1. Tent appropriate hip-hop 2. Stage appropriate hip-hop 3. One or two rare/unique tent/stage acts 4. One or two "classic" tent/stage acts 5. One or two "interesting" electronic/DJ acts in tents 6. A smattering of basic EDM sprinkled throughout various time slots 7. That newish rock band with the potential to save the genre opening a stage 8. Galactic 9. One "punk" band 10. One metal band 11. Handful of shitty indie type bands 12. and fill the rest with whatever bands are touring
It's the bonnaroo 2012-2015 undercard formula. It works fine. I'm not expecting the moon I don't think, just do the above, throw in 2 headliners I care to see, and I'll spend January through May complaining and nitpicking but come June I'll be there.
Girl Talk, Rodrigo y Gabriela, Big Freedia, and Umphs are due.
Ill put my chips on Big Gigantic at the moment (new album) being on next years lineup.
Warren Haynes, Stringcheese, and Primus are long overdue.
Your post made me think of 2012, so just pulling from there, a few other potential 2017 acts that haven't played roo since 2012 (someone correct me if I'm wrong):
The Roots Puscifer Tune-Yards Little Dragon St. Vincent Dawes - wrong, played recently Danny Brown - wrong, played recently The Infamous Stringdusters

I'd like to see a Ryan Adams/ infamous stringdusters collab set
He has a new album though, and usually when I'm talking to anyone about Bonnaroo, Danny Brown comes up as a very memorable show. I'd definitly be happy to have him back with a later set time.
What are people's thoughts on Crystal Castle's new album? I've only listened to some of it, but I like what I've heard. I think they'd be a cool late night for next year.

I went with your undercard formula and here's what I came up with...
1 Joey Badass, Schoolboy Q, Anderson .Paak, Danny Brown (Schoolboy is in a tent because it should be rowdy and intense) 2 Chance the Rapper, De La Soul 3 Justice, Avalanches 4 Duran Duran, Pixies 5 Gaslamp Killer, James Blake, Crystal Castles 6 Big Gigantic, Flume, Hudson Mohawke 7 ?? 8 Galactic 9 The Front Bottoms, Brand New, Car Seat Headrest (I put three there because we had three punk bands this year) 10 Deftones, Deafheaven (I put two because we've had multiple metal bands in the past) 11 The Lumineers, Glass Animals (I don't really consider these "shitty") 12 Frank Ocean (hopefully?), Beck, Ryan Adams
This is way too optimistic, but this would be my dream lineup for next year.
When was Galactic last even booked fer 'Roo? I know it's been quite some time, but I'm not opposed to their return. I still kick myself fer missin' them and Chali2na in 2008!

I don't even remember, but it's been a while. Would love to have them back at Roo.

Really digging the new glass animals album. I know they played 2015 but it would still be awesome.
Was coming in here to specifically mention this. I've listened to it a few times now and it's grown on me extremely quick. I think they would get a really solid lineup if they came back. They are touring cities this fall. Got tickets here in Columbus in October. They had one of the biggest tent turnouts in 2015 I thought.

I'm highly considering going to that show too. I've heard nothing but good things about them live.
I would just consider indie rock. Their sound reminds me of the pixies and modest mouse.
Maybe Post Punk? They fit into my playlists next to bands like Wavves and Cloud Nothings so that's why I threw them in that category. Also yeah I consider Pixies an offshoot of Punk music.

OH yeah when I saw them at Roo that year I was pretty far back, it was great but nothing will come close to them at the LC when there isn't a bad spot. Although it blows my mind the amount of fee's ticketmaster tacks on purchases. Even after that whole refund nonsense!

How often does it happen where an undercard act plays back to back years? I know X Ambassadors did it '15 and '16 after they graduated from the Miller Lite stage but is that really a common thing or nah?

I feel like there's never more than one or two artists, more likely none. Kendrick did it in '12 and '13. That's the most high profile example I can think of post-2008
In terms of rap, there HAS to be one of the following there next year: Travis Scott, A$AP Rocky, Young Thug, Rae Sremmurd. I'd be floored if one didn't make it on the lineup. If they don't, it also probably means someone a lot crappier took that spot.
I'm usually pretty up with trying to forecast who they might book, but given the absurd nature of last year's undercard, it feels a bit insulting to shoot as low as I think I'd have to to be accurate. Don't even wanna think about how horrid the electronic music selection has the potential to be.

Not often, but I would expect Arkells to be back. They seem to be getting bigger.
So after mentioning that festival season (Coachella in particular) is playing a role in when their album is released, should we start mentioning The Shins more?
They played in 2012, and James Mercer came back in 2014 with Broken Bells, so there is a history there, for what it's worth. (Not even a huge fan of either group, but found myself at both shows. I liked The Shins better by far.)
Unless Shaky Knees steals them....I'll be shocked if The Shins don't play. Last time around they hit all of the big 3.
We've had a sexy late night R&b artist each of the past 4-5 years (R. Kelly, Frank Ocean, D'Angelo, Miguel). Who do you think would fill that slot ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) this year? My money would be on fka twigs. Puts on a really cool show and has had a great deal of critical acclaim and is expected to release LP2 within the next year. She's also yet to perform at roo and would even be billed in the same 10-15 range as Ocean, D'Angelo, and Miguel.
I'm going for Maxwell here. This could be one of those "Oh sh*t moments, because he doesn't tour often."
Side note: I'm probably one of the few who doesn't care at all for FKA.

He would be billed a bit lower, but does Anderson .Paak qualify?
He will be billed at least in the top 3-4 lines. I could see him getting the Janelle Monae spot from 2014. But I'm hoping for a LN tent set.
