Actually the level a headliner needs to have achieved to headline has weakend. I still think K.Dot is headliner worthy, but not yet on a Jay or Eminem level.

Was the use of "Weakend" a pun
Not intentionally. The Weeknd's headlining set at ACL was one of the most fun times I've had there. I'd rather see him in the 4 spot at Roo with a late night.
Anyways, here's my list: James Blake Leon Bridges Janelle Monáe Sylvan Esso Vince Staples The Districts Anderson .Paak maybe Lord Huron
This, this I would dig. I loved them when they came to Chicago.
It won't happen soon unless they unleash a hit album a-la the Black Keys, and they could just as easily plateau after another album or two. But I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they keep moving up lineups over the next 5-10 years

New Childish Gambino album is being released in September. The last album went gold. If this one does well I expect he'll headline or preheadline some fests next summer.

Based off the crowd at his Roo show in 2015, I'm inclined to agree.

It was packed as shit but I ended up being let down by that show.
As for Moon Taxi, I didn't look at those old thread links but I remember saying I thought they'd be big in a few years when I first saw them in 11 or 12. They are a draw now and mid or upper Mid card but I'm not sure how far up they will go.
Florence and J Cole are pretty much festival headliners at this point.
Tame Impala, Chance, Alt-J, Alabama Shakes, 21 Pilots are all pretty close.
I think down the road (2 albums away) you could RTJ, Father John Misty, Chris Stapleton, The 1975, Sturgill Simpson
Why Run the Jewels? I don't really see them evolving from just two dudes and a DJ on stage. I mean sure they have a large hardcore following, but I don't see them crossing over for a large audience of casual listeners. I just can't see them playing in front of like ten thousand people or more closing out a main stage. They have their sound and they do it well, I don't think they'll go through some crazy evolution on their next album.
They went from around #17 on the Saturday Coachella bill in 2015 to around #10 on the Saturday Coachella bill in 2016. They're #5 on the Sunday Panorama lineup, Foals is #6 on the Saturday lineup...yet nobody has a problem seeing them as a future headliner.
A lot will depend on the success of RTJ 3, but I don't see a problem with the cross over to a casual audience. They're co-headlining with Hot Chip at Beach Vibez (LCD Soundsystem winter festival), as they seem to appeal to listeners that are not big in hip-hop genre and those that are. I wouldn't be surprised if they don't ever get to that status, only a few acts in that genre are at headlining status.....and they're still at least two popular albums away. I do think it's a possibility though.

There is going to be a day in the near future where the Firefly headliners are, Twenty One Pilots - Cage the Elephant - Imagine Dragons. I will profusely vomit when this day comes.
My 2 cents 2-5 years Tame St Vincent Alabama Shakes Childish Gambino CHVRCHES The War on Drugs HAIM Hozier JANELLE MONAE (frankly it's disgusting she isn't already as big as Beyonce or Rihanna) Lorde QOTSA RTJ
5+ Catfish Christine and the Queens (anyone who's seen her live show understands) The Districts Gallant Halsey Lizzo Misterwives (if Paramore can do it they can too) Strand of Oaks The Struts Wolf Alice (definitely in the UK idk about here)
he/they '12 - Firefly '13 - Firefly, Made In America '14 - Firefly, Made In America '15 - Mountain Jam (Sunday), Firefly, Pitchfork, Made In America '16 - Boston Calling, Firefly, Osheaga, Made In America, Roots Picnic NYC '17 - Boston Calling, Gov Ball, Firefly (Sunday), Pitchfork, Day For Night '18 - Boston Calling, Mountain Jam, Osheaga '19 - Form, Firefly (Sunday) '22 - Boston Calling, Firefly '24 - Solid Sound, Soundside

Hadn't thought about Hozier but I think he's a shoe in assuming his follow up album(s) do well. He had like what 4 or 5 songs on his debut album that got pretty significant play? Chvrches is another that seems pretty likely down the road, although there are rumors that Lauren will eventually go solo (don't know how likely that is). The Struts are another interesting one. They seem pretty popular to the average listener, and have a favorable live show. Of course, they have been together six years and only put out one album which was 2014. So they need some material and at a better pace than one every 6 or 7 years.
Oh and Christine and the Queens were awesome at Gov Ball.

We're getting one, not both. I'd much prefer the Districts, mind, but I wouldn't be surprised if I end up backing the wrong horse.
TWOD are also a bit farther off than one might think, too. I'd put them at the longer end of that 2-5 year range.

St. Vincent could suffer the from being on the weirder side of mainstream alt music but I'd love for her to push past that so I'll support it. TWOD, as much as I love them, might just be a bit too boring on the surface to become a headliner. I agree on being confused why Janelle Monae isn't huge yet, but I guess two kind of offbeat concept albums aren't the most marketable things. QOTSA will have to get the bump next time they tour or else I doubt it'll happen. RTJ I'm not sure, I just don't see them ever having the mainstream appeal that other hip-hop headliners (Outkast, Jay, Em, etc) have.
I agree with most of the 5+ list being pretty possible other than Strand of Oaks who seems like he's been going a bit too long without picking up a ton of steam.

Janelle Monae is a perfect up-and-coming headliner, she just lacks the songwriters, producers and PR team that Beyoncé and Rihanna have always had. And if Monae gets those, there's no guarantee her new music would be worthwhile.
Arctic Monkeys are likely next in line to reach top 3 status at major US fests. Alabama Shakes arent far behind and I wouldnt be shocked to see them headline after one more album in 2018, kind of like how Florence was a tweener then made the full leap. I see it the same way for the Shakes potentially. Also could see acts like Foster The People, 21 Pilots, and Walk The Moon headline on some level with another hit album.
some mid to low card acts I could see making huge rises in the next few years would be The Struts, Moon Taxi, Anderson.Paak, Chance The Rapper (likely to be in the 2-4 line range next year), Pinegrove, Leon Bridges, Nathaniel Rateliff, Catfish and the Bottlmen, GoldLink, St. Lucia. Oh and cant forget the man in my avi, Lil dicky is sure to blow next year.
Also it is criminal that Janel Monae isnt bigger. She puts on a headline worthy performance every time she takes the stage.
RTJ's resting state is frothing at the mouth red-eyed neck veins popping anger. It is extremely rare for an act like that to achieve headlining status. In fact the only band I can think of that would is RATM. I might be forgetting an act, please correct me if I'm wrong.

also what happened with this? you would think he would want to continue to build his brand with Atlanta's success and release an album if he has one recorded.
