Who do you think has what it takes to be a future headliner. Both on the brink, but I really mean those that are rookie status near the bottom half of line ups or who haven't even showed up yet. I think it is always interesting to see who climbs the ranks year after year. For some examples, I threw three years of ACL together next to each other. Obvious example this year is LCD Soundsystem: 7th line in 07, 3rd line in 10, and Festival HLer whore in 15.
Other notables: Cage the Elephant on the bottom half in 2010, 3rd liner in 15. Two Door also bottom hald, now a 4th liner Pete Yorn, relatively the same place 8 years later MIA hanging at line 8, then pre headlining I assume in 2010. 2007 has headliners all over the 2nd line.
I'll throw my bet to Anderson.Paak in a few years gets pretty damn close. Foals is already HL in Europe and was 4th at Glastonbury I assume we shouldn't rule out EDM so perhaps Kygo continues move up. Nathaniel Ratlieff? I also like Courtney Barnett.
What about something even further down like Break Science, Chairlift, Lizzo?
This isn't limited to just the big 4 or 5.
Another good example is Mumford & Sons playing behind a pizza joint in 2009, I assume no one in that video figured they'd be playing before 10s of thousands of people in a few years.

If HAIM's new album is as successful as their debut, I could see them headlining on their next album cycle. I think Alabama Shakes will be knocking on the door next time around as well.
Others:
Chance Leon Bridges (already on the top 6 lines after one album)
I think Tame is locked in to be a top 3 on their next album cycle. Arctic Monkeys as well. Also, as much as I don't want to say this, 21 pilots will probably be a top 3 within 2-3 albums.

Based on the developments of the past five years, bands at the beginning of their new album cycles tend to be picked based on past successes and future expectations. Case in point: Phoenix headlining Coachella in 2013, who then didn't quite live up to expectations and is thus unlikely to headline big fests again in the future.
Also, I'm going to discount obvious industry plants such as Bryson Tiller and Halsey, since there's no guaranty whatsoever that their fickle fanbase (as well as their respective labels) will continue supporting them in the future. You could arguably place The 1975 in this same category, but they have enough cross-over potential to attract more mature audiences in the future.
So, I'd say the following is very likely:
Vampire Weekend The xx Frank Ocean Tame Impala Arctic Monkeys (already there in most of the world) Chance Alt-J (only if they get over their hipster-bro image) Twenty One Pilots Lorde (industry plant as well, but could do it with/after a strong second album)
I think Tame is locked in to be a top 3 on their next album cycle. Arctic Monkeys as well. Also, as much as I don't want to say this, 21 pilots will probably be a top 3 within 2-3 albums.
21 Pilots is a top 3 NOW, they just have chosen not to do festivals for their own tour. They have two sold out MSG dates here.
Not Going to headline: Cage The Elephant, Walk The Moon, The Lumineers, Chvrches, Chainsmokers, G-Eazy, Foals
Might headline: Bon Iver, Arctic Monkeys, Vampire Weekend, Alabama Shakes, 21 Pilots, Frank Ocean, Disclosure, The XX, Chance
The Lumineers' new album actually topped the charts, but it feels like they've lost all the momentum/buzz from their debut. I think they (along) with Walk the Moon will headline a bunch of smaller festivals in the coming years, but I don't think we're going to see them topping the bill at the larger festivals.

Cage ain't gonna headline (look at the chart performance of their last two albums), and The Chainsmokers are flash in the pan that will (hopefully) recede into oblivion after the EDM craze dissipates.

RIP In Peace. Not looking forward to when I see them at the top of a Roo lineup.
Another one I thought of that is relatively low on lineups now is Borns. Again wasn't feeling it, but his show was packed, crowd seemed to love it. Has some catchy tunes. Especially if he keeps getting songs in car commercials I could see it.
Did they play MSG?
Do they have songs in car commercials??? These should be our two criteria for future headliners.
We'll find out more after their new album drops but glass animals are going to rise quickly. Their show at roo was still probably the most densely packed one I've ever been too. I think they could have a similar trajectory as alt j.

I like that pick. Very diverse, creative sound, and broad ranging, almost cultish fan base. I think it'll take 2 albums/5 years to get them to HL.
I'll throw a way down the bottom for now band, but Hinds could follow the path of Haim, alliteration unintended, of rockin female group, especially with international success. I didn't realize at South by Southwest they played 16 concerts in just 4 days.
I'm not sure there's anything Vampy Weeks can do to get over the top, to be perfectly honest. Tame Impala may have trouble too. They're both great bands with plenty of great music, but there's something a little too... anesthetic or detached about them live to me. Could be that neither lead singer has quite the cult of personality that it feels like a headliner needs. The kind of charisma that makes fans into fanatics.
I also don't fully understand HAIM's move upwards at this moment in time. They've had one album, but have essentially made two festival rounds on it. With a new album out in fall, I think they're probably pre-headline ready by 2017, but they may not hit Top 3/4 until the 2020s.
I think it seems likely that Chance continues his rise. He's charismatic and has a killer band and he's selling out venues 2+ times bigger this year than he did just last year. He's a year or two away from 10000 seat shows.
The Weeknd probably still has room to climb a little, which seems impossible, but I think he's already in the headline-capable tier.
Flume feels like a band that's well-positioned to make a big jump, too, though probably up to like, pre headliner.

I mean, it's not like Kings of Leon or The Strokes are known for being especially lively or charismatic performers. If an act is popular enough and festivals think he/she/they will move tickets, they'll receive an offer to headline.

American festivals - Foals. I don't know what it is that America doesn't get about them but they put on some of the best shows you'll ever seen. Its unfortunate they still have to play a supporting acts to bands like Cage the Elephant

Agree with all of this. Especially the lack of captivating charisma from the lead of both Tame and Vampy Weeks (lol loving that nickname, borrowing from now on) - though I certainly think the former has a good deal more than the latter.
Considering you've found the need to respond to my threads as if you are threatened by me I offer you some peace my confused counterpart. May you find peace in your restless soul.
A$AP Rocky or A$AP Mob in general in a couple years. An Odd Future reunion ft Tyler, Earl, Mellowhype, Domo, Syd as dj, Mike G, Taco & Jasper doing their Oldie verses, and Frank Ocean. These could definitely headline FYF, Riot Fest, or Sound on Sound.

Cage are significantly better live. I know I have my bias but as someone who has seen both and like both bands, Cage are the superior when it comes to energy and imo songwriting. I know inforoo really doesn't like Cage the Elephant but Melophobia is one of my favorite albums of all time
