Unless they put out a 3rd hit album before June, I still don't see Twenty One Pilots as a headliner.
I know they are close to selling out arenas, but Brand New/Modest Mouse and Halsey shows both nearly sold out MSG and that doesn't mean they're headliners.
Only way 21P could be a headliner if they go with the Vampire Weekend/Foster the People format again, but I think those days are done and they're set with EDM being the 4th billed headliner.
Brand New and Modest Mouse aren't being blasted on every top 40 station in the country.
Not saying I think 21p should be a headliner, but if they are on the lineup, I can't see how they're not.
Top 40 has no bearing on who headlines. Did Ellie Goulding and Fetty Wap headline in 2015?

Twenty One Pilots may be awful, but their last album has already gone multi-platinum and spawned three platinum singles (two of which peaked in the top 5 on the Billboard 100). They currently have three singles in the top 40, and Blurryface is still floating around the top 10 on the Billboard 200 15 months after being released. Oh, and they're billed second at Music Midtown ahead of Beck and Deadmau5. At this point, they would probably be 4th at the lowest.
i dont understand the need to make 21P a headliner. its not gonna draw any more fans compared to billing them on the 2nd line. I know they have a big, cult-sh following but its a young demo and that demo isnt spending money inside the fest. I also question if they would be able to draw well outside of their own die hard fan base.

their die hard fan base is bigger than mumford or kings of leons entire fan base at the moment.

That's going too far. 21P are huge in the U.S., but Mumford and KOL have a much larger presence overseas.
twenty one pilots would be a crazy draw. they could easily headline FF or hangout, and are a 4 at most other fests.
i dont get the logic. its not like HO and FF have consistently had headliners like 21P. I dont think they should be headlining more established fests like these 2 but maybe some smaller, lower budget or 2 day smaller fests. Dont get me wrong they have earned a top like 6 billing lineups, you cant deny their success but i they dont have to headline.

i dont know, probably. but KOL and Mumford are pretty big on the east coast from what i have seen and would appeal more to casual or non fans compared to 21P. Like im a very casual Mumford fan but seeing them on a lineup wouldnt turn me away and i would be interested to see them but when seeing 21P on a card very well could, but thats just me.

Yea random footnote. I went to check the new album show from 21P at Merriweather back in June and it was BY FAR the largest crowd I have ever seen there in the upwards of 10 years I have seen shows there. Tickets were reselling for $200. It was ridiculous. Granted it was mostly 10-15 year olds, but there were plenty of folks of all ages. I saw old dudes decked out in 21P gear. Like 60+ years old. Whatever you want to say about them, but they have a huge following.
That said, I think they could be billed as the third headliner or the first act on the second line. I wouldn't be surprised either way.

This is all assuming they continue touring past what they currently have scheduled in 2017. Looking at setlist.fm, they have played over 100 shows a year since 2013.

i think its time to come out to you guys. ive been a pretty big fan of twenty one pilots for around 4 years now. ever since their self titled album dropped ive been a huge fan im not ashamed to say that ive seen them 8 times. that being said, 6 out of the 8 times i saw them were in really small intimate venues, and man do they put on a show. they really are great performers and are wildly talented imo. the past 2 times have been post-blurryface, and the venue/crowd size really takes away from the show if you ask me, and that crowd has changed drastically from low 20 college kids to sophmores in high school pretty quick. that being said, i dont want them to be booked for FF next year, mostly due to the fact that ive seen them plenty of times but also to the fact that the crowd they attract is pretty annoying and i think firefly can do better. please dont hate me too much.

I'm a fan too. I think I have seen them 5 times. It is what it is. We all have our guilty pleasures I guess? Their young crowd is annoying as **** though. I saw kids crying at the end of the show last time. Like... crying because the show was over.

There is no banning for bad taste in music? Where's the "Nickelback Tour 2016" topic then? You guys have definitely ordered a code red before don't lie

I like Twenty One Pilots too. Vessel is great and their live show has fantastic energy.
Say what you want about Firefly's headliners, they may sometimes be tired and uninspired, but they never reach to make a newish band a headliner thats never been.
KoL, Mumford, Florence, Killers, Sir Paul. Those are the headliners since this became an 80,000 person massive festival. All those acts have headlined the bonnaroos and Lolla's before.
There is no precedent for Firefly to crown Twenty One Pilots with headliner status. Which is why i find it odd so many people are like "Yepp 21P headliner that is suchhh a Firefly thing to do".
