I just scrolled through Facebook immediately having read all this and I stumble upon this girl posting the after video to that show and going on a rant with the headline "Don't ever tell me. EDM. Isn't real music!!!" And I literally lol'd. Why don't people ever uses the examples of live electronic that are truly great to defend the genre? Instead they marvel about how two guys with drum pads added a college drum line for one show.
Two things that are being grossly overrated in this thread: ODESZA and Porter Robinson.
Yeah, is this live show he has been doing really that different his old stuff or are people just fawning over it because it's live? I saw him live back in 2013 (I think) and was not really a fan.

The funny thing is Rufus Du Sol opened for them which is really live but like 75% of the people there didn't know who they were.

Exactly, this is the problem I have with the people who are raving over ODESZA at Red Rocks. Besides, thinking ODESZA is gonna do this at every show would be like me expecting that ever Flaming Lips show will have a full orchestra as they play Soft Bulletin in its entirety... It's not gonna happen (though I wish it would.)

I never saw his old live show, but his Worlds show is great if you like his music. Good visuals and not just generic DJing.
It seems like some people here don't like his music so his live show may fall flat, but it also seems like some people here don't like any music.

There's a whole subset of mostly-boring semi-shitty EDM which people inexplicably hold up as being great and even more inexplicably, point to as being somehow above the typical offending acts. It's weird. It's like hating Kings of Leon but being totally psyched about the Struts or whoever.
Ehh, I think it's more that most of it is a shit ton better than what we got this year. I'm not a big EDM fan but based off what I've seen in person and online, I would be much happier having something similar what we got in 2015 (minus deadmau5) versus the pile of crap that was EDM 2016 (minus cashmere cat).

I'll say it: I genuinely like Odesza. I like their sound. That show looked like it was fun and the drums and violins seemed to add another layer. Saw them on New Years Eve with Justice and I thought it was a really good time then too.
A lot of the deep house flavor of the week stuff that people around here point to as being "great EDM," comes off like watching paint dry in a live setting to me.

It needs to be pointed out that there's plenty of EDM (and music in general) that's terrifically fun without being overly complex or deep. There's nothing wrong with this, it just doesn't need to be hyped up into something it's not. For what it's worth, Justice - which I love - falls into this category as well. And there's plenty of electronic music, particularly that which is often categorized as "IDM" (shudder) which I find to be nothing more than a series of unlistenable bleeps and bloops.
This is Oneohtrix Point Never to me. And a good portion of You're Dead by FlyLo as well actually. I need some damn melody to latch on to!
I really think our best realistic hope for a top EDM act is Flume. I could see Jack Ü at #4 and then Flume somewhere behind that in the top ten with Jack Ü taking Deadmau5's LN What slot and then Flume in either LN Which or Pre-Headlining Which if they give the. HL a lot starting time. I would most likely end up with something else I'd rather watch but those two really aren't bad, they just aren't original/unique bookings.
Just because Coachella was good with CH top three doesn't mean it couldn't have been better with someone else in that spot.
It's also more annoying if Bonnaroo books lame headliners since they're unopposed.
Eh. Having someone like Calvin at the top of the bill guarantees some sales and gives you more flexibility to do interesting stuff on the undercard. The top 3-4 EDM names at Bonnaroo are always gonna be (mostly) trash, so book the most popular trash possible, I say.

It's just easier to skip for something better if it's not headlining.

Even Coachella diehards can admit booking Calvin was a blatant cash-in. It's not like Coachella is in trying times (it's one of the few festivals in the world that consistently sells out), and if anything one could argue Harris' price tag could take away from booking the interesting acts that come with high price tags. It didn't help that Harris did barely anything to distinguish his set from his previous Lollapalooza set or myriad EDM fest or Vegas sets outside of bringing Rihanna on to lip synch and Big Sean to play his awful hit track.
But, on the same token, Bonnaroo could potentially use Calvin as a way to bring people to the farm, but given this year's undercard, it could be the Harris/Carnage/Galantis/Marshmello show.

I would hope with Calvin's price tag they same themselves the money and get another act. As much as I think JackU would be a year or two too late in booking I'd much rather have that. And I think they are actually teasing new music again pretty soon so it may not be the worst thing to book them after everyone else did.
I'm just glad we are all pretty set on we THINK they are smart enough to stay the hell away from Guetta and Aoki

I'd argue the opposite. Booking acts like Calvin Harris keeps them relevant to a wider audience and ensures the next year's sell out, thus allowing them to book more interesting undercard acts.
You don't have to cash in on one of the most generic bookings, though. I could see your argument if they had booked Adele, Beyonce, etc. but Harris was a huge misfire. In 2013 they had some of the most out-there headliners ever and the festival still sold out.

How was the most attended set of the weekend a "misfire" exactly?
