You don't have to cash in on one of the most generic bookings, though. I could see your argument if they had booked Adele, Beyonce, etc. but Harris was a huge misfire. In 2013 they had some of the most out-there headliners ever and the festival still sold out.
How was the most attended set of the weekend a "misfire" exactly?
A misfire in terms of following the Coachella tradition of booking primarily interesting and/or rare headliners. Transformers films are some of the highest-grossing movies of all-time, but you don't see people lauding their achievements.

Calvin Harris just wasn't up to performing in the Sunday night Drake spot I guess...

It's not just about the closing headliner slot, but about the caliber of headliners in general. If we're talking Sunday closers, there's Arcade Fire, Dr. Dre & Snoop Dogg, Kanye West, Gorillaz, The Cure, RATM, NIN and other sets...

In the last 4 years it's been RHCP (after having played every other fest the year before), Arcade Fire, Drake, Calvin Harris.
That's 3/4 big draw Sunday acts that the message board universe hates.

Not to mention, that statement implies that Adele or Beyonce or whoever was available. Harris was an easily available, hugely popular act. I doubt he cost anywhere close to as much as the other two headliners did.
And your point about 2013 isn't necessarily valid. Demand for tickets in 2013 was huge coming off of a massive 2012 (with the whole ZOMG TUPAC HOLOGRAM nonsense). But the secondary market was way soft that year, and the following year they really ratcheted up the big name pop/EDM acts. I'm sure they recognized that 2013's more adventurous lineup (semi-annual plug for Coachella's 2013 lineup being the best ever for a large multigenre U.S. festival) wasn't as much of a draw, and made adjustments.
Harris is a million dollar plus act, and we're talking about a festival that's willing to throw down mega dollars for rare reunions and one-offs.
Despite the second market, the event still sold out. Plus, 2014 at least got Outkast, Arcade Fire and Muse to headline, all acts leagues ahead of the Harris "I make a mil for pressing a play button" show.

RHCP was booked due to a drop-out (suspected to have been The Rolling Stones) and despite Drake's mediocre performance, he really hadn't played many U.S. festival dates before.
I think if they booked Calvin Harris he wouldn't necessarily have to be unopposed during his whole set, especially if they booked a strong 4 (or 3 if you're optimistic). Granted they may not give you the best options since this is Bonnaroo we're talking about, but LCD didn't play opposed, and I'm pretty sure Mumford and Sons weren't completely unopposed either thinking of recent headliners. Maybe they'd give you something good starting early in one of the tents to pique your interest for late night.

The key word is primarily. For every Radiohead/Dr Dre, there's a Black Keys. For every Kanye West/Arcade Fire, there's a Kings of Leon. Jay-Z/Gorillaz? Muse. Prince/Roger Waters? Jack fucking Johnson. Nobody is "lauding" these bookings, it's just the way it is.
Again, there was still some allure to Black Keys, KoL, Muse and even Jack Johnson headlining. As far as I know, before Coachella, those bands hadn't really headlined festivals yet. Harris headlined quite a few festivals before Coachella, and didn't do anything to differentiate his set from the hundreds of others he's played.
It was up for a few days, but I remember the presale still sold out.

That thing about RHCP is false. They were booked almost one year in advance.

Last year Coachella sold the majority of its tickets at presale. Then they announced a lineup with Calvin Harris on it, and he was the biggest draw, meaning those people who bought tickets blind were pleased with the booking. Perhaps even lauding it. Definitely not standing around complaining what a misfire it was.

I said it was a misfire based upon Coachella's precedent for booking interesting/rare headliners, not due to his set being underattended or anything.
If Coachella had booked Pearl Jam and Bonnaroo had booked Calvin Harris instead, I'd be curious if you guys would be bashing Bonnaroo all summer long.

Well, if Bonnaroo had booked Coachella's undercard I would have gone. So unlikely?
I definitely would be okay with Bonnaroo booking 2 headliners I love and one mass appeal artist that I don't care about that moves some tickets and lets them pad out the undercard and add more LNs and what not.

Bonnaroo tried booking acts like Ellie Goulding, Macklemore, Sam Hunt, etc. to bring people in and it largely failed. Coachella can have some radio-friendly acts and mix in a variety of awesome undercard acts and sell out year after year. So, why did Coachella have to appeal to the lowest common denominator?
I love odesza and have had a blast at their live shows - but if they keep playing the festival circuit for a 3rd year in a row without a new album I'll be irritated. especially if they're billed as high as they would be.
they've been playing the same exact show the last 2 years, and actually, it sounds exactly like their no sleep mix #2 on their soundcloud account. I love the integration of horns & drumlines, but a new goddamn setlist is desperately needed.

They're going back into the studio this fall, so I'd imagine they would start touring again autumn 2017.

Is it really such common knowledge that of all the big name EDM acts in the world CH is the worst?

This comes down to a matter of opinion, but I think he's one of the worst, yeah.
"Getting poked in the eye sure beats getting kicked in the nuts!"
And we're right back to where we started. The big names are all equally shitty, so book the most popular one you can and move some tickets. Glad we agree now.

I think Coachella is one of the few American festivals capable of really doing this, FWIW.

I don't want to be the Calvin Harris apologist, but the guy has some hits. Danceable beats, great hooks, makes you feel good. I saw him in 2012 and had a great time. If he was at Roo and I was at Roo I'd go to his set.
