I don't really understand the skepticism about Firefly headliners. There's nothing to base these assumptions off of. Firefly history has never really shown any of this, especially regarding some things im reading:
1. Middling Hip Hop ex. Drake/The Weeknd - Firefly has never had an R&B/hip hop headliner except for Outkast which was a special circumstance.
2. EDM Headliner like Calvin Harris or Skrillex - Firefly has never had an EDM headliner
3. Making a second tier act a headliner like Twenty One Pilots - The only time Firefly has done this is 2013 (it was a festival half the size then) when they split Sunday headliners as Vampire Weekend/Foster the People (which looks pretty good now). Besides that - every headliner was absolutely a legit Top 3 headliner (except Jack Johnson, who also headlined Bonnaroo at around the same time though)
deadmau5 is edm and headlined this year.
DeadMau5 was billed 4th. Calling him a headliner was a marketing tactic. Headliners are unopposed at Firefly, DeadMau5 has 2/3 other acts going during his act.

He was the last act to play the main stage Saturday night. He was a co-headliner at the very least. Also, Jack Johnson was the Sunday headliner in 2014, but his set was not unopposed.

Not exactly as nowhereman has already pointed out. I personally think they might do a co-headliners again this year. Pretty lights would fit in the deadmau5 spot.

Pretty Lights isn't big enough for a co-headlining spot like deadmau5. He was on that trajectory several years ago, but he's fallen off quite a bit in the last year or so. I could see Skrillex or Calvin Harris in that spot.
Totally agree that it would be underwhelming, but it would be such a Firefly thing to do.

Agree that they've done well at avoiding the crappy hip hop and EDM headliners, and I sincerely hope they continue that way. I don't think they'd hesitate to book a Kanye or Kendrick in the top 2 given the opportunity though.
What I meant by "such a Firefly thing to do" is the questionable 3rd/4th headliner. Of course what makes a questionable headliner is subjective, but I consider Kings of Leon (twice), Jack Johnson, Vampy Weeks/Foster The People to be weak number 3's. At least at the time they were booked. I think Twenty One Pilots fits pretty well into that pattern, and we know they don't hesitate to book return acts, especially if their popularity has exploded like 21Ps have.

Very true. I was just trying to think of someone who already has a firefly connection. I wouldn't mind having skrillix in the deadmau5 spot, especially if they have a quality co headliner.

Kings of Leon may be an uninspiring choice for a headliner in 2016, but they're not really a "borderline" headliner. They've been headlining big fests since 2010. Not sure what exactly happened in 2013, but I have a feeling the 3rd headliner fell through. I don't think Vampire Weekend/Foster the People as co-headliners was the original intent.
I gave Drake, Macklemore, Will.i.am, Sam Smith and Krewella all 10s
Lmao, was Will.i.am really an option? I was actually given a decent list to choose from (Vampire Weekend, Arcade Fire, Fleetwood Mac, Adele, The Strokes, Run the Jewels, Violent Femmes, Pusha T, Pixies, Fatboy Slim, The Decemberists, Chance, Haim, Beck, Justice, and Franz Ferdinand were all options).
iirc they had daft punk on this last year so don't look into it too much
Oh, for sure. They clearly don't put that much thought into this. Florence was an option, and she just headlined this year. They also had Depeche Mode listed under mid-to-high-level acts (same thing for Elton John last year).

I got Phish, Imagine Dragons, Kings of Leon, Madonna, Lana Del Rey, Billy Joel, Aerosmith, Elton John, Mackelmore and Ryan Lewis, and Rage Against the Machine as headliner options.

I just wrote Pearl Jam in 10 times and called it a day. It has to happen next year. If this festival is going to constantly deliver Bonnaroo's sloppy seconds then at least give us the good one next year.
