Do Chris Stapleton and Sturgill Simpson really have crossover potential? I get that they are different from most modern country gonorrhea, but it's not an automatic fit.

Grandma Sparrow could make the jump from club stage to HL, I think. Imagining a What field full of people dancing along to Pigsmilk Candycane is pretty funny

Not even joking that set was in my top 5 this year. I'll follow Grandma wherever he may lead.
I'm going to go deep with this one but, Kaleo. Least 5 years for that, several albums. He has one of the best vocals I've heard live.
I could actually see this one. Like you said it won't be anytime soon but I gave them a listen last year at Roo at the who stage while laying down off to the side and was blown away. Couldn't have been more than 15 people standing around the stage but the dude has some pipes. His range is incredible. Hopefully they'll finally get some real notice since they have a full album out.

At this point I'm becoming increasingly convinced he's just a urban legend or some prank Tyler's putting on, but if not Frank Ocean would definitely make it with another strong album or two
Vampire Weekend are headlining major fests on their next album cycle, doesn't really even matter if it's a great album or not. It will get enough attention for them to make the leap. Also from what I understood, Rostam's fingerprints will be all over the album. He just won't be playing with them and isn't an official member. And the idea that there would be LCD reunion-level hype for him coming back into the group is pretty funny. I would say the majority of VW fans only know Ezra and aren't aware of how important Rostam is to their sound.
Tame Impala will headline if their next album gets the same kind of reception as Currents did. As much as I take issue with the notion that Currents is their best album, it took them from a buzz band to the it band.
I imagine Fleet Foxes will get there if their return sticks. They'll be pretty high on lineups if they play fests next year, and I'd guess if they're playing in 2019/2020 they'll be on the top line. Definitely could be wrong on this one though. They don't have much mainstream popularity so it might be a little tough, but I'd love to see it happen.
I've considered the idea of both Father John Misty and Courtney Barnett getting to headliner level, but I think both are just a bit too niche. I also don't think either of their shows are quite right for that spot. At least not for Roo, can't speak for the other majors.
I thought the main idea of the thread was to discuss bands who aren't on the cusp of headlining, but it seems like that's pretty much all we've done. And most of the others have been bands that have pretty clearly peaked or plateaued (Young the Giant, Walk the Moon, The Lumineers, etc.)
Anyways, here's my list: James Blake Leon Bridges Janelle Monáe Sylvan Esso Vince Staples The Districts Anderson .Paak maybe Lord Huron
I can't imagine sylvan esso headlining any major festivals. It's just a guy on a computer and the girl. I enjoyed their show but there's no way I could see them headlining a whole festival.

Depends if they up their live production value and sound. I wouldn't have predicted Alabama Shakes would headline after their first album but look where we are now

Good point. Love their music and hopefully their live show evolves.
A lot of these are shockingly right. Mumford, LCD reunion, Phoenix, Bon Iver. But it also says Passion Pit will headline
None of those are really shocking, and when did Bon Iver headline?
Smaller fests like Eaux Claires which granted is JV's own fest. I believe if they put out a new album they could headline. They subbed Coachella 2012 which means they would headline at Lolla or other festivals
You really think so? I can't see any chain of events that leads to Kendrick Lamar being on the same level in five years that Jay-Z or Eminem are on right now.

Actually the level a headliner needs to have achieved to headline has weakend. I still think K.Dot is headliner worthy, but not yet on a Jay or Eminem level.

Florence and J Cole are pretty much festival headliners at this point.
Tame Impala, Chance, Alt-J, Alabama Shakes, 21 Pilots are all pretty close.
I think down the road (2 albums away) you could RTJ, Father John Misty, Chris Stapleton, The 1975, Sturgill Simpson
Why Run the Jewels? I don't really see them evolving from just two dudes and a DJ on stage. I mean sure they have a large hardcore following, but I don't see them crossing over for a large audience of casual listeners. I just can't see them playing in front of like ten thousand people or more closing out a main stage. They have their sound and they do it well, I don't think they'll go through some crazy evolution on their next album.
