming than be at a crowd of 21 Pilots fans. But that's just me.
Nah, that's only part of it. The crowd was a 2/10 because you had a bunch of trashy greek bros and sorority not knowing how to festival, dropping left and right in front of me at shows. People throwing up everywhere and knocking into people, being super inconsiderate. It's just a mix of really shitty people. I really hope the lineup next year starts to skew more away from the bass/rap crowds, but we will see. This place really is special and it has sooooooo much more going for it than bonnaroo does, but it'll never achieve what it deserves if they keep booking lineups like this. Minus the few gems in the lineup, of course.
Reasonable enough. That shit gets annoying. There were a few stretcher runs at Buku this weekend, but luckily I didn't see anyone hurling in the crowds. They banned < 18 year olds a few years ago, and it's gotten much better since. But I hear you on that greek life. Someone once went to a festival in their city, and now they want to bring their frat or sorority out where not enough of them can handle their liquor yet and it ends up being arduous having to deal with 'em.
We're all a mess of paradoxes. Believing in things we know can't be true. We walk around carrying feelings too complicated and contradictory to express. But when it all becomes too big, and words aren't enough to help get it all out, there's always music.

I never really ran into these people, but it shocks me none that they were there. BTW did anyone see my giant pink flamingo in the lake? Or actually a group of people dragged it directly in front of the beach stage apparently from what I understand lol.

Yes! They took the float in front during CBDB from what I remember.

It would have been later than that, because I didn't blow it up and bring it to the beach until Saturday morning.
Okeechobee is everything Bonnaroo used to be, actually just overtook Bonnaroo as my favorite camping festival (and would be my favorite now if not for Groove Cruise). I have done most of them, no other festival has the uniqueness of the Okeechobee grounds. The Beach for chilling during the day (even when it was unseasonably cold this year it was glorious hanging there), plus the new fire stage (incendia) for Bass music all night. The jungle 51 area with a ridiculous lazer set up for dancing all night to techno (I don't much even like the minimal of techno, but they had an excellent lineup Friday and Saturday). The Grove area with the 3 more normal stages. And best of all yogachobee where all kinds of spiritual adventures can be held (4 other smaller stages and all kinds of outstanding artwork).
The lineup was outstanding other than the headliners, and I think that was just because their initial gets didn't pan out. I actually didn't realize how good the lineup was until I finally researched it a week beforehand, ended up with an awesome 20 hour playlist. And I think they did brilliant with the scheduling, great late night picks and good diverse choices flowing throughout each day. So many unexpected outstanding sets, I think Saturday was one of my all time favorite festival days ever. Revitalists (career defining gig there busting his head open and still finishing the set) to Rainbow Kitten Surprise to Floozies to Griz to Jacob Collier to Snails (never been impressed by Snails before Okeey) to Bassnectar to Sturgill to Porter Robinson Live to Yogachobee to DVS1 was so much fun. George Clinton was the only dud of the day, but still fun seeing him at 2 in the afternoon. Best Griz set I have ever seen by far (out of 10+ now). Jacob Collier is an insanely unique act, Quincy Jones discovered him and he had special software developed at MIT. Perpetual Groove rule at a festival. Pretty Lights Live band just doesn't compare to his DJ sets, moments of greatness but after seeing it twice now I am not impressed.
I don't get this hate on the crowd, no different than any other of today's festival crowds. The bassheads really are the new hippies. Just like the annoying wooks in the hippie crowd, there are annoying wooks in the basshead crowd. But overall it is a fantastic group of music lovers.
My only complaint is that the Now stage was way too low for a few sets. I didn't buy a single drink the entire weekend, non-stop tasty IPA's for me:-) Definitely another staple festival for me, returning next year regardless of lineup.
I feel like this type of music doesn't warrant that type of reaction. It just seems so unnatural because the music really isn't that heavy. It doesn't even seem fun or like they're genuinely reacting to the music that's being played. It's like they hear a beat drop and immediately think they're supposed to bang their heads.
