Has that Australian artist Pogo who makes all the beats from Disney movie samples ever played anything? Or is he just an internet famous person? He would be a fun set.
I'm not the most informed EDM guy. I just discovered Louis the Child today. Someone alleviate my concerns and tell me they aren't going to be what the chainsmokers were this year, except next year.

i doubt it. they're yet to put out an actual album and only have like 3 officially released singles. i like some of louis the childs music personally but their performance is very similar to the chainsmokers. lots of standing on top of the table.

I love Pogo! He did a U.S. tour several years ago, but got deported because either his manager or tour manager didn't check off all the legal steps. Don't think he's allowed back until 2021 or 2023.

awh shit really, that's a bummer to hear. I recently discovered his stuff and it's pretty cool.
I'm cool with Galantis btw. Would be an improvement over Chainsmokers, that's for damn sure.
Right. There's going to be some poppy cheese EDM either way. Hearing Peanut Butter Jelly and people just going nuts would be ok with me. They aren't going to take the spot of someone that otherwise would make the rest of us happy.
I think we get ONE out of left field really satisfying "EDM" act we like then a lot of middle of the road and 2016 style stuff.
I just think it's a stupid booking in terms of driving sales. They've probably been to every major city since that song dropped, and the fans of those kind of acts could care less which one you book. You could throw in one of Hardwell/Galantis/Kygo/Knife Party/Marshmello, and you're going to attract the exact same demographic. If you're a fan of one, you're more likely than not a fan of them all, so booking multiple isn't going to bring people out in droves considering that Roo isn't an EDM-focused festival.
If I ran a restaurant and offered half price on hot dogs, pasta and salads and I brought in 100 extra customers that sounds great. Except they only really needed the hot dogs to come in, and I just lost all of that money I could have been making on pasta and salads. Those customers are cool with me dropping the price, but I could've used the extra cash to add pizza to my menu and get 300 new customers who like pizza.
I think that they've lost the ability to see the bigger picture with avoiding the generic crap.

I'm cool with spaghetti. And your analogy makes no sense.
Roo doubling down on generic EDM acts is pointless because there's diminishing returns on booking more than one. You're never going to bring people out in droves a la EDC or Ultra, and the fan bases overlap so extensively that it's not like booking Hardwell is going to turn off Kygo fans, or vice versa. As long as you get one or two of those acts out, you've done your part for that crowd in terms of what Bonnaroo can draw compared to the local EDM fests.
When you start wasting money and book all of: RL Grime, Floss, Zeds, Adventure Club, Chainsmokers, you could have cut three or four of those acts and spent the money on two better grabs. You probably wouldn't lose any of the crowd that were interested in those first five, but would gain fans of the new two. RL Grime and Floss are the hot dogs, the other three are the pasta and salads. The people still would have come and spent the same amount of money if you only had the hot dogs.
The people who aren't interested in any genre but EDM aren't going to Bonnaroo. There are too many other festivals that are closer, probably cheaper, and don't require camping for four days. You're not gonna drag them out to Manchester, Tennessee regardless of which flavor of the year DJ you get. Especially if Sunday starts becoming Americana/folk day and those same people are left out to dry for their final festival day.

Coachella, Lollapalooza and many other festivals don't buy into your theory.

They're also located in major metropolitan areas...not the middle of nowhere, Tennessee. Lollapalooza has the entirety of the Chicago area to draw from, including people who don't have cars. Coachella is at the point where lineup quality doesn't even matter, they'll sell out both weekends in two days regardless. Not the same situation at all.

Some rather uninspired bookings last year and it seems to be the consensus that this year will follow that path. Rather unfortunate. Roo has the bankroll and the cache, why waste it? There is some really solid eletronic music out there, would be nice to see Roo hold the line on quality.
Justice would be nice, the new album is super disco but it grows on you. Massive Attack, great live, deep catalog. Leftfield, one of two bands would camp out for 4 days just to see Portishead, the other band I would camp out for 4 days just to see. Buriel, what a fucking get and some 3/5 done right spekta - the kids like grime these days Chase & status - sick live drum and bass. Doc Martin / Danny T, someone who is use to playing a marathon set, playing well well into the morning. If you have to do dick cheese electro house... just book someone huge and get it over with. Why book 5-6 b level guys in the genres du jour, book 2 solid A guys and call it a day. Leave spots open for other better music. I can't imagine the cocksmokers crowd is making the difference. Do people that love easy to digest music really invest 4 long hot ass days to see it?
