I'm coming from a place where it's been about 5 degrees out the past several days. You all are a bunch of pussies.
Pussy and proud of it. I have thin blood. I don't mind visiting Chicago, Cleveland, Buffalo, etc. in the winter because I know it's only for a few days. Snow is pretty looking out of the window with a beer in hand. I don't need that every day unless I quit my job and went to work at a meat processing plant. Sometimes I wonder how Quebecers handle those -30/-40 days. I guess you just stare at a fire or something. 30 or 40 is already too damn cold. Take another 60 or 70 off of that...I'd rather be a pussy than stupid, but that's just coming from someone who prefers 100 degrees over 60. ----------------------------- Python can't possibly taste worth a shit. The time I had that rattlesnake stew, it was a greyish/porky looking meat with tons and tons and tons of sharp vertebrae bones (or whatever the fuck a snake has). From my understanding of Charcoal's Gourmet Burgers on Magazine Street here, some of those meats have to be mixed with some percentage of ground beef to hold together. I don't know if Sammy's does that or not. And also, I'm thinking the Python is probably sausage meat?

We are dropping the dogs off at my sisters after work today and hitting the road. The drive is only 7 hours but we decided to split it up, it's always a bummer spending a night in the house without the dogs. So we'll drive to Lafayette tonight and crash there, then drive to Houston from there Friday morning.

That's one of my favorite towns to eat in. You guys have dinner plans there or are you stopping on the way to Lafayette to eat? I'm sure you already know, because you are always doing shit, but Blue Dog is pretty good casual. Café Vermilionville isn't too bad. There is a strip mall Italian place called I Moneli's that's always money. I still need to go to Nash's and Poor Boy's Riverside Inn. Charley G's, when on, is as good as anything here. And there's always the shrimp 5 ways places like Prejean's and such.

Surprisingly, I have never driven west of New Orleans. Never been to Baton Rouge, never been to Lafayette, so I know nothing.
Thanks for the recommendations, but we'll be getting to Lafayette late, probably 11pm, so we'll eat on the road. In fact I have some leftover mexican I'll probably eat.

No problem. For a small city, Lafayette is a fantastic food town. I honestly don't know anything about Baton Rouge. For being an hour away, it's a mystery to me. I have had Mexican there a couple of times over the last few months when we had to go look at properties after the floods this summer. But otherwise we just never go there. They have casinos along the river, and I understand that they redid 3rd Street into sort of an urban renewal area with quality places. If you're staying at the Hilton on W. Pinhook, there is a French bakery called Poupart's right there which makes awesome pastries, breakfast, breads and the like. I used to always pick some up for my kids whenever I stayed there. Also, when you get off (presumably on the 190/Evangeline Thruway), all the signs are in English and French. So Rue de Louisiane' or Route Pinhook Ouest or whatever. That's just something different to look at.
The only cautions driving between here and there are:
1) Bonnet Carre' spillway between Kenner and Laplace is a 60mph. State Police are almost always on it and will ticket > 65. If the traffic flow is faster, you can get away with it. If you're sort of by yourself, I'd recommend you keep it 65 or under.
2) You have to cross the swamps between Baton Rouge and Lafayette which is part of the Atchafalaya Basin. There is about a 15-20 mile stretch of I-10 that is over water and also posted for 60mph. St. Martin Parish Cops are difficult and have been known to empty the contents of a car to find nothing and send you on your way. Trucks are 55mph over that, and it starts around Butte Larose and ends somewhere around Henderson/Breaux Bridge. Speaking of Breaux Bridge, if you happen to be staying on that side of town, there is a dynamite breakfast place there called Café Des Amis. They do Saturday morning Cajun Brunch but I think are open every day. It's solid, though as you can imagine, everything is topped with etouffe. Haha.

So what I'm reading is: I should cover head to toe with no skin exposed whatsoever bc 45 degrees is dangerously cold weather
(To be fair, I run warm. Chilly winds tend to make me Happy)
Haha. Probably not you since you are essentially a Yankee to us. But like @jakicker said, it's tough on those of us who live south of the 30th parallel and particularly those of us with a lake north of us that only freezes along the shore once every 25-30 years and always keeps us 10-15 degrees warmer than the rest of the Gulf South except for the people that live directly on the Gulf (which usually only gets to the upper 50s low 60s.)
It's just another winter day for a lot of people but I actually turn purple in the cold. So I packed like 5 hoodies and 3 long sleeve shirts for Sunday. Watch that windchill be down in the 20s or something. Brrrr. I'll be drinking whiskey if so.
I've been briefly researching the downtown parking situation, and think I've found a pretty good deal.
1111 San Jacinto is $5 after hours (for Fri night) and $5/day on weekends. And it's open 24 hours. Some of the others are waaaaay more expensive than that for overnight. I think it's about 4 blocks from the Club Quarters Hotel if you're staying there.

So, the Chicago Midway airport is fun. Really enjoying sitting on its carpeted floor while the airport peoples try and figure out where to put my flight....they had a gate, then they didn't, then oh wait maybe it is still this same gate.
