I can totally see Haim headlining unless their new album is a bunch of experimental space jazz. When their next album comes out they're gonna be absolutely massive.
"You are witnesses at the new birth of Haim mk 2. Hope you enjoy our new direction."
I just don't get it with HAIM! They to me are at least 2 albums away from being mentioned as a headliner. Maybe for a smaller festival sooner. Let's use everyone's favorite Twenty One Pilots as an example. They have 2 albums in the last 3 years and currently hold 9 spots on 5 Billboard Charts. Haim has 1 album in 3 years and I know one the way. To me to be a headliner you have to have a discography and be able to have stage presence for at minimum an hour and 40 minutes. You have to have IMO 4-6 true hits to keep the masses engaged. True fans will be engaged almost regardless. You have to be able to interact with the crowd! All of these roll together to create a headliner. Last but not least name recognition and draw ability is what makes a headliner. Your name needs to drive ticket sales. The Roo argument this year was LCD and Dead &Co couldn't drive ticket sales. Mainly price increase and lackluster undercard kept sales low but you see what I'm saying. I don't feel that HAIM, The National, Chvrches, The XX, etc have all of these components combined. In time yes but not in the next 2 years IMO

Frankly, the definition of what a headliner is supposed to entail is arbitrary. Technically, it's just the name heading the top of a festival lineup. But I would agree that with a traditional major festival, each headliner is their respective calling card for the day, and that you want them to draw as many people as possible.
But the problem with keeping the masses engaged is that you get into the argument of whether an act should always play their greatest hits, or whether a show with album tracks and deep cuts is just as acceptable (because of art/culture). For example, Radiohead who eschew some of their big tracks during festival shows. Or Bruce Springsteen who will play various deep cuts/audience requests that not everybody will care for. In addition, certain show elements may keep people from being bored, but at that point a headlining set becomes all about spectacle rather than about the music (i.e., catering to the lowest common denominator).
Finally, the festival boom has lead to the necessity of creating headliners who may not have gotten the chance to headline 5-6 years ago. Both Lana Del Rey and Florence and the Machine have become headliners after only three albums. Of course, their headline sets are only 75-90 minutes rather than 1 hour and 40 minutes, but the audience doesn't care any less.

Forgot to add something.
Regardless of the business necessities to stay afloat nowadays: if a festival is going to claim to be all about the music, they need to put their money where their mouth is and be willing to take risks by promoting up-and-coming talent to headlining slots. The musical ecosystem doesn't benefit by having the same veteran acts headline every time they tour.
Getting close to 2nd or 3rd line anywhere Big G is about there, GRiZ is close, 18 or19 if he continues to put out quality shit like Say it Loud and any Three 6 reunion would be big next year. They were supposed to do it this summer according to Juicy J, but I haven't kept up since i saw him at Euphoria and then Gangsta Boo come out with RTJ at Coachella though she isn't involved in the reunion if it takes place.
Fwiw kind of crazy crowd reaction to Stormzy. He's a talented rapper that I wasn't really familiar with much of his shit. It's not the greatest but it's a party.
I'll tell you another act that never will be but should be is badbadnotgood. Nice to see musical shit in the mix. Jazzier, but I put them close to the talent level of Tauk and Kung Fu. This Roskilde set is great.
they wont be until they can put on a stellar festival performance. ive seen them 3 times, twice at a fest and once in concert, both fest shows have been very lackluster but the concert was awesome.
I guess that's fair. I've only seen them standalone and it was really great.

Foster the People is D.O.A. MGMT still has great nostalgic value, but the band members don't seem to have improved their live reputation.
Three Six Mafia... Goddamn no way in hell, but it'd be hilarious. Imagine the reaction to them playing misogynistic tracks like Slob on my Knob and Beatin Down These Hoes.

Here's another suggestion: Savages.
Assuming they don't sell out, they could make it with two more albums. The band is completely ferocious, can already handle main stages, and even got a daytime television slot this past year on the Ellen show.
One artist that I haven't seen mentioned that I think may eventually have a chance is Grouplove. They've at least reached their limit in the tents at roo and are now gonna have to play the main stages. Tame Impala, Vampire Weekend, and Bon Iver are the three I'm mainly routing for, with Bon Iver being nearly guaranteed after the next album. Arctic Monkeys and The Shins are both safe bets as well.
She's not relevant at all anymore, like even less so than Macklemore. Didn't she cancel her tour? She also hasn't released music in two years. Her public perception is also pretty bad. I don't think she'll be coming back in any big way.

Vampire Weekend may fall into the LCD Soundsystem slot if Rostam Batmanglij stays away for a while. It's been 3 years since "City" was released, and he left the band just 6 months ago. But, a reunion would give them some headliner juice.
Some of these other acts are interesting, but many don't have enough of a portfolio to fill a headliner slot on the bill.
Just saw twenty one pilots this week. Fun show. Great energy. I missed their shows at Bonnaroo, but I thought the smaller stage this week helped their performance. I have tried to translate that to a headliner slot, and I'm not sure it works.
Nobody is mentioning him, but Macklemore was a pre-headliner this time around. He and RL have a knack for making hits -- I could see a fest taking a flyer on putting them top line.
The Avett Bros WILL headline. Soon. True Sadness will blow up, imho. They will have radio time, and their shows are fantastic. It's time.
As much as I'd love to see The Avett Brothers headline, I really think they peaked with Emotionalism/I&L&Y. I don't think their last two albums have gained them many new fans, and I doubt the new one will either.
RTJ isn't going to be a headliner.
VW could at this point but I think interest in them has waned some since it's been so long since their last album. If they release their Rostam-less album and it's not that strong I think it could actually decrease their chances of headlining.
Bon Iver definitely has a shot.
Lorde is pre-HL worthy with only one album; the next one could definitely push her over the top.
I think Sia could just about headline; she puts on a great performance that I think translates well to large venues.
Frank Ocean could very well headline after his next album.
I don't think Tame Impala will headline a fest the size of Roo. Their music is great but Currents didn't live up to the standard set by Innerspeaker and Lonerism, and their live set can be pretty underwhelming.
Alt-J was approaching headliner status with how big they got after An Awesome Wave, but This Is All Yours shot a little bit of their buzz and also really dumped them into iHeartRadio territory. If they release an interesting new album they might have a chance, but I don't really see them becoming headliners anytime soon.
Has Florence gotten top-three billing at one of the big four yet? I think her and the Shakes probably have the best chance at moving up into that spot of the bands discussed so far.

While many tame impala fans will agree currents is the "worst" album (still really good) it definitely increased their popularity. Most of their "most played" songs on Spotify are on currents. If tame has 1 or 2 more albums that had the same impact as their first three they will definitely headline.
A band I think has a (relatively) decent shot is Young the Giant. My rock friends like them. My pop friends like them. My indie friends like them. They need the new album to do well and then probably one more but I've seen them live a couple of times and they've been great each time.

I feel like they have plateaued.Yeah people like them but they don't have any real edge over literally any other band with that sound. I think people have stopped caring about YTG almost completely outside of My Body and Cough Syrup (I think that's what it's called)

It's only been a little over three years, and I'm guessing the follow-up will release in 2017 or 2018. If it's as good as their last and it producers a hit single or two, they'll be there.
